Forced Cockpit View

How about forced cockpit view? Many racers agree this is the only way to get that REAL driving experience, at least, as far as what you ACTUALLY see when driving with all the controls and adials in front of you.

This racer doesn't agree with it.

When I want a REAL driving experience I drive a REAL car.

Nothing should be forced on in a console racer. I use it but don't see the need to make others.

I dunno, when I drive an MR2 in real life it's usually not a black void inside shaped to the body of the car.

No it shouldn't be forced, nothing should be. Options and choices are the spice of life

Not forced. Cockpit view in GT5 does not allow for you to turn your head or even move your eyeballs sideways for a peak at the side mirrors. Until that is perfected, cockpit view will remain artificial.

cockpit view is fine in open top cars but you need to have a 65inch screen if its a closed top car cos its like looking through a post box

I've got my own steering wheel, so looking at a second one on screen doesn't make it more realistic for me. I do like the cockpit view, but i play just as well with the old GT view. (Pre cockipt style)

Yeah, the only cars I use cockpit view on are the formula cars and the karts 👍

How about, freedom for everything?
If you want a REAL driving experience, to get into a real car is needed.

This Asian pirate does not agree,if I want to race in cockpit view,I can just get in my brother's car and go to a local racetrack.

Agreed. I would use the cockpit view more IF (and only if) the animated wheel and hands were removed from the view.

?? Who said that. I think the controls for it are not mapped at start, but you can turn your head and look at the mirrors in GT5.

This 👍

Yes you can. If you are driving with an joystick just asign it to your right analoge stick in the options menu. with a wheel just asign it to the direction keys. Simple as that.

Are you talking look left and look right? I'm not talking about looking 90 degrees out the side window. That's useless in racing. How about just the ability to look toward the inside of the corner, like you would do in real life? In real life you try to look around the corner as far as you can. In GT5, I can't even tell where the a-pillar is on the passenger side of the car. That's what isn't realistic about GT5.

I use cockpit view when offline and I have the camera mapped to the right analogue stick so that you can glance left/right. Have you not tried it like this MotorCityHamilton? You can vary the view's angle of degrees between about 10 - 70, you can use it to view either mirror just fine or to look for the inside of a corner, I often have to do it on the back section of Fuji Speedway etc as often the apex is behind the windon pillar, I also do it to check on the AI if I'm passing on either side and can't see them.

There's also the head tracking feature but this only works in Arcade mode. I don't think it should be forced on for the offline aspect as that would frustrate masses of people, but I think there should be an option to do so online in a lobby.

I didn't know that I could do this. I already have my G27 mapped with the look left and look right buttons, but they look directly 90 degrees to the side. I can change the viewing angle of those settings?

Check this out.
It brings new life to cockpit view.
Unfortunately it doesn't work on Track creator tracks.

(I'm using a single 40 inch LED with the settings from the OP, except form screen angle @ 85)

From interior view you don't look a full 90 degrees to the sides(at least not in most cars, it seems to vary), that's only in the other views. It's generally far enough for checking the side windows but that usually means it's just a bit too far to not distract from the driving so you can only do it for a moment. I wouldn't mind if it didn't look quite so far in many cases.

Unfortunately without an analog button(or maybe it only works on the sticks with the DS3) you can't use the nice variable-look ability, it's just a toggle between straight ahead and all the way to the side. That's the one annoying thing about playing with my GT3 vs playing with the controller. I think it would probably be less distracting if the camera panned to the side like it does in rFactor instead of instantly switching, but if they did that it would probably wind up moving much too slow to actually look to the side when you need to and would have no option to adjust it. I also wouldn't mind a bit of look-to-apex/look-while-turning feature but they would probably manage to screw that up too and that will invariably bother some people as well(options, PD... you have lots already so how about some more useful ones?).

Of course if the view is forced everyone uses it so no one is at a real disadvantage(other than the analog stick vs toggle thing). And that is basically the point of forcing options like this, to get people on a level playing field. It's not like you can't drive from the interior view, it's just that many people have difficulty getting comfortable with it for various reasons.

The look left/right toggle can only be done on the DS3 analog stick, correct? There is no way to set that up using the G27, correct?

No, toggle left/right works on other wheels. It works fine on my T500rs and my old DFP. I don't know about the G27 as I've never owned one.

Usage of cockpit-view depends on how far you're sitting away from your TV compared to its size.

I know that with my setup bumper-view offers me the right perspective, but cockpit-view is like I'm sitting on the backseat, because what you should be concentrating on (i.e. the track) is reduced to a much smaller part of the screen, and what you should be seeing only in your peripheral vision (i.e. the cockpit) is suddenly taking much of the space you're focusing on.

Just doesn't work for everyone.

It's Just wrong, it's not realistic at all. As has been mentioned the black void and the fact that i have a six axis controller in my hands. It's a game it's not technical enough on the car (vehicle) set up screens to be a sim.
SRF forced on has caused enough moaning (rightly too) on here also.
Just my 2 cents....

Anyone ever tried to use the PS Eye Headtracking option in GT5? Its rubbish, but it helps me hit tight corners such as the last 2 before the main straight in Fuji.

Yeah, the only cars I use cockpit view on are the formula cars and the karts 👍

So true. In most of the other cars it just feels wrong. But you use cockpit in the kart or open wheel racers, (with a big enough TV) you really feel like your there

For me, the only way cockpit view looks good in the game is when you are using a premium car but in a standard car? It doesn't feel the same.

But even if it's in cockpit view, the front dash compromises what you see in the front, giving you blindspots to your sides, unless you look to your sides with your thumbstick.

Just one quick question... if so many of those who posted on this thread whould rather not race in cockpit view, why are we all whining about there being not enough premium cars?
