Actually, Polyphony started this fictional car trend, so they should pull it to another, more professional and serious level. As Tenacious D has said...Because GT isn't pCars , just because they decided to go that route doesn't mean GT has to.
... they should start by hiring artists who can create some beautiful liveries for cars that are trying to imitate model of certain real-life event, such as BTCC for instance. The GoodYear Mazda 6 @JASON_ROCKS1998 has posted above was a good idea, but lack of decent artists and abilities to change color or the number tarnished the concept. They need to hire a couple of artists skilled in livery design to make the skins for these cars.
Let's not forget that real car with fictional livery isn't the same as fictional car with fictional livery (even though I placed them both under 'fictional'). The former will always be popular, especially if performance of such car is perfectly imitating regulations of the racing event the car is trying to imitate.Lots of GT500/300 rooms, tons of Nascar rooms, quite a number of LMP rooms, a smattering of DTM rooms etc. Race mod rooms almost non-existant. Racing a bunch of cars within a series will always be more popular than racing a bunch of fantasy cars because most people are drawn to the game to attempt to recreate the real world in some way.
The latter vehicles are not going to be very popular - personally, I would use them only to fill the holes if Polyphony fails to deliver enough cars of the event they want to bring to the game. However, in that case such cars must be professionally modeled, otherwise they are useless.
With that being said, if we get real DTM car with fictional livery, it will be popular, but fictional car made to replicate usual DTM car won't - unless it is perfectly modeled. I believe we all remember the FTO LM Edition from GT1/2/3, which was among the most popular racing cars of that time.
