The heart of the article you posted assumes that people are not entitled to assistance. To rely on private charities is to admit that some people who have no only alienated employers, but also their community, would probably not receive much help. To accept that, you must be willing to say that these people are not entitled to any of the earnings of the rest of americans. You must be willing to say that the only way these people should receive help is through the generosity of other people. If you can't say that, if you truely believe that all of us are entitled to each other's money if we do badly enough, you will not be able to swallow what is said in that article.

For some reason that paragraph you wrote is extremely confusing,.. but I'll break it down as best as possible:
1)The heart of the article you posted assumes that people are not entitled to assistance. - That is correct,... I DO NOT believe that people are ENTITLED to assistance.
2)To accept that, you must be willing to say that these people are not entitled to any of the earnings of the rest of americans. - that is correct,.. nothing earned means nothing recieved,... unless recieved through charitable contribution.
3)You must be willing to say that the only way these people should receive help is through the generosity of other people. - yes,.. see answer to #2
Cold hearted? Maybe to some,.. but I've never had anything handed to me,.. I grew up in an upper-middle class home,.. yet was forced to get a job when I turned 14 (just as an example). And it in turn, those implied responsibilities,... made me into a responsible, dependable adult.
