Engine sounds. A cry for help

OK, to frame this rant...

After a really shaky start to GT5, I've really been coming around to it since getting time to put the hours in. While there are a ton of development choices made I personally don't agree with, now I'm playing by keeping all cars unmodified, only driving premium cars & choosing tyres that aren't too sticky, it's a lot of fun.

BUT...

The interior view audio in GT5 is just unforgivable. I love racing/driving games, and they are the main reason I invested in a high end surround sound system, but the exaggerated synthesized 'gearbox whine' on every car in GT5s cockpit view ruins the experience for me and kills the excitement of driving dream cars.

Whats most frustrating is that there are actually some great engine/exhaust sounds in the game! At tickover for instance, or by selecting rear view, some cars sound awesome, and really exciting, but in straight up cockpit view I'm forced to endure the sound of a kitchen blender on steroids drowning out the lovely engine & exhaust soundtrackon every car.

I've found myself hitting rear view whilst on the straights to avoid the hideous audio - and looking behind you on a driving sim doesn't exactly benefit either the immersion level, or lap times ;-)

I'm just not buying into the fact that it's all in the name of realism either... While I've (unfortunately) not had the opportunity to hoon around in an Enzo or Veyron, I have been lucky enough to have done a few track days & Aston & Porsche track 'experiences' - and guess what - none of the cars I drove sounded like kitchen blenders at high revs....

If in an update Polyphony added at least an option to the audio to let the player opt to have the engine/exhaust noise you get via rear view whilst in the cockpit I would be a happy man. In fact I'd happily sacrifice more premium cars for this to better enjoy those in the game...

I've not noticed the whine on unmodified road cars. I've only noticed the whine when the car has been given a fully adjustable, racing transmission. AFAIK, the whine is caused by the straight cut gears that racing cars have and road cars don't.

I agree. The tranny whine is a little too much. I sometimes don't even bother with the customized transmission due to the fact that it will ruin the sound of the engine.

And you're absolutely right, some cars in this game sound bloody fantastic! It's unfortunate that the transmission whine has to ruin it. Even in replays when you're watching on 'tv' view, you hear the transmission more than the engine! Correct me if i'm wrong but I don't think this is ever the case. I have yet to hear the transmission drowning out the sound of a v8 with a full race exhaust while watching it on tv.

It is not that extreme in every race car....

And that is how cars should sound in a video game!

That is what I was hoping for in GT5 - but ......

I am hoping for a patch to lowing the super blender effect as well, I only use bump and cockpit and have started using loud race BGM to subdue the blender noise.

I thought it was a glitch or something with my sound setup... I can't hear the engine revs in the interior views.... is this just me? I can barely tell when to shift, especially with rear engine cars... for front engine cars I can hear the engine, but with cars like a Ferrari, all I hear are the tires and the transmission whining... anybody understand what the hell is going on?

And move the engine sounds to the center channel where it belongs, instead of coming out of the far side of my 5.1 sound system.

I guess PD thinks that people playing on a 5.1 home theatre have their L/R speakers set 2 feet apart right in front of the screen.

One rear-engine cars, the engine sound comes from the rear speakers if running 5.1 or higher, while skids, etc come from the C/L/R speakers. (Which again is silly since my surround speakers are 10 feet away from where I'm racing). Sounds like you aren't hearing any rear speakers.

That video is possibly the worst one anyone could use to showcase what it's like. The sound is so horribly distorted and amplified.

I thought this too, so I recalibrated my setup and everything, checking for sound from each individual speaker (I run a 5.1 too) but no dice... I hear front engine cars okay, but when it comes to anything else in the interior view, I hear nothing but the tires and cars whizzing around me...

So now I'm stuck playing the chase cam view, (which is horrid) just so I can hear when to change gears.... when I look behind me in the interior view, I can hear the engine, I guess the game is trying to put the engine sound behind me like you said, but it's not doing it.... quite frustrating... I might just switch the game audio settings to 2 channel...

+1 for this thread!

The best engine sound in GT5 I got so far, is with the Viper GTSR Team Oreca race car... but not in the race.. before the start, where the camera circles around your car and you can play with the throttle.

But the transmission howl in the race is truly disappointing, it made me turn down the volume of the effects and crank up the custom music volume so I am not annoyed by it too much any more..

Well I play with Bose Headphones, and I can´t complain about the transmisson whine being to loud.

I would like to have more lively exhaust notes though. But we all have discussed this to death.

A funny thing I saw when clicking the link that ruf-ctr2 posted.

This is the video he posted:

And now compare to the actual car in this video (incar footage starts at about 30 seconds)

Isn´t it freaking amazing how close that is?

And now please don´t tell me that Rfactor sounds like a youtube video....

It sounds pretty darn good!! A lot better and more immersive than GT5 I´m afraid. I respect and enjoy what PD has created, it´s just that it would be soo much better with nice enginesounds.

That is awesome! GT5 should have car sounds like this, I would play just to hear that sound. Is it because its on a PC? We can't get sound like this on the PS3?

I don´t think it is a hardware thing. But in Rfactor you often have very dedicated modders that tweak one single car so long until they get it just right.

Well, and modders that do not put in that effort. But the above videos are a great example of what you can do if you really want to.

Enginesounds simply were not high on the priority list of PD, other things were more important. Like graphics, physics, constant 60 fps, gameplay etc.

And I can understand that. I just wish it would be different. For me it is more like Physics, Sounds, Graphics and then the rest.

I know this has been discussed to death, and there are many different exhausts makin many different noises but comeone ever heard a race vette? never heard the tranny when it passed me lol. Same for saleens or vipers.

A few weeks ago, I came up into something, that almost made me cry.

A stock Dodge Challenger R/T `70 ... interior view.... This car sounds like a 30 year old hair dryer... The exhaust sound is great, but the interior/bumper cam view sucks.

Why PD, why? I can live with limited night/wet racing, I can live with 800 ps2 cars, I barely managed to survive your stupid XP-system, also I didn`t gave the game up after I found out that there is only one Maserati... But this poor sounding Dodge Challenger R/T `70 can even make Chuck Norris crying like a 13 year old emo girl...

That car was the final blow that made me just crank up BGM. Wait til you race mod it, sweet sweet tears of disappointment.

The problem is that PD doesn't seem to believe in induction noise. Instead they mix in what appears to be just 'engine noise' which consists of belts and pulleys whirring about. Then on top of that, they make it much too loud. As a result, most cars sound like blenders from the front. I don't understand why they can't hear induction noise?

The sound itself is also modded by a modder, probably just recorded it somewhere form a video or in real life. Rfactor itself could'nt deliver such sounds aswell, infact no games have done this yet.

But modders do it on a daily basis. Lovely work indeed! :)

So when modders do such things just for "fun" (the most mods I know are free - but I know mostly mods for RPG games....) why doesn't PD pay some modders to make some grate cars sounds for their cars?

Even before you get to the point that most cars sound like vacuum cleaners, how about acknowledging that the samples themselves are looped extremely poorly. I am utterly fed up of listening to bad loops in engine noises, going 'boing-boing-boing' (but slower!) while I'm driving.

Although not the best physics, Shift sure nailed the visceral roar when in the cockpit. Maybe GT5's sound is supposed to represent what you would hear IRL, encased in a helmet with ear plugs firmly in. Maybe they have THAT nailed. Even during replays, when you would have taken them off..!

But that's NOT what gamers want!

I was at Sebring for the ALMS race last year when they started up the Jag XJ13 http://www.flickr.com/photos/24157179@N06/4578208185/in/set-72157623868087077/ (that's me in the red jacket!) with me next to it. Even WITH pro ear protectors in, it made me jump out of my skin! THAT'S what I want to feel in GT5!

Sorry, PD, but epic fail with the sound...

Has anyone else heard the almost flange-y oscillations when going very fast? The engine/exhaust sounds swirls at something like a Hz. Is that from a real phenomenon, or unintended?

No, it's a badly cross-faded loop. Same with bumps in the sound. Same with horns that suddenly drop in volume after you hold them for a second or so.

BAD sound design, pure and simple. Even if they couldn't get the RIGHT sound, it ought to have no artifacts, at least. Amateur city, IMO.

Lol, Don't ask me, surf around, modding is "illegal"

Thought as much. So it's basically a beat from two overlapping samples?

No, a cross-faded loop is a loop where the end is cross-faded into the beginning of it. If they are of unequal volume, pitch or timbre, you will hear artifacts around the boundary.
