I was talking about the 2 boards directly under the seat brackets, the 2 other boards that those are resting on(front and rear) an the fact that those 2 are not directly connected to the risers, which are there for support, no? In the front it looks like the 2 side screws go through the risers and into the added blocks under the seat bracket. But in the rear it looks like it just sits on the 1" lip that the board creates. Doesn't look very sturdy.

I think this is where your eyes deceive you dave_sz, those 2 screws don't go through to the block/board under the seat runner. The front on photo clearly shows this. DSC01972.jpg
The block/board is for mounting the runner, notice the rear is just past halfway back. DSC01974.jpg So the front has no more support than the rear.

I am currently doing some testing with the Porsche Carrera Wheel (and Clubsport Paddles), which I will be reviewing very soon. As soon as I am through with testing (with a PWC Giveaway to follow, right here at GTP!) I will get back to work on the cockpit.

I must admit, my eyes keep wandering over to the corner of the room where one of my cockpits sits. My mind goes through what I have left to do, how long it will take, new ideas, etc... So, I am eager to get back to work on it.

First I will finish the writeup (first post) as it currently stands. Then I will get to paneling (which will be added to the first post as well, once finished). After that, it's the BK mount.

Okay Ive been tuned now for over a week...

There will be very shortly. I am finally done with some previous engagements. Now I can get back to framing my rig, and shortly after (or before, haven't decided yet) the BK mount.

Some work space is being cleared as we speak.

Probably not going to go that far. Although a door like enclosure on one side (solid on the other) is a possibility. First things first, though.

I'll most likely frame first, as I don't have the other part I need for the BK mount, as of yet.

Nothing much lately, unfortunately. I just haven't had the time. I go back to work soon (no cast anymore, and I'm walking again) so I'll have less time, but with more money. It should balance out rather nicely though. The "more money" part being key.

Nevertheless, I hope to get paneling done on both cockpits soon. At least the uprights.

Currently, I'm waiting for a response from Fanatec regarding a set of pedals that need to be replaced, that belong to a friend of mine, but reside at my house (with the secondary cockpit and wheel).

My standard pedals had a brake sensitivity problem, and they replaced them no questions asked, so I expect the same should apply here. Still, no response after a few days (Thomas usually replies promptly).

We'll see what happens.

UPDATE:

The pedals have been replaced (en-route), so I'll be back to work on the cockpit tomorrow (Yay!)

First, structural support, then panels.

UPDATE:

I added a stabilizer bar to the uprights (i.e between 2 uprights on front of cockpit), to which I attached the front paneling. I will cut a few slits (or some shapes) into the paneling, both on the front and the sides. Behind which I will be installing wire mesh which will provide areas for the blue LED lights to shine through.

Don't worry, I will add pictures tomorrow (when I'm not at work).

Here is a little update...

First I added a stabilizer bar between the two front uprights:

Then I cut out some paneling (pine) and secured using some small finishing screws. A little sanding here and there, and it now looks like:

I also found some wire mesh at work:

I will be cutting out some ventilation areas on the front and side paneling. The above mesh will be cut and placed behind.

Some blue LED light bars will be purchased (example below) and placed under the wheel tray:

With the silver mesh cutouts, and black painted frame (coming soon after paneling is finished), the effect should be interesting.

How is the shifter down at the realistic shifter position connected to the wheel?

I'm asking because the cable provided with the shifter set is only 30 cm long, so no way would it reach the wheel.

You use a longer Cable, Fanatec can sell you one, check the longer pedal cable or you can source your own.

I have updated the top of the first post with a few pictures of the current state of the build. So, newcomers to this thread don't have to scroll down so far (or read through a lot of pages) to see what the cockpit looks like when completed (or, "near complete" as it currently stands).

If I had all the wood at one time, and could just focus on building without distractions, it could easily be built in an afternoon, or over a weekend.

My problem (like many who have built cockpits) is I have made a lot of changes over the course of the build, and had plenty of distractions as well.

With all the parts, design, and tools at hand, it would be a quick build.

I mean, all you have to do is screw a few screws into 2 pieces of wood and your done :)

But so is building a house with some added electrical and glass haha

There's always more to a build than meets the eye. Yet, this build is quite rudimentary with regards to difficulty, and tools needed.

Only 4 types of boards and 2 types of screws for the whole build (not counting Inverted Pedal Mount, directions will be up for that soon).
