Liking the new A3. Looks like a nice colour too, it seems to have a purple hue where the sun hits it.

Yeah, it's a fun, little car. Sun hasn't been shining more or less since the day we picked it up but it did look a little purple in direct sunlight for sure!

So I threw in the new to me axle and got new dust shields for the front discs as the old ones were super rotten. I just cut them a little so I could get them on, said **** removing the hubs..! I ono if people even do that to install dust shields.
27854328629_1190bb657a_b.jpg

Also did sway bar end links and inner bushings
39631963601_69ba91ce7b_b.jpg

Mechanically, the car should be decent enough now. The inner CV joint of the new axle sounds like it's making a little noise but we have to drive the car a little and see what it's like. Looks like I've got hold of a fender, possibly front end so that's cool..

The diesel Yaris work van is as much of a trooper as my Funcargo, I find myself borrowing this thing home from time to time because it's awesome lol.

When we collected the GTti from the tuner we parked the red Turbo Charade outside for a few weeks because it doesn't really snow does it? Yes, it does and we're getting absolutely hammered lol.
25798322688_68c234be02_b.jpg

The Funcargo saga continues. The lower bolts for the front fenders snapped a few years ago so today I drilled them out and made new threads
25798335368_5f849a83ba_b.jpg

Car is now down on the ground again awaiting more parts. Did some minor stuff on the GTti also, got nearly all the lights working. Raise it, install new CV joint boots on it and probably some other things I forget and then it should be ready for state inspection when spring comes :D

I wonder if the roof of the parts car has buckled down yet.. It's in that pile somewhere.. I said we were getting hammered with snow.

I got a set of tire skates, would be great to have two sets so we can juggle cars around more easily.
25221581877_f014bec4d9_b.jpg

I collected a few parts some weeks ago for the Funcargo. Bolted up the fender, with the new to me control arm, drive shaft and new sway bar links in place the car was driveable. With the sun shining and a beautiful -10C/14F day and no road salt on the road up to the workshop, I figured it was time for a test drive.. Threw some winter wheels on it and went to town. Or atleast around on the country side for a few miles.. Pardon the mis-aligned hood and fender.
25221359217_649d9c1620_b.jpg

At this point I am debating what to do.. The bumper mounts in a bracket that's bent from earlier, sitting left of the AC radiator blank (to the left of the radiator). After the crash last year the car is also missing a bracket for the fender and fender liner. You can see the bracket right above/behind the windshield washer tank on the passenger side, and that it’s missing on the other side.
39382439934_27d5393470_b.jpg

I could ghetto rig the front end pretty well. Having said that it bothers me and I have brand new dealer sourced brackets ready to weld in. I would like to clean the car very good before doing this and also take care of a few other things while I’m at it. State inspection runs out in February. I’m contemplating to get a new front strut (the old one was bent in the crash, last part I need to buy) and new rear shocks (the old ones were worn out), do a state inspection so that’s not on the to do list anymore and then tear into the car a little when I can clean it down properly.

One more shot because driving the car made me happy
39194474655_a55bd16dae_b.jpg

I’m about 40% into the insurance payout so that’s cool..

Studded snow tyres on a Funcargo?!! I'm living in the wrong country for this cool stuff. Although I did have gravel tyres on the MR2 for a little bit.

Gotta love studded tires.. I had a lot of winter fun with the Corolla KE70 in my avatar some years back and a few other RWD Toyotas as well. Driving on frozen lakes is fun, especially with rally type studded tires!

New work van: So clean.. Won't last long.. :D But will come handy hauling car stuff! The guys at work have prohibited me from buying coilovers and big wheels

Took the GTti bumper off the car and took it to work, so I can make proper supports for the rear side markers

Iteration 1. **** I love having access to 3D printers.
39907356824_129cc8d134_b.jpg

When these brackets are done I will re-do the bulb sockets for the lights. I wired in a set of bulb sockets for the license plate lights I had extra for the Funcargo, only to realise it's not enough space for them behind the bumper so they fall out when I try to fit the bumper. Apart from stuff like throwing on stock suspension and steering wheel, I can only think of a few things left to do before state inspection this spring.. I need to change a few CV joint boots and replace one of the rear wheel studs, apart from that the car is really nearing 'done' mechanically. I want to get the hood, front fenders and rockers painted this year as well just to make it feel 'complete'. Then drive it.. I am so looking forward to driving this thing again :D

Goals for 2018: Elevate further, more cars on plates/state inspected. I'm at the point where I'm getting too old to be lying on the floor wrenching so getting a two post lift is really high up on my wish list. Also eyeing a sand blasting cabinet and more work bench space. I have found out, when you get less time to wrench, you need to be able to do so more effectively

May have found an owner for the red G100 Turbo, a car I bought four years ago just to avoid it falling into the wrong hands.

So a package arrived at work.. Full of car parts from @SVX down in New Zealand - really on the other side of the (GT)Planet :D
40678087121_5e162f2111_b.jpg

Inside were several things SVX has been yarding for me.. All super mad JDM naturally. Most importantly, a genuine mad JDM Funcargo front mask and grill.
I just had to throw the bumper and headlight back on to test fit. Stoked!!
38867674140_020e5223c8_b.jpg

Bumper will be Plastidipped black, need to get the front mask painted. Lots to do before spring so I just gotta do work..!

I've seen those yellow bits somewhere before!
That looks a lot better than the Yaris style front grille. JDM FTW!

JDM for life..!

So I finished up my 3D printed brackets, not the best quality but who cares when they sit inside the bumper.
40934253711_0b9ba8b701_b.jpg

Holding my awesome USDM markers in place. Remember when I got the GTti I set out to have a car that could have been built for a USDM jam by a Japanese guy. Got issues? Hell yes.
40040157725_3d8f214c3d_b.jpg

Who needs a van anyway?
26061130547_9c3e03b8fd_b.jpg

Among the mad JDM stuff I got from NZ were a Funcargo lower console with extra cup holders (car now has 7 in total) and a coin holder instead of an ashtray. Nerdy me digs it..! Now I suddenly need a 2 DIN head unit :D
40934256761_3a55f71f9b_b.jpg

So cool seeing the car being pieced together with stuff I got :D did you find my surprise? Registration sticker that I took off one of the cars I got parts from. It should be in the bag with the badge!

To be honest bud, I was so stoked over the badge I didn't notice your surprise.. Will have a look for it in the bag the next time I'm in the garage!

Yeah, this is pretty rad :cool: The Funcargo front badge and the wind deflectors will really set the car apart together with the front mask..!

Speaking of parts, I also got a rear light garnish for the GTti, finally..! It came split in two parts due to bad packaging, but I epoxied it up and put it on the car, you don't see it a couple of feet away..

So 80s
27080436728_d0b0552e96_b.jpg

The paint has its blemishes here and there so the car could do with a full repaint. Then I would tear into it and do a full respray and we're not there yet. I usually hate doing stuff I know will be re-done down the road and I'm not even sure we can hit the exact color (custom mixed) but I have decided to have the front end and the rockers painted to body color this year. Of course owning a custom car is a never ending project, but with the car in one color it will really feel complete now.

So the snow keeps coming.. Now down from the rooftops :D
41023824761_79255f9d70_b.jpg

Drilled out one of the bent brackets residing on the Funcargo
40983665092_732ed62779_b.jpg

My first time drilling out spot welds actually.. It was fun. New ready to weld in vs old

Polished up the headlights
40316951314_63e27bb2c0_b.jpg

Some more bits and pieces to sort out before first drive/state inspection.. Weld in the new bracket, Plastidip front bumper, raise the car, OEM steering wheel and figure out head unit now that I am relocating that. Need to get the grill painted but I will do that after state inspection..

Plasti dipped the front bumper

My buddy wanted to weld in the bracket so he welded in the bracket. Next time I want to weld! Gotta clean it up and paint it.

There's something extremely satsifying with putting proper wheels on a car
40507832715_89becfca90_b.jpg

The roads were clear and dry last night.. Driveway to the garage excepted.. Got stuck
40689484634_74bdce24d6_b.jpg

Took the car for a little spin.. The first drive since 2014. It felt immensely good. Based on first impressions only, but the car pulls so hard with the new setup, very smooth and idles and drives like a stock car when you're not on it.

So with the GTti I think we're down to CV joint boots and changing a wheel stud, plus the usual raising of the car, stock steering wheel etc. before it's ready for state inspection. Would be cool to get this done so I could tinker a little with my other cars as well this year :)

Painted the bracket on the Funcargo, came out well I think!

Soon ready for state inspection this thing too, just change up the wheel and mount a few bits :P

Also sold our red Daihatsu turbo orphan #1 (you know it's bad when you have several, although #2 is not mine) the other day, will be going to a good home. Frees up space which is good, will be keeping close enough tabs on this thing. It's a glorious piece of an 80s survivor.
41144241914_9aab705c9d_b.jpg

Front end back on. Need to adjust the hood and paint the front mask.

41103623575_58f22224d4_b.jpg

Bought a 2 DIN head unit and installed it. For Toyotas you need some brackets at the end because why go with a DIN standard when you can make super wide 2 DIN players.. I found a HU that looked pretty clean and that has a big shiny knob (!), so it ties in with my aftermarket HVAC controls. It's all in the details! Pleased with how it came out, it looks pretty OEM I think!
40196140780_9aa4a4ab43_b.jpg

Oh hell yes. :D Nothing like seeing your favourite project getting reborn with the very own parts you supplied

I hear ya, it must be pretty cool knowing this happens half across the globe. Well, fully across actually.

We had a field day, all the cars were started and driven out of the garage. So many dead batteries..!
42174361051_05515cec0d_b.jpg

Who would have thought some years ago the turbo rat would be the one bringing the Funcargo to life
40367150740_5cb91a2ea1_b.jpg

Put summer wheels on the daily, I naturally had to try.. Must resist making it unusable..
41453344924_28e7db0014_b.jpg

Preparations for state inspection is so boring.. It's like taking a few steps back
41453356034_23213df707_b.jpg

So I realised the Funcargo hood was sitting too high because the lower rad support was pushed up from wear and tear over the years. This scientific method of straightening it out was applied. I will change it out, eventually.
40367154910_ebe9a680bc_b.jpg

It did work pretty well. Maybe needs a little more but this should be fine for now, atleast it doesn't look fully retarded.
41273812035_ec11dd91fa_b.jpg

Somehow I've ended up with having state inspections next week on both the Funcargo and GTti, so it's a bit more wrenching before we're there. Gotta make the Charade ready this weekend and next week, the Funcargo only needs fender liners and a new battery and it's ready.

I'm also now on Instagram as well, the screen name is a shocker: eiriksmil

Spent way too long trying to remove the GTti rear hub, realised I could change the stud without removing the hub.. Doh. Then I realised the new stud didn't fit. Double doh. Then I realised I had complete set of Charade 16v engine, transmission, drive shafts and hubs with brakes sitting on a pallet. I was thinking about getting rid of that pallet - luckily I hadn't so I could snag a stud from the hub :D A little too short but whatever, it works
41316099785_47eca568b6_b.jpg

I took the Funcargo home.. Really feels like an achievement, considering how it look last year
27345345877_9e111df8ce_b.jpg

Both Funcargo and Charade nearly passed state inspection on first tries :D

Funcargo failed on brake discs - noteworthy because I replaced discs two years ago.. Went with OEM discs this time.

Did CV joint boots on the GTti prior to inspection, raised it, installed non-tinted front side windows, steering wheel ++

Can't wait to put the coils back on. Quite a difference lol

Took the GTti home
28681324938_d4507f34d7_b.jpg

Just a few minor stuff, like the horn not working so I soldered it up.. The GTti has now passed inspection, I used it daily for a few days and have enjoyed that a lot. 250 miles done this year, some observations: A little exhaust smell under load/boost, so need to look into that. No leaks or smoke from anywhere so that is a major accomplishment in my book. I've noticed a few broken interior parts etc so will source those, will also adjust the valves and it sounds like changing wheel bearings is about time. In other words, a few minor things to address but I am very happy about this.

Great seeing the progress on all this (sorry for all the like notifications!). Those first-gen Megane wheels are getting everywhere, aren't they :D

What colour are you going for in the end with the Charade? Did used to really like the turquoise of the one you had years ago. I've lost track of what happened to that one - is it technically still one of the cars you own?

Funny how much better the Mirage looks on decent wheels...

I saw your post, we were discussing we had seen the wheels on something before but couldn't point out what car they came on. Then you wrote Mk1 Megane, of course! I never knew they were 4x100!

I am growing more and more fond of the 'custom dark beige and something' the car is painted in. For now I'll just get the patch work color matched to that. If I was to repaint it someday, I'd do it up in Hummer Sage Green, because I absolutely love that color for a custom car. Depending on when a full re-spray happens, I may grow old by that time and then I'll probably paint it in the OEM white color my car had from factory. It's been white, orange, then two tone orange and black and then this dark beige champagne.

The turquoise car was a good one.. Going on ten years since that was in Retro Cars..! It was turning rusty and was parted six years ago. Many of the parts do live on :)

So with cars being state inspected, I lowered the Funcargo and stole a set of wheels off my buddy
43118356972_55ac046717_b.jpg

I'd been scouting for new wheels for a while, sold the Rotiforms just a few months ago to get something fresh.. These popped up in the classifieds, picked them up the day after. They are Tecnomagnesio Sports and they fit the bill perfectly for someone who always has been a fan of the functional but understated look of cars like the early Impreza STIs (the mid 90s versions), the Renault Clio Williams and so on.

A fuel hose sprung a leak on the GTti so I dropped the tank to replace the lines and hoses, a good time to clean up the tank as well

Are many of the pics on these last pages dead for you? They appear dead to me but not if I look at my own posts in edit mode

Not much to report over the past month.. I've put some miles on the GTti and enjoyed that

Went to Cyprus for holidays, did more house work than car work. Managed to drain the coolant on the GTI and got a coolant leak so it's out of fresh coolant :D
43856473092_6ee3144c0d_b.jpg

I did wash it and it looks good parked (apart from that damn dent). I want a proper place to store it and I would like to get some work done to it.

The Mirage is a happy camper, I've put about 5k miles on it until now so total is around 28k. The service light tells me it's time for a service but I'm struggling with making an appointment. I've never had a car in for service.. Having said that I'm learning how non car people own cars though, I drive it, sometimes I clean it, I have had the heater core replaced under warranty and I fill it up with gas once or twice a month :D

Yes there are quite a few missing that won't load. Did you link them from anywhere or are they uploaded to GTP?

Linking to Flickr, been doing that for years.. Seems like GTP cache the photos though. Now shows properly on my laptop but not my phone.

I have finally started tearing into the white G10.. I like being somewhat finished with one project before I start something else, so with the GTti as complete as it now is I figured it was time.

Will be doing a brake service (the car has been sitting a lot and you can tell easily), find a brake fluid leak I apparently have, do fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid, possibly ATF), grease up stuff and ball joints. Starting with the rear brakes.

Also been having issues with linking from Flickr. Thought it was just me.

Still sucks less than Photobucket though :odd:

More G10 stuff!

Finished up the rear drums, cleaned the inside of the drums and greased up the brake mechanism.
43106962045_fef4a3200e_b.jpg

Noticed that brake fluid was very low. Took off the master cylinder and the brake booster appears to have been drinking brake fluid over the past 37 years. By design the booster (which works on vacuum) will try to suck brake fluid in, the rear seal stops that from happening. Over time it may still happen, I think the gunk just builds up more and more and then the booster progressively sucks in more and more fluid. It was nasty.
42203936540_e195d9d48a_b.jpg

So I cleaned it up and re-installed it. Used the old gaskets and seals, I will source new ones and change them in the future. I will pay close attention to the brake fluid level and also look more closely for leaks elsewhere. I have had the car for six years but I am only now really getting down and dirty with it.
30144595318_462987ebe8_b.jpg

I love a good excuse for buying a new tool. Brake bleeder - so you don't always have to call a friend for help bleeding brakes. I have put off replacing brake fluid on several cars, most notably the Funcargo, so now I can get that done as well. Bled the brakes with fresh fluid.
30144599238_c44e6a5c01_b.jpg

Car rolls much more easily and one step closer to plates, a thing that may or may not happen in the near future. With the GTti being 'done' (it is road legal and almost everything works) I can now atleast concentrate on the G10. I don't like having many cars in parts at the same time, that is a good way to not get any work done at all.
44013115451_d7e86163e1_b.jpg

Bonus - getting to take the GTti to buy brake fluid and lunch
29076087857_c6ac8dfc3b_b.jpg

Not too much has happened lately, we got ourselves 10k sq ft. of trees and brushes to convert into a weekend home so focus is on this and work these days..

Doesn't mean we don't get stuff done. G10 is back on jack stands
42676363920_d83261182e_b.jpg

Because I've now finally got a Zerk/grease fitting in place in one of the ball joints. On these you need to replace the whole control arm, which is NLA, so this is my attempt on getting this car in order. Now that the brakes are better and if I can get these ball joints done in the near future, possibly I can attempt state inspection.
42676352110_eed584cd67_b.jpg

Basically, you run a hose from a grease gun into the fitting and fill it up with grease. Looks promising, next to the collapsed ball joint on the right (the left one looked the same before grease)

Summer daily status update, 312k km/194k miles.. Chugging along, alternator (or water pump) bearing is making noise and I think the new-to-me drive shaft is making a little noise. Atleast I'll try to have a look at the bearing(s) come winter, both alternator and water pump are original on the car, together with the radiator.. After all it's 18 years old so it's not too shabby.. :)
