Or famously, the "Banana flavourings" that taste like a variety of Banana that went extinct in the 50's, after the Banana flavouring was invented.

Totally old quote, but I'd recently learned that artificial banana flavoring existed well before bananas were plentiful, which sort of explains its staying power. In the mid-to-late 1800s, few people in the Western world had actually even tried a banana, so it was formed from pineapple (also an exotic fruit of its time) and pears (much more commonplace).

So the artificial banana kind of, but not quite, predated the banana. As you said, it was also much closer to the Gros Michel variety – which is nearly extinct – than the Cavendish varieties which are plentiful but more resistant to fungus and disease (for now). Also, they're slightly radioactive.

Can't help you on grape soda, though...can't remember the last time I've had it. On the other hand, I'll have a Cheerwine every so often, which is really quite cherry-flavored but mostly just sugar and corn syrup.

The story of the banana industry is surprisingly interesting. This is definitely worth a listen (as is most of the stuff on that channel).

I used to pick up cases of bananas at a Dole warehouse. 30 foot tall gas chambers with a very tall garage door. And a very lot of them. They were forcing them to ripen more quickly. I always found it somewhat interesting.

Fun Fact: Starbucks (initially) had employees deliberately misspell people’s name to generate free marketing via social media.
Too bad they deny it. Maybe they are afraid to admit it, fearing they could be sued over it?
