New McLaren breaks cover
Raikkonen christens new car in the wet at Silverstone

McLaren's updated MP4-19, the car with which the team hopes to turnaround its Formula 1 fortunes, broke cover at Silverstone this morning (Tuesday) when it was shaken down by Kimi Raikkonen in wet conditions.

The new car – dubbed the MP4-19B – has a re-shaped monocoque and revised bodywork and is ready for the track having passed all the mandatory FIA crash tests. Following the disaster of the MP4-18, which failed to pass the crucial tests, ticks in the boxes this time round has been a welcome relief to the struggling team.

The car features a revised nose, despite keeping its low sharply-pointed characteristics from the MP4-19. The most significant revisions appear at the rear of the car with aero adaptations similar to Ferrari's F2004 while the engine cover is more in line with the mould of the Renault R24.

It is hoped the car will make its race debut at the German GP on July 24 and technical director Adrian Newey has revealed it shows all the signs of being a vast improvement on its predecessor.

“In terms of lap times the simulation says the benefits should be significant, but I would rather not go further than that at the moment,” he said. “It's an updated car so virtually all the mechanical parts are the same, but the bodywork is heavily updated.”

Full story to follow.

OK so here it is!

The chassis between front and rear wheels looks a lot higher off the ground then before. Maybe an opitcal illusion though

I thought that, too. But look real closely at the images. The MP4-19 image has heavy shadowing around the bottom. Which gives off the illusion that the bottom is closer to the ground. The exact opposite is happening with the MP4-19b shot.

The biggest difference I can see are the shape of the side pods. Everything else looks relatively the same. Though supposedly the front wing and nose cone are different in the 19b.

That and the higher/longer engine cover... I saw another picture of the rear of the car where the exhausts also looked a bit different... but with all the aerodynamic changes, wasn't their main problem with the engine, which according to DC, is the same???

Improving the aero WON'T cure the engine troubles.

I think they are going somewhat in the right direction......but, if they can't solve their 'grenading' engine dilema by then......well, let's just say that BAR and Renault are going to knock McLaren further down by the end of the year if this happens.

This is entirly speculation but could it possibly be raised a bit due to the wet?

Excactly what I was thinking. Also, the old picture seems to be taken a millisecond before a weight transfer into a right turn. (weight is on the right side in the picture)

Hmmm... so it will go a bit faster for ten laps but still break down!!

Which came 4th in the second session...

Longer engine cover, rear cowling which steals a bit from the design of the F2004, there are changes, the testing pace reflects that. Reliability is all we want, and if the engine is no longer as badly stressed by the chassis as it apparently has been, then that will flow.

That car seems to have very little advertising on it..

That should make it a bit faster then :dopey:

:) McLaren have just proven they are not a lost cause and IMO they will be back with a vengance next year after completeing this season with a very respectable end to their season...
5th and 6th in Canada 👍

yes, although i dont go much on mclaren, im glad to see them actually finish both cars. but i cant wait for the 19b.

and again, im not a mclaren fan, but does anyone miss the hakkinen vs schumacher battles? i do. :(

Villeneuve Schumacher was more interesting. I also find it interesting Button has now scored more points this season with BAR than Villeneuve did in his entire 5 year career.

The cars lacked advertising at Canada because of laws prohibiting Tobacco sponsorship, which always means the cars are somewhat bland looking and 'empty'. It's also a stumbling point to keeping Canada on the calendar, but they rallied strongly this year, which will hopefully help.

McLaren may yet be a force next year but Montoya will take some settling in.

:lol:That's very interesting. Hopefully Button and Sato will get some REALLY good points in America!

I believe Montoya has a very different driving style and it took Williams quite a while to get his settings right. Hopefully McLaren can get there act together over winter and Montoya's ready for action in 05!

just because u want points for fantasy f1 lol.

and i dont think JPM will be settled in well next year. i think hell run a pretty average season but im guessing hell start settling in nearer to the end.

Shhh, that's not the only reason either!

No doubt that's what will happen but I hope he gets settled in nice and quickly.
