Fanatec GT3RS V2 Clubsport pedal problem

Upgraded to firmware 681 and did some testing. I changed my FF settings to 80 on the wheel and left it at 10 in GT5. The old firmware, when I checked it I never saw the "on/off" in regards to the fan. The 681 firmware lets me see it now.

It looks like the firmware helped a lot, BUT the issue is still there on extended runs (granted this could be simply the result of lowering the FF). I started with a hour at High Speed Ring, no issues. Then spent the next hour at the Ring which would be a aggressive test on the FF.

Last time I did this test, the wheel died within 2-3 laps. Now I can get almost 8-9 laps before I quit on me. It's a improvement, but were not out of the woods yet.

I had already unscrewed the cover, but had left it on to test the firmware in a isolated test. As soon as it failed I removed the cover and reset the wheel. Normally the wheel would fail within 3-4 min again, but I just did another 4 laps (9min per) without another failure.

My opinion? It can't breathe with the cover on, way too little airflow, which is what many people have found to be the issue with the GT3RS and GT2 wheels. To keep the cover on, I feel using a fan pointed at the vents should help fix the problem. Is this acceptable? No...... but it will have to do. On the other hand I can view it as "wind" blowing at me lol.

I'll test the fan idea tomorrow.

Just buy a cheap little desk fan and point it at the vent. The fans I am talking about are maybe 4 inches across the blades and have a little clip so you can attach it to stuff.

The other option is to just run it with the cover off all the time. My friend used to do this before getting a new wheel. His had the same problem. Be careful doing this though as stray light can play havoc with the wheel position sensor.

If you want, I would take the cover off then unscrew the little vent screens and remove them. Then put the cover back on like that.

That's a good idea, I'll try that if the fan alone doesn't fix the issue.

If the fan/vent solves the issue, it's not ideal but worth it for a great setup.

Strangely I see no reference by you attempting to obtain service, but I will leave that alone along with your argument regarding ebay purchase as a non-factor regarding your posted issue....

....but this info might be of use to you:

Do a search on Amazon for USB fans, they have some nice ones for not much like this 80mm fan.

If you are not concerned with warranty service open the case, and as MrBasher suggested, either remove the airflow-constricting vents (the CSR vents are much better in this regard)...

...or make it breathe easier by making grills that have more open mesh, which is readily available at most hardware, home improvement or even craft shops.

Mount the USB fan to the top of your case, just above one of the vents (internal exhaust fan is under right vent for your ref.), or go radical with a hole saw for max forced air in which case you can even go 120mm in fan size and mount it down lower as in the below pic.

The USB-powered route means that you will either need a powered hub or device, or a dedicated charger like the ones used for cell phones. Going USB means that you will not have to fiddle with internal wiring.

For your reference, once upon a time circa 2010, Team ARC offered a FANA-E mod for the first gen. GT3 RS, among other things it also included this nifty cooling fan install into the case:

The ARC mod looks pretty good, though I might just grab a small external fan for now.

I haven't contacted Fanatec for service yet. The reason? For this specific problem, I have yet to find anyone on any forum that had it resolved by Fanatec, all of them either returned the wheel, started using a fan or still use it as is hoping for a solution from Fanatec. In terms of Fanatecs responses on the forums/emails to these users? They blamed the USB ports on the slim, or directed everyone to the manual where it says not to use the wheel for more than a hour.

Sorry but based on my research I would just be spinning my wheels with them.

Thanks for the link to the fans though, I'll look into those depending on how the small external fan works.

Update. Did a 1.5hr race with the cover off and a fan pointed at the wheel. FF set at 70. No issues.

Good to hear. On the GT2/GT3 RS I always have in-game FFB set 50 to 60%, wheel at 100%. GT2/GT3 wheels are happiest when kept cool.

The vents are a big constrictor, that's a lot of the reason the CSR runs so much cooler, the airflow on the mesh is much better (I have all 3 wheels here).

Cannot understand why the Porsche wheels were never fitted with same vents, unless it has something to do with the Porsche license and imposed design restrictions (some companies can be very particular).

Yeah it's pretty crazy that they didn't think the ventilation would be a issue.

Now I need to test with the cover on and a fan nearby. Last time it failed I had the cover on, but not screwed on, so I removed it and the heat sink was pretty hot. Now with cover off and fan, it's cold after 1.5hrs. So we have isolated the issue as overheating. It's retarded, but now we know.

What ticks me off, is that it cost me the championship in my current league :(
