What kind of race cars would you prefer for GT7?

Because GT isn't pCars , just because they decided to go that route doesn't mean GT has to.
Actually, Polyphony started this fictional car trend, so they should pull it to another, more professional and serious level. As Tenacious D has said...

They need to hire a couple of artists skilled in livery design to make the skins for these cars.
... they should start by hiring artists who can create some beautiful liveries for cars that are trying to imitate model of certain real-life event, such as BTCC for instance. The GoodYear Mazda 6 @JASON_ROCKS1998 has posted above was a good idea, but lack of decent artists and abilities to change color or the number tarnished the concept.

Lots of GT500/300 rooms, tons of Nascar rooms, quite a number of LMP rooms, a smattering of DTM rooms etc. Race mod rooms almost non-existant. Racing a bunch of cars within a series will always be more popular than racing a bunch of fantasy cars because most people are drawn to the game to attempt to recreate the real world in some way.
Let's not forget that real car with fictional livery isn't the same as fictional car with fictional livery (even though I placed them both under 'fictional'). The former will always be popular, especially if performance of such car is perfectly imitating regulations of the racing event the car is trying to imitate.
The latter vehicles are not going to be very popular - personally, I would use them only to fill the holes if Polyphony fails to deliver enough cars of the event they want to bring to the game. However, in that case such cars must be professionally modeled, otherwise they are useless.

With that being said, if we get real DTM car with fictional livery, it will be popular, but fictional car made to replicate usual DTM car won't - unless it is perfectly modeled. I believe we all remember the FTO LM Edition from GT1/2/3, which was among the most popular racing cars of that time.

I raced thousands of races online in GT5 and GT6 and race mod cars were probably the least popular of all cars above 400PP. Even with a race mod and livery editor, people would still prefer real cars to fantasy cars any day. Lots of GT500/300 rooms, tons of Nascar rooms, quite a number of LMP rooms, a smattering of DTM rooms etc. Race mod rooms almost non-existant. 1. Race Mod is practically non-existent in GT5, and I would hardly call that "paint an area" deal we got in that game as a Livery Editor. In GT6, we got neither.

2. In "that other game" which you bring up when it's convenient, and dissuade mentioning when it isn't, the race modded cars (cars with racing tuned parts, weight reduction and custom user liveries) are extremely popular, and I dare say, when I raced online in it, the great majority of cars were not stock race cars. In those games (Forza 4 and above) in which you could paint over the liveries of actual race cars, almost all cars had custom liveries. And most were quite nice.

3. In the current poll, it seems popular opinion is swinging towards both options. I think accommodating that shouldn't be a problem for anyone. Purists who want only established racing machines could exclude custom Race Mod cars and custom liveries, and the rest could have what they want.

Licenced cars aren't that necessary IMO.

I mean, do we really need this:

When we already have this:

But, then we have the Falken GT-R and the R34 TC. Could have given us a Premium Falken GT-R instead.

@Matej, the orange Opel Vectra from TOCA you posted was actually a real car that took part in German STW, I think. ;)

Only authentic for me. Driving a McLaren MP4/4 without the Marlboro livery or a Lancia Delta rally car without the Martini livery just isn't the same.

>implying the original teams never run censored versions of the livery when they are racing in countries with tobacco/alcohol advertising regulations

Have a quick look on the 97T's second color option, and compare it with this:
Senna_Brands_1986.jpg

(This is the 98T, but the second color option on the 97T is exactly the same as this one)

I chose Only Authentic. The previous GT's did just fine with real race cars.

>implying previous GT games don't have enough fictional race cars

Both of you need to research again before posting.

Implying what? You see the "I" in my quote? For me, as this thread is asking what I or You prefer. To ME, previous Gran Turismos did just fine with Authentic race cars. See, GT1 for the GT300 AE86, see GT2 for Toyota GT-ONE, GT3 for Super GT500, GT4 McLaren F1 GTR, GT5 for the Schulze R35. Why do I have to research when I know what are in those games? I can roll my eyes as well.

Ouch, my mistake, thanks. I have replaced the cars with different models, I'm sure those didn't compete in real-life.

Big problem with fictional cars in latest GT games is that they don't come in several liveries or colors like older one used to. Given that all of them are standard cars, Polyphony would probably have to upgrade them to premium and then remodel the liveries - I doubt the same can be achieved with PS2-quality models on this new hardware.

for me only authentic race cars with real specifications (different for every series in which they race) and with many real liveries where possible and/or with many censored/fictional/fantasy liveries when they can't use the real ones for licensing issues.

and the different liveries should not be counted as a different car in the total number of cars

I voted for authentic race cars.
As for liveries, I think the Base Model idea in GT6 is nice, maybe PD could include only base models for all real race cars, that should save time & money since PD wouldn't have to license & recreate the liveries in game. Or even better, include base models only + livery editor, and the community will create & share all the liveries one can think of for free.

I hope you would support a good Race Mod system with a Livery Editor, which like that dreaded Forza, allows the user to make just about every car in the game into a racing machine.

The reason I keep harping on this is because most decent cars in the world have been turned into racing machines, and it would be superb if as in GT2, Race Mod could be done to convert just about every car in the game into race cars. Most of them were authentic(al), though there were a few fantasy racers in there too, and all were a blast.

If we get our community features we've been begging for since GT5, with GT6's promised Club and League Builder tools - and hopefully an Event Maker to go with it and the Course Maker, then people can define their own leagues, including cars. I think this would put Gran Turismo more over the top in cool factor than any other game.

Well.... nothing can be race modded currently, but they definitely should. Ferrari, Porsche (I'm fine with RUF), Aston Martin, Jaguar, BMW, TVR... Lord have mercy, there are a ton of racing machines which really should find a home in Gran Turismo.
