Remember in Qatar last year when there was mandatory pitstops every 20 laps and everyone just got on with it? Drivers spent the race driving flat out to use the tyres as they didn't need saving, lots of passing and a result nobody really knew until the end.

Monaco needs flat out racing, not management. Quali is the best bit of Monaco because of how close the drivers get to the walls and how spectacular they are on the edge. Back to that for 78 laps will encourage more passing attempts, increase the chances of mistakes and force teams to make many pitstops. Saying a set of dry tyres can do a maximum of 22 laps guarantees a 3-stop, with enough variety that each pit window is over about 3-4 laps.

This was done for the Bathurst 12 Hour and it killed the strategy games. Probably not the best comparison though because GP's aren't the same as endurance races.

Ferrari played a blinder of a strategy at Monaco by managing the gap back to 5th place, stopping McLaren pitting. It was impressive, but gave us no action. We can afford to kill that strategy game at least.
 
The cars are too big, the track is too small. It's an impasse.

If you need to contrive in order to have a watchable race, that race is doomed whether people want to accept it or not.
 
There also wasn't racing in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s. It doesn't make a difference if the cars are 180, 200, 215 cm wide. The actual Porsche and F2 are 190 cm and more likely to have overtakes but still only few.
 
Screw Monaco. Charles has his win, now they can take it off the schedule.
No, fix the cars and the sporting regulations to make Monaco an interesting race and every race will be better.
Easiest thing to try is just use 3 compounds of tyres. Alternately require red flag tyre change to be same compound.
From a car regulations they could slow the cars down, make them smaller and increase braking distances.

The cars were smaller and slower before and they still couldn’t race there.
 
Lets just say we were to modify the track layout.
It will still have the biggest issue which is track width.

Even with this high speed layout which offers 60m more in the tunnel and a 500m section from the road just west of the current start finish section.
This may give a slightly better chance of overtaking but this will increase speeds and will make this narrow track more dangerous
I am sure the city state will fix that little bump on the bottom to keep F1, but even that section is quite narrow too, but if straightened out, will give even high speeds before turn 1.

yep, and it's awesome.

Mostly Monaco would be more interesting with strategy mix up. Use all three compounds to ensure two stops for strategy interest. Minimum 2 or 3 racing laps per tyre compound to prevent red flag / safety car tyre dumping mass pit scenarios.

Generally all races would be better with multiple stops as it introduces more unknowns and more strategic variation. I don't understand how Fl is for so long still seeming happy with the boring 1 stop mostly everyone does the same option races.
 
If we're reprofiling Monaco in ways that'll never happen, just bring back the Gasometer hairpin. Remove the swimming pool, fill in the harbour between the present swimming pool exit and Rascasse and make the pitlane from the present Piscine entry to Anthony Noghes, and move the start finish to its late 50s location. Multiple lines available through the corner would enable passing on entry or exit, and it seems much wider than any point on today's circuit, even taking the narrower cars into account.

idk why people hate on Monaco, you know what you're going to get every year. I watched a full race reply of the 91 monaco gp when the cars were smaller, lighter, and cooler looking and monaco was still a "boring" race. I just appreciate it for the spectacle it is, not every street track can be as awesome as Miami ;P

Back in the 60s the cars were slower and more narrow, less reliant on downforce.
So a simple mistake, would lose you time and can get you passed

Today, due to the cars being wider than a damn semi carrying a piece of mining equipment you can be slow and not get passed if you are smart
Look at when happened when daniel lost the hybrid system, no one could pass him.

This would be worse. Rue Grimaldi & Av. Du Port would literally be single-file through sections of it because of how much narrower it is than the main straight, & obviously, there's near zero room for any support vehicles/structures.

Monaco is far too compact to make any giant changes to its infrastructure & it'd be much easier/cheaper to just give them different cars, if only for this one race.

um, okay. Yes, the 60's cars were different but we aren't going to go back to that any time soon. I wasnt alive back then and Id guess that you werent either? I don't have a problem with one race out of the TWENTY FOUR(!!!) this season being a Monaco. It's fine, let the f1 have their fun and champagne and parade of cars down tiny streets in a tiny little expensive city. It'll be okay
