I think after a certain point, there can be too many gears.

Yeah you lose too much momentum between shifting (manual) than what its worth making up in gas efficiency in my opinion.

Because a 10 speed tranny will have more marketting pazzazz to it than a well done CVT. People like big numbers attacked to their stuff, and 10 speed tranny is just that.

Why not just make a more efficient CVT?

It's not something either brand has had significant success with, and advancements both with conventional automatics as well as new dual-clutch systems have come along far enough where there isn't as much of a difference as what there used to be.

We'll have to see if they turn out to be as good as the current ones. Early units in terms of quality were iffy at best, programming was all over the board in terms of being done correctly, or not. It was weird seeing that the Ford applications were not designed to take as much power as the GM units, despite sharing the same overall design.

My primary concern is that, with that many gears, the already troublesome gear-hunting will likely get out of hand. Without proper spacing, or a reasonably mapped ECU, I fear the car will spend more time looking for the right gear than actually being in gear.

Don't know, but I have read that BMW and Mercedes are developing 9 speed transmissions too, the Mercedes one could launch with the new S Class or when their new generation of straight-6 cylinder diesel engines release.

I guess they have their reasons (marketing, costs, efficiency)

I heard Land Rover were going to develop a 9 speed transmission and I thought was godsmacked but a 10 speed? Why? GM and Ford just need to make more efficient engines.

 The two bitter enemies join forces. Ford vs GM runs deep in American blood. This is gonna boil some blood.

Anyway, the problems are the car companies are cheap. Use better parts & the MPG sky rockets. My brother-in-law had a Durango that got 7MPG put a Cold Air Intake on it & it jumped to 12MPG. It also doesn't help the corrupt government helps with the ****** engines putting restrictions on car parts. My car it's illegal to use most cold air intakes on it in my state. Don't know why since that will make my car go over the 30MPG mark.... *coughs* oil companies *cough*

It had a cold air intake on it to being with

Apparently, the forces of the galactic empire could not accept such alliance:
The head of Volkswagen Group, Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn, has announced that the firm is developing an ultra-efficient 10-speed DSG gearbox and a high performance modular diesel engine that develops 134bhp per litre of displacement.

From factory it's just an air intake. It may use "cold" air but it's not a cold air intake. Now I'm talking about normal cars. Of course higher end cars got some crazy things under the hood.

On my car the air intake is a cheap poor designed plastic piece but it's illegal to put on a better built metal K&N cold air intake which makes it run better. Government ain't smart in my state.

They are designed with that it mind and perform almost no better than stock ones on most cars. Only thing you really get is slightly better MPG as you've shown but most cars gain little or no power from them. That said, that is mostly dependent on the engine size.

And I hate that people call them cold air intakes. This isn't against you, just in general. An intake to me is the manifold, and the air cleaner/tube is a separate unit. An intake is an intake, not cold/hot whatever name you give it. That's a personal thing though.

The Camarang IROC-LX. In order to own one, you need a Class-A licence and your hair has to come to at least your shoulders on the back.

I consider the air intake the entire assembly that goes to the throttle body. There's factory intakes (has the boxed air cleaner), cold air intakes (there's no box but a heat shield) & warm air intakes (no box or heat shield). On my car I would gain 6HP from a cold air intake which is noticeable to a car nut. They also sound much better than factory intakes. Hey, I rather spend $300 on a cold air intake then $800 plus on body kits that aren't painted. Ricers are idiots.

Sound better? Never heard that one  I think it makes more difference if your car has a smaller engine as I said. 6hp isn't all that noticeable, at least to me.

Of course I'm old school. When I think intakes, this is what I think of:

With a carb, spacer and air cleaner on top.

You be surprised. Breath with a whistle in your mouth. Same concept as a cold air intake on a car.
