FF Rally Challenge - Swiss Alps

I've noticed that rally spot races have been rather lacking as of late, so I figured I'd give one a shot just for fun. :)

Okay, here's the setup:

  • Any NON-RALLY front wheel drive car that can be fitted with dirt tires may be entered.
  • Modifications are unlimited, and may be performed at your discretion. (No hybrids, though!)
  • Submit your best lap time at Swiss Alps, no limit of the number of laps you may run. Clean laps only (mowing the grass is okay, hitting the walls is not).
  • To make it fair for the less powerful cars, standings will be divided into Group B (150 HP or less) and Group A (over 150 HP) categories.
  • You can submit as many times as you like, with as many cars as you like, in either category.

When posting your times, please include what car you drove and its HP level so i know where to list it. Keep in mind that the same car can be entered into both categories as well, provided it matches the HP reqs.

Any and all suggestions are welcome, and hopefully this will generate some interest. :)

GROUP B STANDINGS:
Code:
1. Delray Sandusk (Daihatsu Mira TR-XX, 121HP) 1'35.342
2. Rossell (VW Lupo Cup Car, 140HP) 1'35.801
3. Delray Sandusk (Daihatsu Mira TR-XX, 121HP) 1'36.722

GROUP A STANDINGS:
Code:
1. Rossell (VW New Beetle, 390HP) 1'26.318
2. Delray Sandusk (Mini Cooper 1.3i, 178HP) 1'29.449

Rally umm I'm pretty good at rally, not many people actually like the rally part of the game but I do so I will see as soon as I get chance ;)

Time for the steering wheel for here :D :burnout:

I know the rally portion is less popular, but I would like to think folks are willing to try something other than just "take your fastest car to Midfield", which is what a lot of spot races seem to have become as of late.

I agree :) I know of someone else who like to Rally too, I'll see if I can get him involved he's very good at it too ;)

The only reason I chose Midfield was because it was my first Spot Race and it was the first track to creep up.

Rossell: Standings are updated, I'll see about trying to better you this afternoon. ;) Admittedly those times were pretty sloppy, but it was late and I wanted to have something up for folks to try and beat. And I wasn't trying to accuse anyone with my comment, I was just trying to say that most spot races seem to be too similar as of late.

meme: Dude, if you aren't even going to follow the rules then don't bother posting times, okay?

Cheers Delray. I bought and tuned these cars up and did not save them so I'm glad you kept the horsepower ratings intact. Cheers. I won't have another stab for a while, when I get time dude.

Cheers, I'm glad to see someones making the effort of diversity...

Thanks Rossell! I decided to record the HP levels so that we could see how much of a difference it would make in times, like Group B now shows (I knew that little shoebox had some go-power left in it!)

I plan on making this my new pet project, so it'll still be here when you decide to try again. :)

Hoping this is still active...I've run enough GT3 for a bit (87% or so). I've only got 5 series race left to run to hit 100%.

I need a bit of a break, so I'm running some OLR to catch up.

This one looks like it has some serious fun potential.

AO

Yeah, me too! I've got a couple of likely candidates to run, if I can put dirt tires on them...

PS - AO, I'm following you around, I guess.

Could Delray please come from the grave and realise that I have a result that beats his Group B candy ass

Delray isn't online too frequently. He tends to come on, make a pass, and go off again.
He'll get back to you I'm sure.

OK, here are my two entries so far, after about 5 laps in each car:

Gruppo A: Honda Integra Type :r: (320 hp)
1':27.322"

Gruppo B: Daihatsu Mira (120 hp)
1':37.459"

I've got a big question, though - how do you equip dirt tires? These runs were made on medium slicks - I think.

For both of these cars, it let me buy dirt tires, and deducted 22,000 credits per car. But when I went to the Run & Settings screen, Swiss Alps track, the cars both still had the slick tires listed, and there were no dirt tires to equip.

How can you tell which cars can have dirt tires? How can you tell if they are on the car?

Neon_Duke:

I posed this question once before many moons ago. The dirt tires are an Automatic install. No need to mount them. And...No need to change them, as they are the only acceptable tire for use on the rally tracks.

Here was my run.

Now as I understood the challenge (I only attacked the Group B class) Was that any mods are available, run on an FF car, but HP is limited to less than 150.

I managed a 1'34.346 in a heavily modded Toyota VItz RS 1.5 (Pink, if you're wondering) that was pushing 143 HP.

Began the settings tweaking, and actually found a better line. Continue with the settings until I can’t improve.

Final settings:
Springs: 11.9/10.9
Ride Height: 117/107
Shock Bound: 6/6
Shock rebound: 6/7
Camber: 1.1/3.0
Toe: 1.5/-1.5
Stabilizers: 5/4
Brakes: 8/11
Auto setting: level: Level 21
Final drive: 4.650
ASM; TCS = 0

At these settings I’m running a 1’34.346, with another 0.8XX still in it. Current spot times are 21.175; 43.953; 1’06.472 and finishing it off with a 1’34.346. So I think a realistic high 1'33 is available.

As another aside, I am going to see what dropping the chip, and adding the Muffler does to the HP. Also the other combination of Breathign systems might land me closer to the 150hp mark.

I found that I took my foot off full throttle twice in the entire track. It was at the tight left-right turn after the second time marker, and again for the very tight right-left at the end of the back straight (Before the final big right hander).

NTSC Sharkport available for upload, for verification.

Now time for Group A...

AO

Thanks, AO. I wasn't sure, since the Tires screen still said I had Medium Slicks mounted. So if you can't put dirt tires on the car. it just won't let you buy them?

I actually didn't spend any time adjusting the cars. For the ITR I can definitely do better by adding the race suspension and dinking with the ride height and spring rates. It could use some help because it liked to get big air on the couple of whoopsies in this track.

I also plan on trying my Pink Vitz which I thought would be a natural considering its balanced handling. The Mira was just like driving a bus - I hardly had to lift at all, and it never really slid; I just tried to drive the shortest line possible.

Correct DUke: It just won't let you buy them.

I took a good run at the Group A challenge last night. Threw 1.5 hours at it and tried out a few different cars. FIrst, I hopped the Vitz all the way up. Made a pretty good run. I think it was in the 1'24 range.

I went back and looked at high HP FF cars that I had. After consulting a few spec sheets, i found the Civic Type R fully modded to 438 HP had a very nice power to weight ratio.

Jumped in and gave it a good haul around the tracks. I had a tough time combatting the uindersteer, but figuring a 400+ hp FF car on dirt, It was a given factor.

Settings:
Springs: 15.5/14.4
Ride Height: 89/89
Shock Bound: 3/3
Shock rebound: 3/4
Camber: 1.0/3.7
Toe: 2.0/-1.0
Stabilizers: 7/4
Brakes: 8/24
Auto setting: level: Level 26
Final drive: 4.650
ASM; TCS = 0

After an hour or so of laps, I posted a 1'20.510.

My checkpoint times are 16.573; 36.352; 55.589.

I'm also certain that there is another secon dhiding in the first leg, and another half second in the last corner.

If anyone can beat my posted time, I may have to go back to look for that extra time.

Side Notes:

I dropped the Muffler and Chip from the VItz, and added the Stage 1 NA. This settled me at 146 hp. 3 more than my previous run. More time can come off that one as well.

I tried the Group A in a fully modded ITR, and it simply had too much weight to convince the suspension to counter-act the massive understeer. I managed a very very sloppy 1'20.521

AO

Hello,
As I'm not that good at Rally races either, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me more about how to set up the rally cars? Or is there a thread here at the Planet that shows or tells others about different settings for the Rally cars? If anyone can help me, I sure would appreciate it.
If anyone can help me with an addy or tell me how to get to a thread here at the Planet on settings on a rally car, please send
your message or an address for a rally tuning thread, send to

Thanks,
Daddy Gary

Gary - welcome aboard GTP! Nice to see new members who are interested in more than just getting the most horsepower possible out of a car.

In this particular challenge, you'd want a very lightweight car, with fairly high ride height and fairly soft springs and stabilizers. Also, you would want the rear somewhat stiffer than the front on most settings, to keep the weight on the front for better traction. This will help the car understeer less and rotate better.

Good luck! I've definitely got to do some tuning though I don't have the wads of free time to throw at the project that Der Alta seems to...
:smilewink

Welll...It seems that I cleaned up in here. None of the other interested parties giving it a shot?

Where do I get my crown and the hot chicks to hold my trophy?

Champagne!!!??

I guess I'll go blow a few doughnuts out on the starting line.

:stomp:
