For all you standard driving freaks out there.

Has anyone here ever paralell parked a manual in San Francisco? :nervous: When I moved there I had a big ol' manual U-haul with my Intergra on a trailer. It was about 10:00 PM on New Years Eve. That was one of the scariest things I've ever done. Talk about a crash course. Fortunately there was no crash. Then I had to get the car off the trailer, which was also a manual. Some of those hills are so steep. My parking brake got a lot of use there.

Yeah my handbrake (if that's the same thing(?)) gets a lot of use... in car parks :D I'm a lil hooligan i know... i know...

man i cant go over 1000 RPM without peeling out in those stupid things.....

well its all good doing hillstarts with your handbrake, when ur handbrake works. when u drive a car without a working one, u need to employ similar techniques to heel-toe, but they work just as well. though i must say u need to be a little more accurate cause disc brakes don't give as much as a handbrake does.

as for people trying to learn normal hillstarts, if you are worried, just pull up the handbrake, and move off just like normal, forget about it, you wont brake the handbrake, when ur off the hill or driving at speed, then release the handbrake :D

good advice has already been issued about learning the basics of manuals, i just want to add that if your car starts jerking as your lifting up the clutch it means it doesn't have enough gas, not that it has too much! something that took me quite a while to work out.

if in doubt just floor it. clearly this doesn't apply when ur parking ur car, but if you are in the middle of a busy junction, and everyone is honking at you calling you a n00b and there are no cars directly in front of u (providing also that you are in a front wheel drive car or one with traction control) place ur foot on the accelerator, push it as far as it goes and keep it there, then bring up the clutch however fast or slow you want, there's no way you can stall it then. it will get you out of the mess and away from the losers causing u agro :D

Don't put it in first... :D Most cars will set off nicely from 2nd gear with no trouble at all - and mine is a 63hp 1.3 and does it just fine.

1st gear is more or less a manoeuvring gear, for very low speed things like parking and 3-point turns. You don't HAVE to use it at all (and indeed you should never change down to first while the car is moving).

But it'll come to you with practice - learning a car doesn't take long at all.
Hey man, I cant start off my Golf in 2nd gear. But it is true that I put a sport cam in it.(It improves the high end, but takes away from the low end...) But if u can take off from second gear, i dont find its worth it cuz you'll be too low in the powerband. I always start off the car in 1st gear everytime im at a STOP or light. My dad's 328i can start off in second gear just as if it were in first tho... and even in third hehe. My dad accidentally forgot to downshift at a stop, so he started it with third. Was abit painful but the car didnt stall. New life experiences huh?

And after doing this a few times, your clutch will start to slip, and you will have to change it :P

hehe, I learned to drive a 5spd a few months ago in my WRX and I did exactly that on the way to school one day (tip..if you're learning 5spd don't wear boots with thick soles...wear some running shoes or something with a thin sole so you can feel the clutch better..I made that mistake hehe) after I got stuck in an intersection and I couldn't let the clutch out right in 1st 'cause of the stupid boots I was wearing so while I was slightly rolling forward I shifted into 2nd and gunned it...scared the bejesus out of myself haha, my head slammed against the headrest and I was off..luckily I didn't crash or screw up my dads car or anything. I ended up pulling into a parking lot and taking the boots off and I was fine the rest of the way to school. hehe

sweet :D im impressed u had the sense to put it into second at the time. but yeah the same shoes i prefer for ddr (dancing) i wear for driving. i.e. trainers with thin soles.

edit: oh yeah and on the topic, i spent all summer driving an auto transmission and it totally dulled the driving experience. you can have 10 times the fun at sub 50mph speeds with a manual car than with auto. (above those speeds it makes little difference)
