Ford hopes its Reflex concept shows that small cars can be bold, American and innovative. Ford thinks the concept will be one of the stars of the Detroit show. Reflex features a diesel-electric hybrid system using diesel, electric and solar power. This combination of power can deliver maximum fuel economy – up to 65 mpg, says Ford – without compromising performance.

The concept features an electric motor on the rear axle in addition to the hybrid system on the front axle. The rear motor provides all-wheel-drive capability

The energy is stored in a new-generation lithium-ion battery pack, using the technology found in cell phones. Ford was the first manufacturer to produce a vehicle using this type of battery system when it introduced the Ford Ka research vehicle in 2000.

Another green feature is that the concept uses ground rubber from scrap athletic shoes, called Nike Grind, as insulation to reduce noise and vibration in the car’s interior.

The interior uses a 2+1 backseat configuration. Mesh seat covers are transparent, offering maximum airflow for comfort. The cockpit comes alive with keyless activation: At the touch of a button, the instrument cluster controls appear in a blue hue as the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) switch on.

Safety features include inflatable safety belts and BeltMinder for backseat passengers. The inflatable safety belt helps reduce injury risk to second-row occupants. BeltMinder alerts the driver when second-row occupants are not buckled up.

Blazin's Note: One funky looking car, but with promising technology. I think diesel hybrids are going to catch on strong because you actually see an improvement with them, unlike the minimal improvements you see with gas hybrids.

I wish all cars had mesh seats. They make perfect sense, and yet no one does it? I always wind up with a sticky back after a sunny day in traffic, even with the AC on full blast.

Diesel electric sounds great.

I've always thought mesh seats would work well to, but they would be unsafe I would think if you were in an accident. Think about the guy in the back seat slamming into your back throught the mesh.

Ouch. I'd actually rather be the guy in the front seat than the guy with the pattern permanently scarred into his forehead.

But ventilated seats, at least, would be nice.

Diesel electric could be a great in some European countries. What about the States??? I don't think that you find alot of diesels in the US, except trucks and busses. I personnally don't like diesel. I drove a diesel for many year and even with the current high gas prices over here in Europe, I didn't choose for a diesel. Yesterday, my friend invited me to test drive his new BMW 120d (163 hp). Nice but I still prefer my car (also a Ford).

Gasoline hybride cars are much more interested.

I know the Lincoln LS has air conditioned seats which are really nice.

Kind of reminds me of a 21st century Capri, and I'm not talking about the Aussie-built drop top disaster from the '90s. But the real hot stuff is the powertrain. Diesel/electric/solar hybrid? 65 mpg? Yes, please! :D
