Archaeologists say they've made a colossal discovery from ancient mythology -- Pluto's Gate, known as the gate to hell -- in southwestern Turkey. It was believed to be the portal to hell and the connection between mortals and Pluto, the god of the underworld.
Located in the ancient town of Hierapolis, now known as Pamukkale, the hole in the ground contained lethal vapors according to a story by Discovery News. The report goes on to say that once the ruins had been excavated, inscriptions of messages to gods Pluto and Kore were found.
Using technology to digitally reconstruct the ruins and find the location of the historic vents, Pamukkale is on the UN's list of sites identified for preservation and protection, says ABC News.
The area plays host to many tourists who use the nearby hot springs for therapeutic purposes, but as a Yahoo! story states, the actual portal known as the "Gate to Hell" is just as poisonous today as it was reported to be thousands of years ago -- birds died during excavation when they tried to get close to the fumes.

Makes me wonder what the fumes are made of.
