Maybe it's an American thing. You mean you don't have an Ethernet cable port upstairs or...? If you have a router you have an Ethernet port.

I have a router, but it's downstairs in our computer room. My PS3 is in my bedroom, which is upstairs, and there isn't an ethernet port anywhere upstairs.

Oh. But you're not the one with internet problems, right? Because I told Doog to use an Ethernet cable.

Have you tried using an Ethernet cable? That way the PS3 has no choice but to be connected :dopey:. Although sometimes mine likes to claim that the Ethernet cable isn't connected when there's quite clearly a bright blue cable connected to both ends.

oh and s1ck whip m8

Dat fountain doe.

I don't have to anywhere to connect the router and modem in my bedroom.

Well, you can get really big Ethernet cables, I mean, mine is about 30 meters long. Is your router on a different floor like @ildd's? If not then you should be able to just stretch the wire from one room to another (which is what I did until my parents were very kind and put the router in my room - but now I have about 25 meters of cable wrapped up at the back of my TV).

If it is, then... idk mang. I would say just buy a really long one and stretch it up the stairs, but living in a hot place I'd imagine you don't have carpet to hide it under.

It's in the office, which is about twenty feet away. I care too much about having a tidy house to even consider getting a huge cable, though. Mom wouldn't appreciate it, either. Dad didn't seem the least bit interested when I offered to pay to have a hook-up installed in my room. I have yet to go through the network settings on the Playstation (so it's had about 19 hours of downtime), so perhaps it'll be more agreeable after a long rest.

Long story short, the Bimmer needs a torque converter, maybe an entire transmission. Don't feel like telling the story and symptoms over again so let's just say it sounds bad. To say the least, I'm quite disappointed.

Decided to take the Lexus back to Tom's Thumb park because I felt like seeing some desert scenery. The drive was highlighted by less traffic than expected ('twas rush hour), though me and a line of similarly annoyed cars got stuck behind a gold CLK320 doing ten under the speed limit on a two lane road with no passing zones. It was an irksome couple of miles.

I forgot how quiet this area is. You can literally stand there and hear yourself breathe, and you can hear things from so far away.

As I drove up, this rental Camry was the only other car in the entire preserve. The silence was slightly interrupted when a white Optima came in and parked behind us.

Don't even bother going there kiddo..

It sucks, for sure.. But disappointed? It's hardly a surprise, you mentioned it was bad right around the start of the thread and you learned the 530 boxes were weak. Suck it up and get it changed.. :)

Sorry to hear that the transmission is finally biting the dust. What about doing a 6 speed swap? The weak transmission won't be an issue anymore after a swap.

I never thought of that, but I'm hesitant to do that because my experience with manuals is very limited (an AP2 S2000 for half an hour), so I can't tell what my preference is. If I end up not enjoying a stick in my mostly non-highway driving, I'm a little screwed there. But who knows, maybe a unique 6-Speed 530i that's been in one wreck could fetch decent change on Craigslist...

I would honestly consider your options since it seems you don't have a job (judging by the old Chick-Fil-A banner post). Can you afford to fix the transmission as it is? Do it. Do you have spare cash burning a hole? Then shoot for the 6-speed. It's not going to be cheap with labor fees on these cars.

I've been lurking Craigslist's job section with a little bit of success this week. Emailed a nearby shop looking for a helper/apprentice to show interest; last night they responded asking for a resume. Dad and I made one today and I got it back to them this afternoon. Hoping for a response tomorrow. My parents have every intention of paying for the work, though.

I would find out just what the issue is with the transmission first, then. I wouldn't go through the issue of finding a donor 6-speed & a shop who will do it unless it needs one altogether.

The torque converter definitely needs to be replaced, which is scary since it's the second one the car's had. The first one was replaced under a recall, apparently. That's what I know for now. Did some reading on E39 transmission swaps, and the consensus is that it's too labor-intensive (because electronics) to be worth it. Might as well buy something with a manual to begin with, which I'm open to. Parents probably wouldn't go for it, but that's understandable.

Edit: here's an M54-swapped E30. Interesting...

Sucks about the trans. I think they tend to be a weak point on E39s.(auto ones). You are right about the swap, liking it is the least of your problems since it's quite the job to do a manual swap. You'd come put waaay better if you sold it and bought a manual. Hope it all gets sorted out.

Yeah... I wasn't really serious about the 6 speed swap, though it would be interesting. I think if you know E39s in and out, have all the equipment, place and know-how, then it would be reasonable to do the swap, but anything short of that, it'll be a hassle. Paying a shop to do the swap would just be unreasonably pricey. If done by a shop, at that point, yeah you may as well sell the auto and buy a rare as hell manual E39 530i.

You're lucky that your parents will pay for the repair. Hopefully, it's just a torque converter and doesn't need a new transmission.

Let's be smart here guys, find a 6 speed that just happens to have an S54 attached to it... problem solved.

I think a S62 would fit better in it. ;)

I would not recommend a M54 swapped E30. E30s are fun and nimble, but if you're used to the creature comforts and comfort of the Lexus and E39, and that's important to you, it's hard to go back to E30 level of spartan.

Plus, you'll have to make sure that the swap was done well and that it's not just some ghetto job. And if you're looking for a swapped E30 at that price, you may as well spend $1k more and get a S50 or S52 swapped E30, both of which are starting to become dime a dozen.
