So the more and more threads that appear here I seem to see more and more arguments. What i wanna know is.. Is there actually any drifters out there who don't really care about the competition aspect and just get on with it?
What happened to coming on and helping others instead of saying "I know best and you cant drift that!" "I know best you cant use this and that track sucks"

Ofcourse I have a cheek to talk being in the H2H and constantly running team battles but I can still have fun!

There is so many guys out there who just drift? If there is fancy giving me a shout?

So what do you guys actually prefer? The competition factor or the fun of the drift or even appreciating the skill of others?

I personally do it cause I enjoy it, whether in real life or in gt5. I enjoy the excitement of tandems and the learning curve that goes with it.

Yeah there is no one that is at the peak of drifting.. ofcourse you can be the best.. but you never stop getting better.. so the learning curve is always enjoyable

👍 indeed.. if you like drifting much then add me on psn :) can come drift with UDT/D-Max anytime, we always like new faces to drift with

I never compete, probly never will, i just don't find it fun. Have way more fun just chillin in a car i like, with people i like instead of there being drama about bad judging calls blablabla

Warning! This post my contain my life story ;)

I started drifting on GT5 after going to a nearby meet and watching what these guys could do. Sure, i had watched D1 & FD on TV before but had never really gotten into it. Once i saw the beautiful 4 man tandem to end the event, i thought "i gotta try this." Unfortunately i'm 16 and i've never heard of a P plater drifting their only car on the side :nervous:, so i went on GT, bought a premium S15, fully modded it and started practicing. I learnt tuning from camber to gear ratios and applied my new knowledge to a few of my wasted rear wheel drive beasts. After getting margianal experience on GT and mastering the difficulty of a 900* DFP, i started youtubing & googling, trying to find out everything on this new to me sport. I spent the first two weeks of my christmas school holidays learning all i could. I started H2H #1, mainly to see what everyone in the community could do and was simply blown away by the skill of the guys on GTP. I decided to register with Southern Sliderz and have made 2 team vids for them.

Ultimately, school holidays ended and my life fell back into the usual routine of sport, school, homework and more sport. I ran out of time to continue working on the H2H and took a step back from GTP all together. Instead i decided to spend my weekends that weren't spent with footy & homework getting back to drifting.

I have come a very long way since that first dabble in drift trial with a supped up S15 & i have continued for a few very simple reasons.
1) It is fun
2) It gives me a reason to play GT5
3) The replays of a good tandem is breathtaking
4) The GTP drift community is filled to the brim with knowledgeable, very friendly people. Who all appear to be up to help out in anyway they can
5) I have fallen in love with the art of drifting. Pure and simple, if it weren't for GT i probably would have forgotten all about that small local meet of unexperienced guys in their S15's & Skylines.
6) I've gotten quiet rather good at it and would rather continue honing my skills, then move on to a new game that i am a noob too
7) The pleasure of being mere centimetres away from three people at 90kmh on some of the worlds most famous racetracks can not be beaten by any other video game experience i've had to date
8) AFL Live isn't out yet ;)

While i am happy solo drifting, i way prefer tandeming with good experienced guys online. Not the DH's that "drift race" trying to beat everyone across the line, but those who will wait if someone spins, and will applaud a good run.
Unfortunately, these people are hard to come byu in online rooms (unless you go to a Tsukuba room :yuck:) so i enter as many competitons & battles as i can. I don't care if i win or not, but i'm always there, giving it my best. As this is simply the best way to get fun, clean tandem drifting.

OMFG that is by far the longest post i have ever made. *wipes sweet from brow*

I drift for fun only. When it stops being fun, I quit... If someone ask me "how to", I´ll try to help them. If it gets to serious its not fun at all. Like D1 training. It is boring and gets to serious.
I have some PSN friends, and we drift together when we are online. If many of us are on, we have a public server.
I´m always open to get new friends to drift with, so just add me if you´re interested. Most of us have decent drift skills (outrun some teammembers lol), but everyone is welcome to drift with us, and learn and teach things.

Edit: We tandem as often as possible, with a wide range of cars and bhp. From 130-900+ bhp. Mostly on Suzuka East since it is easy to link corners and tandem whole track. From 2 to 16 peoples. I feel good when we tandem the whole track without spinning out or bump/crash. And of course talking about nothing and everything, and showing our new cars.

I have heard of a few people drifting one is 16 and I believe there is a 14 year old over in the UK drifting and this is in real life not a game.

Yes, but i'm sure their very wealthy parents don't intend their teenager to drive around everywhere in a built to drift vehicle. I'm sure they use another car for their daily driving, which to put simply i cant afford. It's drift car & carpool; One thats not that good at either; or driving car & GT5 for me.

I'm sure that once i finish year 12 and start working full time i can start getting serious about this sort of thing, but until then its GT5 for me :)

You're correct. The would be Duane Mckeever, 15 now with a 700hp RB26 powered 180sx

i am not to sure what there financial status is but you can start drifting for $1000 over here. thought it may not be the glamours set-up but it would be a start

edit: An Aussie by the name of Luke Fink won the jdm allstars series that that kid is in.

Well for me competitive drifting is pretty stupid, always ends up as a massive argument and its all a bit too serious IMO.

I drift to relax and have fun, not argue about it on the internet as though my life depended on the victory.

I drift for fun, absolutely. Im naturally a competitive person, so I have chosen to enter competitions, for fun. So I guess you could say that I drift for fun, haha...

I drift for the fun of it. I really can't tandem well with others. Half the people, I out drift in 2 corners, keep in mind I use an old 80s MR2, so that half of the people just aren't very good. The other half who are good tend to drive more powerful cars and lose me because I am underpowered.

It's really hard to find people who are in between that can keep up with me and can drift side by side. So I wouldn't feel right competing, and don't like drifting beefed up cars. I like my low powered setups.

My real challenge is between me, the track and my car, always trying to find the perfect links and lines. If there is somebody with me, is only to help me to see the best lines (specialy at custom tracks), and my tandeming style is enough to not touch my partner but also not get blinded by his smoke...

So between the smoke, the angled car and the apex, there is an imaginary triangle where my car should fits in.

The best feeling after a tandem session is:
- Hey, great lines! I like your style!
- Idem, mate! Lets do it more times anyday!

I think, to reach the real fun of the drifting in GT5 some things have to get organised. Tire and car restrictions help avoiding accidents. and if you get a hp limit, you can get very close tandeming as well. Whats more fun than that?
With fun, also goes respect in my opinion. if you can't keep up, or can't do something others can, step out and practise imo.

It's rare, but I do sometimes find people I am able to drift close behind. I find most of them in the Japanese rooms. Oddly enough, more of them have similar driving styles as mine and use similar cars.

On a few occasions though, I've had a few people who had an overpowered car stick behind me. One guy did for almost an hour. When I tried to let him pass, he'd slow down. He later told me he liked seeing my MR2 drift, haha. :dopey:

thats a similar concept to the way i look at tandem(ing).

pretty much everything has been said here on why i like to drift.

-the excitement of a four-car-tandem-replay on real, or even fake tracks.
-to get better at your own lines when you see a better/ more experienced driver.
-and to have fun in a healthy battle/competition.
(healthy, meaning organized)
