Flash your lights to signal an overtake - yay or nay?

A few days back on Interlagos, I started 4th and got the punt into T1. Now coming back from 9th, the very first guy I had to deal with was being aggressively defensive. I went the whole lap stuck behind him, I was faster everywhere. I went to pass easily on the main straight going into lap 2. For whatever reason, I tried to flash my lights. I accidentally paused the game, (T300 wheel) fumbled trying to un-pause and went off in T1 again. I never caught that guy.

I have the flashers mapped to r2 on my t150, which is the closed button to my right thumb. The only time I use it is when I'm coming up on a lap car, when I come up on a slow car during qualifying, or if I'm extremely faster than the car in front.
I'll move out of the way if I'm being lapped without question, and I strive to stay out of the way during warm up and cool down laps during qualifying.

I was thinking of writing this just the other night. I don’t use it and usually ignore it if you are using it.

I can see if you are faster than me or just being annoying. I get great pleasure when someone is close to me flashing their lights and I start to pull away which is the case probably 75% of the time.

If you are faster and it’s say lap 2 I may let you by just to follow see your line pressure you into a mistake or see you pull away. All while I am not flashing.

Don’t be a flasher. LOL

I saw this for the first time today during the MX-5 one make. Person behind was much faster, and I interpreted his actions as "get out of the way". This irked me quite a bit, I was almost half tempted to slam the brakes on.

The only time I expect to see such a thing in racing is during endurance races when obviously faster LMP1 coming up to lap the GTs and wish to make the process as benefical as possible for both parties. There's no need for it in a single category race (or one make!).

I don't even pay attention to it, most of the time I think it's just people pressing down too hard on the thumb stick when they steer.

I literally never understand how players press it that hard... my cousin does it all the time and I don’t get it. My thumb is applying almost no pressure at all to the stick when I turn. You have to be very very light on it to prevent oversteering.

I do it all the time mid-corner because of pressing to hard on the thumbstick. If I've flashed you non-stop during a race, I apologise haha

Very evident in yesterday's Bathurst night race

For myself, I blame years of Call of Duty. In COD I have L3 pressed down 98% of the time, in order to sprint. That and the fact that in an intense race I tend to have a death grip on the controller without realizing it, until I have to pry my aching hand off the controller after the race. I can't hold the controller lightly and maintain consistent control. It needs to be very tightly held to have the subtle left or right movements. Often that means my thumb is pressed down a bit too hard on the top of the stick. Flash, Flash, Flash.

Some races ago, one guy behind me were flashing me from the start to the end. Non stop.

I have no idea how it is possible to flash that many times. I think he did it to make me miss a braking point or something, but it did not work.

Flashing would be fine for multi-class racing. Adds to the excitement in close racing.
In (V8)Supercars, a faster driver and/or for intimidation purposes, just leave the lights on.

In qualifying, headlights on, means a driver is on a fast lap. So, it's on the cars cruising around, to be aware.

How many flashes is it set up for? Super GT used to have about 5-7 flashes per cycle.

If that was on Mt. Panorama it probably was me, I just thought it was cool lighting up the track and was having fun with it. Don't do that anymore.

I think it might be to do with how you hold your thumb on the stick... if you're right on the side you're probably not going to do it, but if your thumb sits more on top then more likely to press down hard on it when in some high pressure turns. I know my hands tense up quite a bit when I'm in traffic.

I always flash the lights when im overtaking, or the say that im here, and I use it to say sorry for a bump or somthing, and I flash the lights when I get angry at the person infront of me, then I rage flash the lights haha,

So I've seen this a couple of times online. The driver behind travels at a higher pace and feels like you should either move out of his way or at least prepare for his overtake attempt.

I thought this was something that only existed in video game racing, but apparently it's standard procedure for many endurance drivers in real life. Like the LMP drivers shown in the clip below at 2:29.

How do you feel about this personally? Do you appreciate that the driver behind you is giving you the heads up or is it just an act of arrogance that should be ignored?

It's annoying. I'm all for realism but frankly i think this should be stopped in real life too.

Same here with the added exception that i found it so annoying i lost interest in trying to finish higher up the order and made it my aim to make sure that my defensive driving was perfect so as to make sure that he did not pass. No deliberate blocking as such but just massively compromising my exit speed on corners etc so even if he did pass there was no chance of him ever catching anyone.

This is true for me every time haha and mid race I'm like "I need to change that button mapping" and then totally forget :lol:

Still better in GT6 when it would sound the horn haha some of my best laps sound hilarious

I believe that the reason it occurs in real racing is to signal a back marker that they're being lapped. I.e. if it is difficult to see the blue flag, or the chasing driver is impatient then it can advise the slower driver in front. The tactic doesn't really work in GT Sport as it invariably is used by people who just want to distract you, or think they are faster than they are.

I dont really see why this would be necessary, prototype cars have white lights, LM cars have yellow. if you see a set of whites behind you, don't block because they're faster and overtake you anyways.

What if you are a lapped car, being lapped by a car in your own class? Hence the point of it.

Yes, but how do you know if they are a competitor that you should race defensively against, or someone who is lapping much faster than you which you have to get out of the way for?

Blue flag, I hear your scream, but someone flashing their lights at you is more noticeable if you're in a complex string of corners etc. - hence why they do it because it's usually a quicker response than waiting for them to notice the blue flag.

because you are told how closely the next driver is behind you timewise in the top left hand corner of the screen so you don't need to be a rocket scientist to work it out.

Equally, what if both drivers flash their lights. Then you have no idea who is the driver your suppose to be letting through.

I was talking about real life, not in GT Sport, obviously it's clearer in GT Sport because of the HUD.

If I'm on a flying quali lap and someone ahead of me has clearly cocked up their lap, like I see them coming off the grass, I'll give them a flash to make them aware I'm on a fast lap. People will occasionally respect that and stay off the fast line until i'm through, but it's usually full of muppets who will just rejoin and try and get in your way, even though you're clearly much faster.

fair enough. my comments highlight why they are not needed in a game

No worries, I see how the confusion happened given how the other comments in between talk about the game :)

I would much rather they bring back the horn. If it's going to be pointless, at least make it amusing! :D
