Why would that be the case? Is it even plausible or just illogical speculation?
I mean, it is plausible: USB can be a door for jailbreak attacks, as it has been in the past Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo consoles. Maybe they deemed too risky to let games have a way to manage storage devices directly and chose to restrict this to the OS only.

Then they’d let us share full res images elsewhere, no? Maybe a future app that works a lot better than the Sport companion app.

Jailbreaking has been a thing since at least the GT5 days, yet this feature has been present in every single GT game since. Except for GT7, of course.

My theory is that Polyphony overlooked this or just don’t care enough to put the feature back in. The first would reveal the obvious fact that this game is incomplete (possibly rushed to meet deadlines), the second would expose them as bad developers.

They who? Polyphony* will say is up to Sony offer they the means to let you export full res raw images out of the game.

*In a perfect world, a goddamn first party GaaS developer would have a community manager addressing this sort of issue. Good luck trying to extract something about this next time Kaz wakes up and does an interview.

So your reasoning is that just because jailbreaking is a thing since GT5 they should just do nothing to prevent it? Software safety requirements evolve with time, as attack vectors and the way organisations assess vulnerabilities, and maybe this time around Sony reached the conclusion that they can't afford letting games have free access to USB media storage.

Working as a software developer myself, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that's the case: you are removing a niche feature probably used by just one game and blocking a potential safety breach in a piece of software which is crucial for the longevity of the platform. It's a no brainer, really.

And do you realise how odd your statement reads? You are saying that the feature has been always present, and now it isn't. So somehow Polyphony forgot to just copy/paste some simple piece of code to a new game? That doesn't make any sense.

Seeing the massive focus Polyphony always had with photography in its games I would be extremely shocked if they simply forgot to add the feature. And mind you I'm a heavy critic about PD shortcomings, specially when it comes to game design.

It is rather odd, but yes, you have a point. Kinda.
I have repeated this so many times, might as well one more time: why can I, who use a base PS4, take 4K images? My system doesn’t support it, nor does my TV.

Well, the tech reason is that the piece of software that runs the game is capable of running at such high resolutions, as you see in the PS5 where it runs native 4K all the time. So what happens is, when you take a picture, you ask the software to output that specific frame at its highest resolution possible, and the console does that and saves that frame into a PNG file.

That's probably why the rendering proccess takes a few seconds. There is no trivial code running here.

When you decide to open that captured picture, the game probably downscales it to Full HD, so everything works seamlessly. Notice that at no point your console is actually rendering anything in 4K to your screen. Actually, I would hazard a guess that the base PS4 is capable of running 4K synthesized* images, just not in motion, not in real time.

Basically like a mundane laptop from 5 years ago, with a simple Intel integrated GPU, can output to 4K resolution. It just isn't really capable of doing that running all the complex graphics simulations of a game, so you won't be running Forza Horizon 5 on 4K on that machine, but could very well make 4K photos out of a potato PC running the game at low settings.

* What I mean by synthesized is images rendered in real time by the GPU, like in a game, a new frame each 16 ms (so 60 FPS, in GT7's case). Also keep in mind that the base PS4 has HDMI 1.4b which specs clearly states 4K 30FPS output as a maximum (plus, the PS4 base has such good HDMI 1.4b interface that it's able to output HDR content, even in 1080p).

But why do something now instead of years ago? Your reasoning feels too optimistic, it is based on the assumption that we’re dealing with developers that are on top of everything when you see they haven’t even been able to make a complete campaign mode for a racing game title that is part of a franchise that has existed since 1997.

Perhaps my reasoning doesn’t make sense to you, but it feels very plausible to me. Seeing the lack of polish, the problems with the servers, the messy online mode, the inconsistent implementation of dynamic weather (for example, Dragon Trail only has it for Gardens, not Seaside), the countless bugs that were present in the first two weeks, etc makes me feel like the lack of this feature can be explained exactly like most problems with the game can be explained: this is an unfinished game that was rushed to meet an unordinary release date for a GT game.

Perhaps a better question is, why could you take 4K resolution photos in GT6, a PS3 exclusive?

(apologies for the double post)

Won't be going in circles with this with you, I already explained to you that software, threat assessment and the craft of the hacking community are always evolving and you are always reacting to that. One of my latest tasks at work was helping in a complete overhaul of some nasty legacy piece of code that was state of the art just a few years ago and was now proved to be vulnerable by some consultants hired by my employer to do just that: find the weak spots. And boy they did that.

I understand your point, but not all developers are competent. Look at Rockstar Games, GTA V’s online servers are from what I’ve heard easily hackable, to the point that the IP addresses of gamers are not securely protected and ridiculously easy to access. And I think both of us are aware of just how big Rockstar is, a gaming company that should know how to create secure servers, given that GTA Online has been out for close to a decade.

Perhaps Polyphony are more competent, perhaps them directly being owned by Sony gives them an edge in that area, or maybe GT7 really is that incomplete. I can’t say for sure, and neither can you.

Have a nice day!

usb import does not get rid of the legal text , when i went to costco to have mine printed they had to crop that **** out.

Also I understand us PS4 users are upset we can't export to USB but on ps5 and ps4 pro the PNG captures are in 4k non compressed ..

I export in the following manner.

The photos appear on my phones PSApp
I then export them and then use dropbox to sync them so I can upload from PC.

I wish any photo would instantly save to the PS4/PS5s media section just like the GT5 and GT6 did on the PS3.
Heck PD, if smart could do what GT4 did.
Allow saving directly to USB.

I didn't know that actually. If it's true then the whole issue has gone away for me, because that works fine for me.

If I want any more detail I zoom in on my photos and capture them at full zoom using the Share function, then I stitch them together in Photoshop.

Because GT7 outputs the photos at a resolution higher than 4K zooming in at the capture stage means you don't lose any quality, but if you capture without zooming in the PlayStation just captures whatever is on the screen at 4K. The resulting images are enormous - landscape images are around 7660x4230 rather than 3840x2160.

Portrait photos are even better using this method because the PlayStation Share function saves them as a small portrait photo in the middle of a 4K landscape image which is super frustrating.

The difference is most clearly demonstrated when adjusting both images to the same scale:

Wow , never knew GT rendered beyond 4k.. What is the point if you can't export it !

I'm just assuming there since you can zoom in on any photos you've taken without losing any quality. I could be wrong, it may just render to 4K and upscale or something. I'm not aware of what the resolution of the full size image is when you press X and it renders the photo but stitched images are close to 8K in size with no loss of quality.

I'll post some full size images when I'm back at my PC tomorrow.

I did this one more time myself. The difference is amazing. A really good way if you’re patient! And the legal text + watermark doesn’t need to be cropped out. I love it.

My question is: Is there any way to zoom in on a photo after it's been saved? I'm on a PS4, and when I'm looking at my pictures in Showcase, there is no zoom that I can find as I preview an image. When I look at it in Capture Gallery, the Enlarge button (square) doesn't work, and the zoom icon on the Options menu is grayed out. Like I said in my post with the Pig at Flugplatz, the only place I can zoom in and full-res pieces of an image is while I'm in the camera screen, and preview it there.

Is there any free alternative to Photoshop that supports an easy automatic photo stitch like this?
I've used Paint.net to do it manually before, it takes some time but it's pretty easy to do providing you zoom in enough. I usually use 9 full zoom photos for it.

I'm on PS5 so it may be different but I usually zoom in after the photo is finished rendering, I haven't tried it at any other point.
