You're supposed to be imagining that he's just floating out there, as skydivers appear to be... and forget that the plane is not in freefall to the Earth. So a passenger saw a skydiver floating outside with the sign, and grabbed a phone and snapped a picture, and then the skydiver looked down and like Wile E. Coyote he realized that physics is real and then fell.
