ENGE LOSES F3000 TITLE
2002-10-01 16:49:00
Tomas Enge has been stripped of his F3000 crown after failing a drugs test.

The FIA world council decided on Tuesday that Enge would be excluded from the results of the 2002 Hungarian F3000 race after testing positive for cannabis.

The decision means that Sebastian Bourdais takes the title, with Enge dropping to second in the championship.

An FIA statement read: "Having studied the medical reports regarding the positive ‘A’ and ‘B’ anti-doping tests for Formula 3000 driver Tomas Enge, and having heard the submissions from the parties concerned, the World Motor Sport Council decided that Tomas Enge will be excluded from the results of the 2002 Hungarian F3000 race.

"Tomas Enge’s licence will be suspended for 12 months. However, the licence suspension will be suspended on condition that Mr Enge tests negative in random dope tests to be conducted over the next 12 months. The times and locations of these tests will be decided by the FIA."

News of Enge’s positive drugs test emerged before the final F3000 race of the year at Monza. But the Czech driver was allowed to race under appeal in Italy and clinched the title by three points.

This and Tomas Scheckter's little 'indiscretion' leave me speechless. I know these guys are under a lot of pressure to perform, but let's face it, they're looking to get into a circle of the top 20-22 people in the world, and they go and do something ridiculous like this! I mean, Enge may have got away with it had he been partaking in the off-season, but really...

It defies belief.

Not the best career move I must admit, I suppose you have to be dedicated in his position and smoking cannabis just shows that he isnt.

Shame though as I thought he was pretty good.

Smoking cannabis? All the big British celebraties smoke cannabis. I thought that was just a known fact ...

I applaud the governing bodies vigilance regarding drugs testing but I rather doubt Enge got any race advantage from being doped up :D!

As long as he wasn't so wasted that he couldn't drive safely I really don't see that it's any of their business really (other than the 'bringing the sport into disrepute' aspects of course).
