Hey, figured I'd say something... or a lot so...
Drifting itself
1. What do you think about drifting? stupid, fun, entertaining or what?
Fun because I like being able to send a given car sideways, entertaining becuase even as a kid I enjoyed seeing a car go one direction and the tires pointed the other and because it looks cool. It also gives an advanage as you'll realize just how your car behaves, thus you can apply it to your driving ability. It's argueable to no end if grip or drift is faster, common logic by most say grip is faster but there are those instances when drift could be effective or at least a semi-drift style or working just beyond the limits of 'regular grip' and right near 'drift' to get a better line and/or higher speed for a given course/ car etc.
In the end it's what you want but knowing how to drift can be a definite advantage in so many ways, and again... it's so friggin fun. The only game so far I haven't found it real fun is Need For Speed Underground... then again I haven't gone too indepth with it so maybe that's why... even Ridge Racer is a better drifter than that and it's arcade based too... RRV works off of lose IRL physics and they are probally more closer to reality than NSF U... I'd go down into specefics of the 6 main cars and the other duel cars but.... hmm... maybe not.
2. What got you into to the world of drifting?
Ridge Racer started it in maybe 1994-1995... knew it was possible IRL but always resorted to that... also went with GT but not on a real level... but Initial D really got me into it and also a bit of BMI. But Initial D I guess because it was also the first REAL car related thing besides Speed Racer (a little) that gave a real story behind all the technical stuff that GT is about a lot of the time. It feels like at times Gran Turismo with a story despite the fact only Japenese cars are used to race (and thats' besides the fact Shigeno intended it for Japan only...that's why I'm working on a fan-fiction with the mention of American and European cars in a good story...)... but otherwise Ridge Racer. Does anyone else know BTW about the new one coming for the PSP?... I think I'll end up making a fan-drawing despite the fact the game is not out here yet...
3. What kind control do you use?
DS2 or Driving wheel?
Both work well, I was able to first use Gabkick's old wheel and also got to use his DFP, if I ever get home I hope to use it again and maybe on GT since I really used it for rally sims and Live for speed. But I'm mostly DS2... just because it's me. If I had time with the DFP or any wheel... I would adapt within a day or so and be good... but I'm best with the DS2 because it's me, I like using it.
4. What kind drifting technique do you use?
Depends on the car, track, conditions, etc, I'm good with feint style but I'm also the kind to try braking and four wheel drifts, anything that I would want to try or to keep a drift going or to link drifts turn to turns. Whatever works for me and that car. But I like to feint... it's a habit ^^
5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?
Depends if I want to or not. Less something happened to my memory card, for unmoded cars... I have at least one Skyline GTR34 (black), Audi S4 (Dark blue), Corvette Z06 (Red), Altezza RS200 (Light blue), and one or two other cars either unmodified or untuned. I think also the C-Razo west S15 Silvia that I've tried that is also a bit of success to drift with.
I've tried also surely a lot of other cars, inlcuding the Lan evo IV, VI and VII, BMW 328, Honda NSX Type R and Type S Zero, S2000, Nissan 13, 14 and 15, an Impreza GDB, Elise, and Esprit.
For tuned cars, I have settings for a Mustang SVT Cobra R (with 400+bhp to boot), two Z06 Corvettes (one yellow with 390bhp, another black with similar output...), a MR2 SW20 (light red), A Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 (Red, either with a N/A or Turbo kit, 203/245bhp), and a Nissan S13 2000K (290bhp), also trying a 22B Subaru Impreza GC8 bone stock... oh yeah the Mistubishi 3000GT VR4 (although it's more for grip driving and for research on my Initial D story...and it's dark green...), Corvette Grand Sport, Camaro Z28, Corvette C5R and a RX-7 FD... I've probally messed with even more cars but that's all of them I can remember off the top of my head.
6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do oyu get your tuning settings?...Noticed the typo but nobody is perfect...
7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?Well... I figure this... based on what I've seen in Ridge Racer (don't start) and also watching Initial D, in addtion to my own conclusions from playing Cart World Serries, Rally Cross, and Nascar 98 to name 3... oh yeah Formula 1 (from Psygnosis...I think... sorry if I miss-spelled that and R.I.P. to that company_ and Formula 1 98 and 2000 to name a few, in addition to IRL racing and drifting and all else in between... I wanted to make a car to be setup to not lose traction easily... I.E. a car with a lot of grip.
Now I'm sure you'll say that's counter productive if you want to make a car to drift. I've tried Gabkicks's drift cars before... including a very nice FD in gold color (although he unfornattely lost it... along with that Mercedes CL600... and that GT40 Race car...
...) ... one day when I was still trying to get the full hang of drifting while he had already gotten the hang of things... we compared our drift settings... I had a Camaro Z28 with mods on suspension, transmission, etc... the weight was left stock and the power was raised to around 320. His FD had lightweight tuning and a number of other mods adding up to around 400+bhp. His car being lighter for starters spun easier but also his settings allowed the car to go into drifts much easier. But I also remember FD's are also good drift cars due to the position of the engine few other cars can match (Corvette, S2000etc...)... but I think his setup played part and it was very easy to drift with... but hard to race with.
On the other hand... he pointed out if I recall correclty (and if he's reading this feel free to correct me on it...)... that comparied to his car... my car was as stiff as a board. I could still drift it but it took more work. I felt that if I needed a drifting car... I would also have to a lose degree still make it race able. Maybe Initial D was part of it... but I wanted to be able to have my car stable and not ready to spin the second I turn it a little while pressing the gas... I had yet to fully understand other things like LSD etc... add the fact I could only play once every 6 weeks did no help either...
Although Summer last year... I had no obstructions and could almost do anything to my pace. Within a good month I was and still am very good with my technique but also my tuning. Delphc reason my say otherwise with those S13 settings, but would it be too late to note that I also had corvette settings that were probally closer to what you suggested. But some things I still wanted to keep because of the comfort level. Such as the LSD and braking... but it depends I guess...
I want to point out though that up to a point I learned better how to tune my cars and to make them a little tail happy... but still be stable enough to race at a good pace even on sims. I'm certain about some things but I want to continue to experiment a little with tweaking certain cars to be perfect to what I want on a given circumstance. Also, the Fan-fiction I'm working on based Initial D... since I want to make what happens in there as close to reality as possible (like the Manga/Anime) with my own twist... I want to figure out as much as I can. Hense why I try to make settings that are just as good for racing as they are drifting.
I do know that usually if you try to go for settings that have the car grip the road, it means it may be harder for it to drift, that can be a disatvanage on one end but an advantage on another. I find the irony of learning how to work a car either grip, drift or a fine line in between as I learn one approach from the other, espcially if it's off a drivetrain I'm very familar with... like FR. If I want to learn how to grip a car like an S14 or a Mustang... I sometimes may try to send the car sideways so I can understand it... but if I try to learn how to drift it... I try and go at a griping pace trying not to brake traction to understand the car. Sometimes I may play around drifting before I go for a fast lap...
and maybe it's either the fact I somehow suck at grip driving or maybe I've got a good speed drifting technique... perhaps a mix in between as in some corners I've found myself drifting or close to it going faster than I would ever do it grip, but it depends to an extent and what is called a proper drift or not. But on a few turns I've used on certain cars drifting to clear it faster than I ever could grip...
Again... it's probally my own lack of grip driving somehow or maybe I'm seeing this thru a different prespective... but on really though corners like the double apex.. I find myself being abel to clear it with better confidence and somehow going just as quickly if not faster or just a little slower than grip thru that turn with say... a Z06 Corvette bone stock... I'm sure it sounds crazy but that's just me or my style... maybe I just haven't been defeated enough times to wake up or something... I dunno...
I just find what I like... and hope it'll work. I'm a trail/error person... I seldom look at stragety guides and so forth... I try and find whatever when i can... for any game while were at it. It may seam counter productive to set a car to grip as opposed to slide easily but you need some way to stay on track... drifting may not always if ever be about speed but you still need speed to go thru corners... kinda hard to keep a drift going at less than 40mph if not outright impossible thru say, the double apex of Apricot hill... ya know?
8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?
It depends I guess. To what extent I want to car to be changed around. I mess around with the suspenion, transmission, LSD, Brake balance with certain ideas in mind with results thanks to years of experience... but some stuff I don't mess around with like weight and permenant engine changes. Some say to always reduce weight because 9/10 it's a hinderance... but I think always resorting to make the car lighter can also run the double edge of not being able to learn how to also deal with weight at times.
But it goes both ways... I've been able to get my Camaro Z28 with 380bhp and it's 3400-3500 frame to lap the track like I'm Takumi in the 86 but it's now starting to feel sluggish and I know why... I'm getting faster and I'm most used to sims... they seam to have ample grip even with over 400lb-fts of torque at less than 3000rpm on tap... but the car seams to only feel less and less responsive... I may and will (as this'll also go with my story...)... have to make it lighter... I don't want to because I can't undo the change... maybe I'll do it on another Camaro but I've really started to see how weight can be a problem.
But on another... maybe it's a times a good thing to have weight on. When you make a car lighter, it just changes the Power/weight ratio and then you may have to either resort to changing your settings and/or changing the tire set to a stronger one to handle the change... plus... the giant machine... even if it is starting to feel like a brick... still feels like a brick that has some change to be a little less agile than a fly but it depends... but I figure in the end it's what you want...
If you always try to make a car lighter, you may not be able to to learn how to work with heavier cars... or it may get to a point even 2000lb cars seam too heavy... but on another it's better to learn how to make your car lighter but also working with weight, learning how to deal with both is an advantage with no real loss in mind besides time.
and if I get the chance I may make the car lighter and see what happens... it was also part of what I had for my research.
I can't picture a time when I would not enjoy it less I lost the settings or forgot to save some and had to do it again (and again, and again) or mess with some settings I know will be a comproimse elsewhere. It occured to me a few months ago that I could use the camber angle (I leave that alone for the most part) to gain grip as I needed it for a Grand Sport to beat a time Gabkicks had on Apricot hill with a Mines Skyline GTR34... and I could only at best get within a second of it... i'll either have to increase power... work around with settings to make the car faster on that tack... or go to the last resort and then make it lighter... problem is I would have to change tires to handle power and the rule is to do it on sims. So that is sorta out of the quesiton save if I want to lower power (which I'm being a bit reluncant to do.).
9. What do you think about this "quiz"
Eh... it's something to keep me busy... and distract me from the midterms that are driving me crazy... that's just me though... but something intresting I guess. Good one I guess.
In response to JW... I dunno... midterms are either comming up or in the middle of ... least mine... so timming is probally a reason why a lot aren't answering or something else. I dunno besides also the school server here is really off...
That's it from me, till later.
