I was taught that it's supposed to be burned in a civilized manor, and not as a public thing. No one ever told me about cutting it into strips or any of that. Although we're probably both right, the cutting part could just be an optional thing. I'll take a look on Wikipedia.👍

Edit:

If the edges become tattered through wear, the flag should be repaired or replaced. When a flag is so tattered that can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.

It says nothing about cutting it, but it can be done that way as long as in a dignified manner.

Yea, flag retirement has a ceremonial aspect to it that specifies handling instructions including cutting the flag before burning. Your local boy scout troop will be happy to retire any of your old flags in ceremonial fashion.
