Ferrari 458 Italia w/ Sports Hard tires is a nightmare?

I've been using the (bone stock) Ferrari 458 Italia for the Supercar Festival. After a fair bit of practice, the best lap times on Eifel (Circtuit) that I could manage consistently were in the 1:18:xx range. By simply changing from Sports Hard to Sports Soft tires, I dropped to consistent 1:12:xx. Six seconds per lap, just from tires, and not even racing tires mind you, just from Sports Hard to Sports Soft. This is the difference between a 4th-6th place finish and winning!

So a few questions:

1.) Is this normal? I mean, I know tires are a very effective upgrade, but a consistent six seconds per lap going from Sports Hard to Sports Soft?

2.) Does anyone actually like the way the 458 Italia performs with Sports Hard tires? I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a great driver, but I found the car to be a horrible mess of understeer in its stock configuration. It's not great with Sports Hard tires, IMO, but it's vastly improved.

3.) Given that I experience great amounts of understeer with the Sports Hard tires, what changes do you think I could make to my driving to improve my lap times?

*I used ABS at 1, TC at 3, SRF on, ASM off, using a DS3 controller.

Thanks for your comments,

The lighter and more powerful the car, the more time is gained by SS tires.
Example: On SH's, the GT-R will beat an ACR on Tsukuba, on SS's, the Viper will run faster.
I suspect a 458 should run as fast or faster, and Eifel is a tight circuit.

Tires matter even more at Tokyo, because even on SS's, you can't take any high-speed turn at full throttle, so you constantly gain on SS's.

This makes a lot of sense to me. A few of the places on Eifel where I could really visibly see myself falling back were on the two high-speed right-hand sweepers. With the sports soft tires, I could (or could just about) stay flat out, whereas with sports hard, I was having to constantly modulate to stay anywhere near a decent line. Thanks!

1.) Yup, it's quite normal. Since the car has more grip you'll have better speed during cornering and trough straight lines and you'll also feel it more stable which will give you a feeling of confidence so you can push it to the limit even more.

2.) It requires a bit of finesse, and honestly I prefer the 430, but the 458 once you get the hang of it it's superb. Sure, you need to be delicate and some times that means slow (I, for once, can't be both über delicate and fast at the same time) but it feels awesome driving the car as it's supposed to be driven.

3.) I'd say brake even more at the corner entry. Also, try to turn the car a bit with the throttle during the turn. But what I really reccomend you is getting a wheel!!! :dopey:. Don't worry if you're not a good driver, it's always a matter of practice. One advice I give you is trying to drive without SRF, because you'll forget how to drive once you're out of it (It happened to me in GT5:P with the ASM, I couldn't drive without it and when I didn't had it I was a mess).

If you want a good help about how to improve your driving technique , here is a very good PDF file about this with a lot of details.
There is no good tune that will help you more than thoses basics skills.

This is a hard area in which to train one's self. I'll need to practice it more. Thank you.

Actually, I have a driving force pro, but sadly, I don't always get it out, as the wife doesn't always take kindly to it in the family room.

I'd like to do more experiments without SRF. I've tried a few times, but just haven't stuck with it. I dislike it, because it's an artificial aid with no real-life analog (like ABS, TC, or ASM), but at the same time, I find the game challenging with it on, so turning it off would only serve to make the game more challenging. I'll have to give it some consideration.

Thanks for your comments :)

Ah yes, the best money you can spend on your car is driver's school, right? Thanks for the link. I've skimmed this PDF once before, and I have a copy of Going Faster on my bookshelf. The PDF is a nice summary though, I should review it once again.

Thanks,

Sports Softs are more realistic for that car. More of a softer compound tire does wonders for this car. It can be spec'd with Michelin Pilot Super Sports in real life, and it performs well.

I can't imagine this car coming from a dealership with anything less than the softest summer compounds out there. It seems odd to me that it comes with sports hards. What exactly is softer that isn't a race tire? But then I haven't paid enough attention to see if any car comes from the dealership with sports soft tires.

The tuner cars (Spoon, Mine's, etc) come with sports softs, but I've not seen any road car use better than sports hards from the dealership.

The 458 is a GREAT car. The ABSOLUTE best in Ferraris stable. Don't let what it does on SH tires turn you off to it.

Before I tried the sports soft tires, I almost wrote this car off. After running with sports soft tires, I was so impressed at the improvement that I went and tried the car with racing soft tires. Wow, the car really comes to life with racing rubber on it! The large impact of the tire change is what surprised me so much; I'd seen so many posts from people that love the 458, but I'm guessing that they're not using it in its stock form. :) With racing softs (and to a lesser extend sports softs), the 458 Italia is very enjoyable to drive. It does a good job of balancing stability with maneuverability.
