Drifting and tuning "quiz"

Okay, Hi everyone.
I have been thinking about tuning your car for drifting and drifting itself pretty much lately. So, i decided to make this "quiz" to gain information aobut other peoples drifting and tuning. Some might think that this sounds pretty stupid but as for my personality, i have allways been hungry for information all that :)

So, here we go:

Drifting itself

1. What do you think about drifting? stupid, fun, entertaining or what?

2. What got you into to the world of drifting?

3. What kind control do you use? DS2 or Driving wheel?

4. What kind drifting style do you use?

Tuning for Drift

5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?

6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do oyu get your tuning settings?

7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?

8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?

9. What do you think about this "quiz"

WEll, i think thats enough. Thaks to everyone who participates on this "quiz" :) oh, and please, take it seriously, thanks.

My answers to this "quiz":

Drifting itself

1. What do you think about drifting? stupid, fun, entertaining or what?

I think its fun and entertaining. I find drifting a very good way to get away form problems and let your mind take easy for a while.

2. What got you into to the world of drifting?

Hmmm... It was my bro who got me into it. I saw my brother drifting in GT3 and then took me to drive with him when he goed to drift to the streets. Also, Initial D got me intrested trying drifting too, that and my bro.

3. What kind control do you use? DS2 or Driving wheel?

DS2. I dont have a Driving wheel yet becouse of lack of money.

4. What kind drifting technique do you use?

Hmm... Not guite sure becouse i do not know much about different techniques but i have been told that i use braking technique alot.

Tuning for Drift

5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?

Yes, i do.

6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do oyu get your tuning settings?

7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?

Well, i start by getting the best setups for grip racing and then start/try to "tranform" them to "drifting settings"

8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?

I like to tune the cars. I find it VERY fun to try different setups. Its also very educational when you learn to tune your car, you also know what settings there is ;)

9. What do you think about this "quiz"

ps. sorry if there is typos, i do not have any grammar programs on my computer so i cannot check my typos..

Enjoy!!

9. What do you think about this "quiz"

1. Drifting in rl? entertaining to watch, fun to do if you're driving, scary as hell if you're the passenger
Drifting in GT3 - a challenge to get a good lap together, I find it is a great way to develop car control skills in the game. And, imo, its far more enjoyable than the simulation mode races. I gain more from it.

2. I got into drifting through a combination of watching rallying, some local autocross, and stumbling across this site. Initial D had nothing to do with it. It came later, for me.

3. DS2

4. I would call my style a high angle exhibition type drift, as I believe most people in here would.
My common methods of entry are feint motion, and braking, and a combination of those two.
I'll use power over techniques if the car permits it, but I tend to keep power levels low (relatively speaking), so I make less use of it, and usually reserve it strictly for tight hairpins with low-speed entry.
I tend to shy away from e-braking.
During a drift, I concentrate more on keeping the car balanced and the overall drift line smooth, moreso than smooth countersteering. Speed is secondary. However, with that said, if i can accomplish the above with smooth countersteering and at what i feel is a high rate of speed, then I'm even happier. But the DS2 makes it a little challenging.

5. yes

6. N/A

7. Generally, i begin with a decent grip setup, set the brake balance to F9-R19, TCS and ASM to 0, and put on sims. Then after attempting to drift that for 5-10 laps, I will go back to the settings garage and pull some grip out in what i deem to be the appropriate places, one adjustment at a time. For me, differential settings come after suspension settings.

8. I do enjoy tuning for drift or grip. It teaches me about the car and it's characteristics by observing how its performance changes with one alteration to its setup. By my experience, there is just as much (if not more) to be learned by playing with settings, as there is by actually taking the car out on the track and practicing technique. I think some of my passion for tuning comes from my stong interest and background in physics and mechanical engineering.

9. What do i think of this quiz? well, i did take the time to complete it... :sly:

WHAT???
forgive me for criticizing, but i think you're doing things a bit backwards. I've never come across an application where a car has benefitted from having stiffer front springs than rear - in terms of setting it up for drifting.
You typically would want softer springs up front - where the grip should be.
I mean that's fine if it works for you - i've seen your vids- but i find your method to be highly irregular.

...of course you do say you only start your tuning from there....

Heya guys, no this was not a typo imo. This is a paradox that has puzzled me for the last six months.

Anyways, most of our top drifters use stiffer front spring rates than in the rear ie: DR, Sheron, FI, etc. I've asked this question before but the only response i remember getting was that the stiffer front setting helps keep the front tires feeling planted mid-drift for a solid feel of countersteer.

This all contradicts my theory in tuning, and would really like to have this mystery explained if at all possible. My rationale is that the stiffer end of a car in general has less grip, but better responsiveness (won't go into the physics unless really necessary). Consequently, shouldn't having a stiff rear benefit the oversteer we so desire in drifting? Just some of my ramblings.

ah, i dont mind criticism, i actually love it! it lets me know where/what i need to improve on and what im doing good on. good or bad critisim is good to me. i like getting feedback on my drifting.
what do you mean you find my method to be highly irregular?

yes, i start my tuning there. the lighter the car, the less the springrates will be. my AE86SS is around 6/4 f/r respectivly.
when i have time ill have to try switching spring rates around and see how it feels. but i always have higher front then rear.

thank you for answering that for me.

What do you think about drifting? Stupid, fun, entertaining or what?

In real life and GT3 it’s very fun/entertaining. To watch and do. In real life, when I was driving my rx-7 around, it’s tempting to drift corners. I do drift in real life, when school or work and having a life is not taking over. It’s scary as hell. But when I do, I look for open parking lots, mostly when it’s either raining or the ground it wet. I try to save my tires as much as possible.

2. What got you into to the world of drifting?

Well first there was power sliding, and then there was the anime Initial D. That got me into it even more. Even then I didn’t know it was drifting. To me it was still sliding around. Then there was researching the web about this so called “Drifting” and I found a site talking about techniques. Then they defined drifting. After that I found out about GT3 and gtplanet.net and that really set it off.

3. What kind control do you use? DS2 or Driving wheel?

I use both DS2 and DFP.

4. What kind drifting style do you use?

Power over, Shift lock, opposite lock. Most of the time I use these.

Tuning for Drift

5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?

Yes I do. As my style of drifting is different for most people.

6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do you get your tuning settings?

If I don’t tune a car I look at the drift settings depo and edit there setting to fit my style.

7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?

Slap some sim tires on and tune the trany

8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?

First off it helps me under stand the car. As each car is different, it will respond in different ways.

9. What do you think about this "quiz"

Its alright.

Hey, figured I'd say something... or a lot so...

Drifting itself

1. What do you think about drifting? stupid, fun, entertaining or what?
Fun because I like being able to send a given car sideways, entertaining becuase even as a kid I enjoyed seeing a car go one direction and the tires pointed the other and because it looks cool. It also gives an advanage as you'll realize just how your car behaves, thus you can apply it to your driving ability. It's argueable to no end if grip or drift is faster, common logic by most say grip is faster but there are those instances when drift could be effective or at least a semi-drift style or working just beyond the limits of 'regular grip' and right near 'drift' to get a better line and/or higher speed for a given course/ car etc.
In the end it's what you want but knowing how to drift can be a definite advantage in so many ways, and again... it's so friggin fun. The only game so far I haven't found it real fun is Need For Speed Underground... then again I haven't gone too indepth with it so maybe that's why... even Ridge Racer is a better drifter than that and it's arcade based too... RRV works off of lose IRL physics and they are probally more closer to reality than NSF U... I'd go down into specefics of the 6 main cars and the other duel cars but.... hmm... maybe not.

2. What got you into to the world of drifting?

Ridge Racer started it in maybe 1994-1995... knew it was possible IRL but always resorted to that... also went with GT but not on a real level... but Initial D really got me into it and also a bit of BMI. But Initial D I guess because it was also the first REAL car related thing besides Speed Racer (a little) that gave a real story behind all the technical stuff that GT is about a lot of the time. It feels like at times Gran Turismo with a story despite the fact only Japenese cars are used to race (and thats' besides the fact Shigeno intended it for Japan only...that's why I'm working on a fan-fiction with the mention of American and European cars in a good story...)... but otherwise Ridge Racer. Does anyone else know BTW about the new one coming for the PSP?... I think I'll end up making a fan-drawing despite the fact the game is not out here yet...

3. What kind control do you use?

DS2 or Driving wheel?
Both work well, I was able to first use Gabkick's old wheel and also got to use his DFP, if I ever get home I hope to use it again and maybe on GT since I really used it for rally sims and Live for speed. But I'm mostly DS2... just because it's me. If I had time with the DFP or any wheel... I would adapt within a day or so and be good... but I'm best with the DS2 because it's me, I like using it.

4. What kind drifting technique do you use?

Depends on the car, track, conditions, etc, I'm good with feint style but I'm also the kind to try braking and four wheel drifts, anything that I would want to try or to keep a drift going or to link drifts turn to turns. Whatever works for me and that car. But I like to feint... it's a habit ^^
5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?

Depends if I want to or not. Less something happened to my memory card, for unmoded cars... I have at least one Skyline GTR34 (black), Audi S4 (Dark blue), Corvette Z06 (Red), Altezza RS200 (Light blue), and one or two other cars either unmodified or untuned. I think also the C-Razo west S15 Silvia that I've tried that is also a bit of success to drift with.
I've tried also surely a lot of other cars, inlcuding the Lan evo IV, VI and VII, BMW 328, Honda NSX Type R and Type S Zero, S2000, Nissan 13, 14 and 15, an Impreza GDB, Elise, and Esprit.

For tuned cars, I have settings for a Mustang SVT Cobra R (with 400+bhp to boot), two Z06 Corvettes (one yellow with 390bhp, another black with similar output...), a MR2 SW20 (light red), A Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86 (Red, either with a N/A or Turbo kit, 203/245bhp), and a Nissan S13 2000K (290bhp), also trying a 22B Subaru Impreza GC8 bone stock... oh yeah the Mistubishi 3000GT VR4 (although it's more for grip driving and for research on my Initial D story...and it's dark green...), Corvette Grand Sport, Camaro Z28, Corvette C5R and a RX-7 FD... I've probally messed with even more cars but that's all of them I can remember off the top of my head.

6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do oyu get your tuning settings?...Noticed the typo but nobody is perfect...

7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?Well... I figure this... based on what I've seen in Ridge Racer (don't start) and also watching Initial D, in addtion to my own conclusions from playing Cart World Serries, Rally Cross, and Nascar 98 to name 3... oh yeah Formula 1 (from Psygnosis...I think... sorry if I miss-spelled that and R.I.P. to that company_ and Formula 1 98 and 2000 to name a few, in addition to IRL racing and drifting and all else in between... I wanted to make a car to be setup to not lose traction easily... I.E. a car with a lot of grip.
Now I'm sure you'll say that's counter productive if you want to make a car to drift. I've tried Gabkicks's drift cars before... including a very nice FD in gold color (although he unfornattely lost it... along with that Mercedes CL600... and that GT40 Race car... :(...) ... one day when I was still trying to get the full hang of drifting while he had already gotten the hang of things... we compared our drift settings... I had a Camaro Z28 with mods on suspension, transmission, etc... the weight was left stock and the power was raised to around 320. His FD had lightweight tuning and a number of other mods adding up to around 400+bhp. His car being lighter for starters spun easier but also his settings allowed the car to go into drifts much easier. But I also remember FD's are also good drift cars due to the position of the engine few other cars can match (Corvette, S2000etc...)... but I think his setup played part and it was very easy to drift with... but hard to race with.
On the other hand... he pointed out if I recall correclty (and if he's reading this feel free to correct me on it...)... that comparied to his car... my car was as stiff as a board. I could still drift it but it took more work. I felt that if I needed a drifting car... I would also have to a lose degree still make it race able. Maybe Initial D was part of it... but I wanted to be able to have my car stable and not ready to spin the second I turn it a little while pressing the gas... I had yet to fully understand other things like LSD etc... add the fact I could only play once every 6 weeks did no help either...
Although Summer last year... I had no obstructions and could almost do anything to my pace. Within a good month I was and still am very good with my technique but also my tuning. Delphc reason my say otherwise with those S13 settings, but would it be too late to note that I also had corvette settings that were probally closer to what you suggested. But some things I still wanted to keep because of the comfort level. Such as the LSD and braking... but it depends I guess...
I want to point out though that up to a point I learned better how to tune my cars and to make them a little tail happy... but still be stable enough to race at a good pace even on sims. I'm certain about some things but I want to continue to experiment a little with tweaking certain cars to be perfect to what I want on a given circumstance. Also, the Fan-fiction I'm working on based Initial D... since I want to make what happens in there as close to reality as possible (like the Manga/Anime) with my own twist... I want to figure out as much as I can. Hense why I try to make settings that are just as good for racing as they are drifting.
I do know that usually if you try to go for settings that have the car grip the road, it means it may be harder for it to drift, that can be a disatvanage on one end but an advantage on another. I find the irony of learning how to work a car either grip, drift or a fine line in between as I learn one approach from the other, espcially if it's off a drivetrain I'm very familar with... like FR. If I want to learn how to grip a car like an S14 or a Mustang... I sometimes may try to send the car sideways so I can understand it... but if I try to learn how to drift it... I try and go at a griping pace trying not to brake traction to understand the car. Sometimes I may play around drifting before I go for a fast lap...
and maybe it's either the fact I somehow suck at grip driving or maybe I've got a good speed drifting technique... perhaps a mix in between as in some corners I've found myself drifting or close to it going faster than I would ever do it grip, but it depends to an extent and what is called a proper drift or not. But on a few turns I've used on certain cars drifting to clear it faster than I ever could grip...
Again... it's probally my own lack of grip driving somehow or maybe I'm seeing this thru a different prespective... but on really though corners like the double apex.. I find myself being abel to clear it with better confidence and somehow going just as quickly if not faster or just a little slower than grip thru that turn with say... a Z06 Corvette bone stock... I'm sure it sounds crazy but that's just me or my style... maybe I just haven't been defeated enough times to wake up or something... I dunno...
I just find what I like... and hope it'll work. I'm a trail/error person... I seldom look at stragety guides and so forth... I try and find whatever when i can... for any game while were at it. It may seam counter productive to set a car to grip as opposed to slide easily but you need some way to stay on track... drifting may not always if ever be about speed but you still need speed to go thru corners... kinda hard to keep a drift going at less than 40mph if not outright impossible thru say, the double apex of Apricot hill... ya know?
8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?

It depends I guess. To what extent I want to car to be changed around. I mess around with the suspenion, transmission, LSD, Brake balance with certain ideas in mind with results thanks to years of experience... but some stuff I don't mess around with like weight and permenant engine changes. Some say to always reduce weight because 9/10 it's a hinderance... but I think always resorting to make the car lighter can also run the double edge of not being able to learn how to also deal with weight at times.
But it goes both ways... I've been able to get my Camaro Z28 with 380bhp and it's 3400-3500 frame to lap the track like I'm Takumi in the 86 but it's now starting to feel sluggish and I know why... I'm getting faster and I'm most used to sims... they seam to have ample grip even with over 400lb-fts of torque at less than 3000rpm on tap... but the car seams to only feel less and less responsive... I may and will (as this'll also go with my story...)... have to make it lighter... I don't want to because I can't undo the change... maybe I'll do it on another Camaro but I've really started to see how weight can be a problem.
But on another... maybe it's a times a good thing to have weight on. When you make a car lighter, it just changes the Power/weight ratio and then you may have to either resort to changing your settings and/or changing the tire set to a stronger one to handle the change... plus... the giant machine... even if it is starting to feel like a brick... still feels like a brick that has some change to be a little less agile than a fly but it depends... but I figure in the end it's what you want...
If you always try to make a car lighter, you may not be able to to learn how to work with heavier cars... or it may get to a point even 2000lb cars seam too heavy... but on another it's better to learn how to make your car lighter but also working with weight, learning how to deal with both is an advantage with no real loss in mind besides time.
and if I get the chance I may make the car lighter and see what happens... it was also part of what I had for my research.

I can't picture a time when I would not enjoy it less I lost the settings or forgot to save some and had to do it again (and again, and again) or mess with some settings I know will be a comproimse elsewhere. It occured to me a few months ago that I could use the camber angle (I leave that alone for the most part) to gain grip as I needed it for a Grand Sport to beat a time Gabkicks had on Apricot hill with a Mines Skyline GTR34... and I could only at best get within a second of it... i'll either have to increase power... work around with settings to make the car faster on that tack... or go to the last resort and then make it lighter... problem is I would have to change tires to handle power and the rule is to do it on sims. So that is sorta out of the quesiton save if I want to lower power (which I'm being a bit reluncant to do.).

9. What do you think about this "quiz"
Eh... it's something to keep me busy... and distract me from the midterms that are driving me crazy... that's just me though... but something intresting I guess. Good one I guess.
In response to JW... I dunno... midterms are either comming up or in the middle of ... least mine... so timming is probally a reason why a lot aren't answering or something else. I dunno besides also the school server here is really off...

That's it from me, till later.

1: I think it's severly hampered by a lot (a LOT) of idiots, and maybe it's definition a little. I think of drift as 'driving in a manner that deliberatly exeeds the vehicles lateral traction'. It seems that's rather liberal.
2: Initial D, yo! I think Initial D is also hampered by a lot of idiots. Also, Itsuki is the ugliest character in anime.
3: Dual shock. My brother gave me his Blue Thunder wheel, but it sucks. I'd steer with the DS and use the pedals if I could, but using the R stick for brake/throttle is too touchy for me.
4: Power oversteer, mostly. Sometimes braking.
5: I've only done extensive suspention tuning for one drift car myself. Most cars I just drive with unadjusted stock or racing suspention.
6: I don't usually use other peoples settings. The ones I do I got from the drifting FAQ at GameFAQs. If I wanted more I'd go to GTvault.
7: The only extensive suspention tuning I've done for drifting was with an Integra.
I put Super Slicks on the front and Sim tires on the rear, then I read a tuning guide and did everything that said "produces oversteer". I hardly need the handbrake, it's great. It's funny to watch after a race, because the AI can't drive it. It spins out all the time.
8: I don't really understand the shock settings, or how GT calculates downforce. I just screw around untill something happens. I have an Elise that handles like a squirrel on speed in a room full of cats.
9: I had fun, hope you're getting what you wanted out of it.

I don't think we'd have to respond to some of the answers here but I wanted to say one thing or two in respose to Emohawk

1. Drifting is always going to be hampered by idiots. ANYTHING can be hampered or made looked down on or bad or something negative by any degree no matter what by someone. That's how things work or so I figure. All you can do is play your honest cards and do your best to represent when you want to or can of drifting or anything else.

Something tells me I left something out in that... oh well...

2. Same for Initial D. There are going to be idiots no matter what towards anything. A good example...? Off topic...?

Gundam Wing. Gundam wing brought the whole Mobile Suit Gundam world to America. We've got tons of wing fans and I'm one of them. But I must be one of those FEW Gundam wing fans that also respects and loves the other Gundam serrie's and don't bashes any of them save for MAYBE G-Savior (but how can you dislike something you haven't actually SEEN yet...)... doubtful since I have not actually seen that show. But here you go with many wing fans bashing anything that is not New Mobile Report Gundam wing, including anything related to Universal Century (the original Gundam universe), Future Century (G-Gundam, and a number of DBZ fans consider it a rip off of DBZ...to a small extent yes but G-Gundam is it's own thing), and so on...

I'm a somewhat hardcore fan of AC Gundam, but I also have a HUGE deal of respect for UC Gundam and any and all other Gundam universes. Maybe it's because I'm maturing or something but I can't find myself bashing other things or being a dolt about. Yet you've got a number of UC fans whom hate AC for not only what it is, but also potentially for it's fans or a fine mix of the previous two reasons and others I can't figure right this second.

On topic... it's the same for Initial D... Initial D is going to be known by some as the dolt's drifting show... but to a number of us that do know what 85, 86 and S14 and so on really mean rather than say... Hachi-Go, Hachi-Roku, etc and other crap like researching to a degree what goes on or having a ton of knowhow of cars prior to watching Initial D. It's an illustration and prime examples of too many things to list in relation to cars (and more important drivers) wrapped around in an involving story that is at times going to be a bit repetitive with some worthwhile developments that makes it worth watching 89% of the time or so I figure. Not to mention that becase it's a Manga/Anime, it's going to have those things that are a bit out of reality like an 18 year old with 5+ years of driving training able to out do cars and drivers he should have never stood a chance and even have the rare occurances of luck in some way working (Take the race against the speical EK9 agnist Tomoyuki in Episode 6 of stage 4 as a prime example...) or something else.

As for Itsuki being the ugliest character of anime... it's your opinion and all things are subjective... there are a list of characters that could be uglier but hell... I don't really look at a character so much to judge who they are by their looks (same for IRL people too) but also their character. I mean to an obvious degree sometimes appearances can tell a little to character but you will not really tell until you seem them act and speak to some extent.

Long stated crap aside... well that's about it. Sorry if I violated some rule or something but I wanted to say something.

I'd say more to something else but I'll spoil something on an Initial D fan-fiction someone is working on... I'd bother to point it out and then give something else I had in mind but I dunno if there's a rule saying no or something... I'll check the FAQ when I can but to the admins, would it be okay to mention a link to the said fan-fiction or least to the chapter I would want to focus to try and put part of a point I would want to state out? I'm sure on one end I'm going a bit to just try and prove a point but I can't be too careful or something.

not sure what else to say now... till later.

8.i sometimes enjoy tuning my car cuz sometimes i just cant wait to test out a new or added kind of modification. other times it anoys me to tune because i sometimes am so eager to drift.

9.i guess this quiz is fine. but i thought this quiz was going to be about testing us about knowledge of techniques, cars, etc.

5. Yes
6.
7. Add a little negative camber, slight negative toe in the front (I prefer an understeer feel to my cars, hence the preferred feint style) lowering, increase rear spring rates slightly, increase rear damping to slightly above front damping...
8. Its something to do even though it was posted months ago

1. I think drifting is fun, entertaining and can sometimes ( although I use it alot in GT3 , real-life's another story but im workin on it) help you in a race.

2. Umm.. what got me into drifting...Well first i just want to be a street racer anyway and then i started doing research. Initial D got me into it also and watching drifting videos. So i guess that's how I got started.

3. Right now im using the DS2 but im getting the steering wheel pretty soon.

4.I use a style that combines almost all of the drift techs. See I drift for speed not show, so im not trying to get serious angle while going in a turn ,im just trying to keep the speed through a corner. What I do is when i see the corner I jus react and depending on my speed I would either feint drift or most likely brake drift. But In one race i my use all the drift techs.

5. Yea I do

6. N/A

7. Well first i start with spring rate , making the front springs harder than the rear . That way the front will grip more and the rear will slide a little easier. then ride height, etc. And Brakes, LSD, and I turn TCS and ASM off.

8. Yea I enjoy tunning my ride, because i get to see what settings will work and which won't and i can probably improve my time.(I drive a RX7 Savanna)

9.It's cool I guess 👍 :)

1. What do you think about drifting? stupid, fun, entertaining or what?
fun and entertaining

2. What got you into to the world of drifting?
My V8 Vantage around seattle 40 times at 997hp:crazy: :ill:

3. What kind control do you use? DS2 or Driving wheel?
DS2

4. What kind drifting style do you use?
It depends on the car and the course but I use Feint, Braking, Over-Powering, and my own mix of Braking and Feint. Ex. F090/S @ Rome, slam the brakes through the corner from the outside at a -15 degree angle to the turn and punch-it 1/2-way through

5. Do you tune your own car for your drifting?
Yes

6. If you answered "no" to the question 5, then where do you get your tuning settings?
N/A

7. If you answered "yes" to the question 5, how do you start tuning your car?
TCS/ASM and suspension stiffening
8. Do you / Do you not enjoy tuning your car and why?
I enjoy tuning my car because it's good to figure out the way your car works and reacts to different setups

9. What do you think about this "quiz"
It's O.K.
