Engine sounds. A cry for help

And move the engine sounds to the center channel where it belongs, instead of coming out of the far side of my 5.1 sound system.

I guess PD thinks that people playing on a 5.1 home theatre have their L/R speakers set 2 feet apart right in front of the screen.

One rear-engine cars, the engine sound comes from the rear speakers if running 5.1 or higher, while skids, etc come from the C/L/R speakers. (Which again is silly since my surround speakers are 10 feet away from where I'm racing). Sounds like you aren't hearing any rear speakers.

Agreed. Even if there have to be some compromises to suit a variety of systems, why not have more options for audio. Neither of the large theatre/small theatre settings (I think from memory that's what they are called..) do a good job of makin the most of a decent set-up.

I don't get how Forza can get it so right yet GT which has been around longer can get it soooo wrong!

Also people complaining about the gearbox whine...I thought that was a nice touch as a car with a straight cut gearbox will whine like that...much like a car with an aftermarket mechanical diff which clunks.

Even Forza is nowhere near as good as most PC sims, although admittedly it smashes GT5 with most cars.

Rfactor/GTL/GTRe all have excellent race car sounds. It baffles me that the nearest thing on console is Shift.

EA has always been absolutely amazing when it comes to sounds.

Shift LOOKED like racing, SOUNDED like racing, and FELT like racing.

Sadly, it didn't DRIVE like racing!

But they get that ONE point fixed in Shift 2 Unleashed, and GT5 is going to have some serious competition. Imagine... a FUN game, that drives like GT5!

This place will be an empty barn. Night racing (where the headlights are bright enough to see by, from released screenshots, anyway), FIA, Spa and Bathurst, upgraded street cars that LOOK like they've seen a track...

All it takes is decent physics, and GT5 loses the only edge it has. Wake up, PD! The barbarians are at the gates!

ya no...highly doubt people will drop gt5 and come flocking to Shift 2.

Do you even READ all the posts here? Consensus seems to be, GT5 ONLY has great physics going for it. That's enough for some. I doubt most.

But it will be a different kettle of fish if EA/SMS offer an alternative, especially one that already SOUNDS great, already has a logical, grind-free, nicely balanced upwards path through the game, especially one that already has a balanced online system with easy matchmaking, leaderboards, damage, night and day racing, one with a logical event structure, where you can't race a Veyron against a Vitz, a game that doesn't feel like it is a driving test simulator for the Dept. of Motor Vehicles, a game that, when you crash, the AI crash too, where crashing doesn't sound like hitting a bass drum in a marching band....

I bought the hype... I left Shift and got GT5 pre-ordered, and it was supposed to be the 'Ultimate' driving game. Boy, was I fooled! It's got great driving physics, and a better DFGT implementation. Period.

If EA fix Shift (and they are talking seriously about implementing a 'pro' physics mode akin to GT5), I can't honestly see who WOULDN'T want to play it. In so many ways, it is ALREADY a far better GAME than GT5. B-Spec? PLEASE! Give me a break! Grinding? Never heard of it until GT5. 300 less A-Spec events than GT4? Epic fail...

I am beginning to feel like the kid that finally says 'The Emperor has no clothes!'

While i agree i just cannot see the driving part in Shift 2 being good due to how awful it is in the first game.

I was about to disagree and say you are simplifying things too much...then I realized you are speaking the truth. I very much enjoyed shift 1, so if shift 2 can improve the actual driving (especially now that I have a quality wheel to drive with) then I can see myself putting down GT5 for a long while.

However, I think that shift's sounds were not that great. They were entirely too over-embellished. There is no reason why a stock Civic SI should have gearbox whine similar to that of a GT1 Corvette. Shift 1 also had so many bugs that it made GT5 looked mirror polished. I always thought the menus and stuff on shift were a bit strange, with that single, odd BGM track being played over and over again (the track actually being lifted directly from a video produced about a year earlier) Shift 1 was similar to the original Enthusia to me. It had all the components of a good game (or most of them) but it just wasn't quite there. Sadly there was no Enthusia 2. Hoping for the best from Shift 2. I'm glad that the NFS franchise is now in two distinct halves so that each can focus on their core ideas.

mind you GT has never been good with sounds except maybe gt2 and 1? never played them however GT4 I know has MUCH MUCH MUCH more A spec races, so much i never really touched B spec and made up for the ****** noises. Now I NEED b spec grinding (which is balls) just to fund my daily car habit. Shifts sound was amazing however only time will tell is number 2 will be anything, i wont pay for it though. I was quite confused when all i could here was whine coming from the challenger. Very very disapointed when my 69 Vette sounded like some high pitched european, not that europeans are bad however a straight piped 454 thumps hard and hits you through the chest unlike what happened here.... Also Wtf with no turbo induction sounds!! I know know its all show boy crap however if i spent 20000 on a big ass turbo to suit my car i would atleast like to here a spool instead of a supercharger oh wait no its the stock tranny. One thumbs up though my Lotus 111r sounds bearable at 9000rpm killing the lambos on Nurburgring :)
May i also add, I absolutely hate ranting and dissing GT5 however WTF PD! i took over 5 years to complete GT5, what were you doing? Physics okay, track mapping, okay They showed videos of mapping the new-at-the-time R35 GTR with a mic at the tail pipe and my impression they did that to every premium, however maybe they were just out driving the cars like the PS3 commercial? haha

I'm with you there. Nothing grinds my gears like having to diss GT5, I wanted it to be exactly what it was hyped as...

But I cut Shift no slack, I shouldn't cut GT5 any. When something is WRONG, it's wrong. Whether SMS/EA or PD/Sony are at the helm. I could care less who makes a damn game. Bunch of morons, one and all! Who runs these things? Certainly no-one who loves playing games and loves having fun racing, that's for sure!

How PD could miss the simple trick of balancing the Typical Opponents against the entered car's hp and weight is beyond belief. How SMS could leave out an entire GT5-like pro handling mode they already had ready to go, simply because EA said it was too hard for casual gamers (as if there wasn't a mode already in there for them) is equally moronic.

Now Shift's primarily arcade players have all left to go play Hot Pursuit, SMS have no excuses to not go for PD's jugular. If EA want a piece of the PD pie, now's the time, while GT5 users are reeling from the boneheaded mistakes and decisions made in its initial release. From what I read here all the time, it wouldn't take much to make them jump ship. And a GT5 like handling mode would be the first thing on the list.

Bring it ON, I say! Competition is the life-blood of innovation, something sorely lacking at PD Headquarters, I fear.

NFS shift is basically running on the rFactor engine (via GTR) so there is no reason that it can't drive as good or better than GT5. The tire physics have always been a bit strange in rFactor, but I'd say it is at least on part with GT5

as a sidenote, I find it amusing that the two major PC racing sims (GTR and iRacing) both have fairly ancient (in software terms) base engines. iRacing is essentially running the old papyrus Nascar 2003 engine and GTR runs the rFactor engine from around the same time.

That's some poor sound mixing if they have the engine revs coming out of only one side in cockpit view. They need to rethink what they did with the audio and put out a patch.

ya no...highly doubt people will drop gt5 and come flocking to Shift 2.

I might if it's good enough. If it drives more or less like a sim, I will probably play that and will go back to GT5 when I get bored.

I was at Sebring for the ALMS race last year when they started up the Jag XJ13 http://www.flickr.com/photos/24157179@N06/4578208185/in/set-72157623868087077/ (that's me in the red jacket!) with me next to it. Even WITH pro ear protectors in, it made me jump out of my skin! THAT'S what I want to feel in GT5!

Sorry, PD, but epic fail with the sound...

Yeah, I know what you mean. Have you ever visited a F1 race? Believe me, the sound is out of this world, especially the old V10 sounded so awesome.

If PD atleast managed to make some great sounding cars, I would instantly forgot all the major game flaws and just drive and drive around the ring for hours, while listening to the beautiful engine sounds.

I know if Shift 2 fixes it's driving I'll definitely get the game. I'm sure it'll support the DFGT too (on PC). If Forza 3 supported my wheel I probably wouldn't even play GT5.

No more rants about gameplay. This is a thread about sounds.

Anything else veering off the given topic will receive the mute-button treatment.

Thank you.

I'm very sensitive to poor sounds, engine sound is half the sport to me... something about a strong engine note goes straight to my bones... And I have been quite vocal about it here but after more time I'm finding that its more of an inconsistency than just all bad...

I used to think the 69 Camaro was the only great sounding car... then I found a few more... then a few bad ones and man it really stands out... so it's more inconstancy... or I've dumbed my senses down too much to know better anymore from only playing GT5...

Since my PS3 died a week ago, i've gone back to my heavily modded GTRe. The game always astonishes me when I come back to it. Fully customisable championships, fully customisable events, a huge selection of cars, from Group C to BTTC (thanks to modding community), and of course, the SOUNDS are incredible.

I just spent an hour hotlapping SPA in a Renault A110. It beats the crap out of my A110 in GT5, and not just because it's a race version, but because the sound alone was enough to keep me lapping. Compared to GT5, GTRe just has a rawness about it, that makes me love it. Don't get me wrong, i'll still get my PS fixed and come back to GT, but maybe now in such a hurry now.

Anyone who has GTRe, I urge you to install the Mazda 787B mod, and listen to the sound of this car. Amazing. And it comes from a modder, not from a massive, experienced company like PD.

Why can they not make a game like GTR for PS3? Perhaps the graphics could do with updating, but everything else is spot on. Surely the hardware is capable... I find it hard to believe there's no market for it.

Remember that the COMMUNITY makes those MODS for rFactor and they spend alot more time making it sound perfect then the devs would. ( Think budget )

If you want awesome sounds of GT cars check the Endurance mod from Enduraces:

http://www.youtube.com/user/EnduRacers#p/a/u/1/f5S6T2F17GM

http://www.youtube.com/user/EnduRacers#p/a/u/2/iCZilSxlA1Y

And yes...this mod is 50 times better then the equal cars in GT5 :P

Overall in rFactor you got 100's and 100's of MODS for thousands of cars. Some better then others but ye. F1, dedicated drift mods, cups etc. etc. GT5 dwarfs if you compare...and Rfactor coming out this year oooo yeeees :)
So as for sounds all we can hope for constant patching so the game keeps being upgraded but there is a limit to the PS3 capacities so don't think we should keeep our hopes up and just enjoy it as it is for now.

If you guys ever played it, Forza 1 had the same transmission whine issues.

Although in that video he's using the 3rd person camera and you can only get the true terribleness from the hood and bumper cam

A lot of the cars sound great in GT5, such as the Gallardo, R8, 787B, LFA, 908, R10, Z4, NASCARs etc.👍

However many cars have failed to put a good impression
-All the variants of the Muricelago sound like V10s
-Ferrari F1 cars (gearshifts, wtf?)
-FGT (ahem, a 18500rpm V12 should not sound like a 4-pot at 12000rpm)
-Ferrari 599 (okay, but sounded better in Prologue)

I was really dissapointed after I spent 1,000,000cr. on an Enzo, only to have it sound like a V8:tdown:

This is what I was expecting, the greatest sound from a street-legal car
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXhf01vnc3Y

Even this sounds better than in GT5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5h8aPT3zSw

Same with Citroen GT Road car, they could've re-used the sounds from the Ford GT, yet they use a V10 recording:ouch:

Now this:

If they include the FXX as DLC, only to have it sound like a 4-cylinder hairdryer, I'm literally going to shoot PD's sound-designer in the head:mad:

Same thing goes with the Veyron, which I hope will be premiumized and the sound updated.

GT5 is really immersive and I play it almost 8hrs a day, but these car sounds are just:yuck:. I am a freeware sound designer for Flight Simulator, GTA and various other games, and if GT5 were moddable, I would probably be spending my time releasing all these sound patches.

It sounds pretty darn good!! A lot better and more immersive than GT5 I´m afraid. I respect and enjoy what PD has created, it´s just that it would be soo much better with nice enginesounds.
