If you did drive an FF car in reverse and attempted to do a drift thinking that it's technically a "RWD" car, then you're facing a big problem. Apparently your "rear wheels" (in reality, your front wheels) do the steering and not your "front wheels" (which is actually the rear wheels). :D

If you attempt to drift a FWD car in reverse, you face two problems. One, your steering wheels are the wheels in the back, so any steering input is amplified. Two, the vehicle is going to be very rear heavy, with the same problematic pendulum effect you get in a Porsche 911.

You will likely have to just settle for a"J-Turn".

In practical terms, with the difficulty of using throttle-lift to induce oversteer (which is very easy to do in real life with certain FWD vehicles), FWD vehicles are difficult to drift in GT5... and handbrake is almost a necessity (though ABS off and a rearward bias work, too).

Handbrake use (meaning using the handbrake to set up the drift and trim the line) is also prominent in professional drifting (which is why they have such long-throw handbrake levers), but relying on it exclusively is poor technique (on an FR) and ruins tandems.

RE: FWD, RWD, AWD, handbrake, lift, flick, etcetera... "real drifting yo": you know the rules of the forum, kiddies, please play nice.

Patiently waiting for a video of this, have bags of popcorn ready!

Video of what? I have one of a J-Turn at last year's PCOTY testing. I don't have videos of my scandinavian flicks in the parking lot with the Mazda6, WRX and (shudders) Kia Picanto back in the 09 tests, though.... though I'm wondering if anyone has evidence of what we did with the STI... :D

It all happened on a private parking lot, with the permission of the lot owner and under the strict supervision of professional drivers.

I think I'm safe... unless one of the participating manufacturers complains again... Don't think anyone will complain this year, though. The only really bad incident we had was when a passenger van decided to do an impromptu trail-brake drift when we were doing instrumented braking tests on the racetrack portion of the event.

Which would have been cool, except we were braking in a straight line. Needless to say, said manufacturer is more likely to keep completely mum about this than complain.

Drifting is a way of expressing your style, like fluiditity for some, relaxed for others and well for FF drifters, Odd.

isnt it kinda like cheating though because the power of the front wheels is pulling you through the corner wherever you point the front wheels your probly going to go that way...:indiff:

Which is people's point with 4WD 'drifting', but we're not allowed to speak about that.

You are, you're just not allowed to start a flamewars-ish debate proclaiming that drifting is X and only X. ;)

Say what you will about FF drifting, if all FF drifters were as skilled as the guy in the above Nikko video, I figure there'd be a lot less complaints about ff drifters:sly:

It's not Drifting if it's FF setup no matter how cool or effective it is. Now if he could get the front end to slide while steering and still accelerating through a turn then come and see me!
