What happens to your driving when you zone out?

In another thread I brought up that I can occasionally go faster when I'm sort of drifting off into space and not paying full attention to what I am doing. Sometimes I all of a sudden snap back to reality and realize I've put down a new fast lap for the race. At the same time, Codename L brought up that he noticed himself going slower when it happens to him. I just want to know what the rest of you think about this topic.

I really notice it doing the 'ring licence test in the 190 Merc Evo. I'm not too good at the track, so a 10min clean lap is not that easy for me. My best times come when I vague out, perhaps using some herbal medicine to relax, and suddenly find myself on the final straight. It's at the 'ring where it's really noticeable; the fast, long corners and narrow road are strangely hypnotic, and I actually have problems when paying too much attention to it.

I know what you mean. It only seems to happen after you've been driving for a while, like at the 'ring, or during enduros.

Sometimes I zone out, then come back and think "what just happened? how am I still on the track?" Then I lose my concentration and crash.

I think I'm a little faster and smoother than normal when zoned out, but I can go even faster if I concentrate really hard and get "in the zone" (as opposed to "zoning out").

Jokes man, but it is open to misinterpretation!

As for me, zone out= in the zone for lap times!

One time, during a license test I was struggling to get gold on, I decided to start the test, and then ask myself the question "if a tree falls down, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" and then just ponder this question while doing the test.

Gold :sly:

Dang...there's no "varies" category. :indiff:

I mean, with me it varies. Sometimes I'll make a great lap or whatever when I'm zoning, and then once I realize what I've done, I'll start paying attention and mess up next lap. :ouch: On the other hand, there are times when I'll make a great lap while really concentrating.

So with me, it varies.

Usually it's the big fast tracks that I catch myself doing this in (Sarthe, Nurburgring, etc.), and whenever it does happen I go about the same. I usually find myself thinking about what I'm going to do after that lap/race, whether it be something GT4 related or not.

As you said, Blitz, I go slower, but barely. Only in Nürburgring (and probably in La Sarthe) the difference in times are noticeable (seconds instead of tenths).

I have to say I rarely go quicker when zoning out. I wont drive off the track when my mind is elsewhere, but I'll find myself braking earlier for corners and not taking an optimum line through a section. As a result, I'll stay on and not have any major off-road excursions, but I'll lose about a second a lap.

I find myself drifting off when I'm driving a race on GT4 late at night, and my mind will just wander away, sometimes my eyes will just droop, and I'll even fall asleep at the wheel....I mean, at the DS2! :scared:

I love zoning out! I usually get my fastest lap times when I'm in a racing trance where I don't have to 'try' to concentrate. Best avoided when driving down a motorway, or to work in the morning.

Just curious to know do people get this when they're using wheels?
Yes, but not if it is a tight and close race. Those turn into white knuckle, curses flying from my mouth moments.

But when I am in an endurance race with a substantial lead or am just doing hot laps I will go in the zone and turn out laps that are accurate and fast. When I think about it I manage to wind up off the track.

Sorry man, I hadn't thought about that.

This is basically what happens to me. Ill have a 30+ second lead, and ill just drift away listening to my music and suddenly snap back to it and wonder why I am suddenly way ahead of where I was.

It's exactly the same for me. I sometimes go faster, but I'm far more prone to crashing.

Hmph.

Never really happened to me, seeing how I can't do enduros yet. :ouch:
If it ever does, it better make me faster.

Oh, and BLITZ, I've seen your post about this on that one thread (forgot what thread).

With me there is a fine line between zoning and spacing out. In the current races I'm in GTPLMS season 4 and the Supercar Cup I will find myself doing things by rote. Nice lines, braking points etc. then only to space out for that sec and skid off the track. Nice thing though is that when this happens I now have enough exp. to correct and not slam into something and keep going.

I love just zoning out, it feels good and I get better times. I also like zoning in (concentrating really hard) on a tense race like the last race in the Pro hall ;)
and yes, I do zone out when 'm using the wheel as well, that makes me faster :D

What's that herbal medicine? Weed :dopey:?

I go much faster. Usually I'll be talking to my brother about something that has nothing to do with the game, and I get into a really good groove. I wish I could drive like that all the time.

I don't really go faster in that my lap times drop, but I become more consistent and don't make as many mistakes as I zone out.
