Archaeologists say they've made a colossal discovery from ancient mythology -- Pluto's Gate, known as the gate to hell -- in southwestern Turkey. It was believed to be the portal to hell and the connection between mortals and Pluto, the god of the underworld.

Located in the ancient town of Hierapolis, now known as Pamukkale, the hole in the ground contained lethal vapors according to a story by Discovery News. The report goes on to say that once the ruins had been excavated, inscriptions of messages to gods Pluto and Kore were found.

Using technology to digitally reconstruct the ruins and find the location of the historic vents, Pamukkale is on the UN's list of sites identified for preservation and protection, says ABC News.

The area plays host to many tourists who use the nearby hot springs for therapeutic purposes, but as a Yahoo! story states, the actual portal known as the "Gate to Hell" is just as poisonous today as it was reported to be thousands of years ago -- birds died during excavation when they tried to get close to the fumes.

Makes me wonder what the fumes are made of.

Most likely the same potentially lethal gases you find around open volcanic vents such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid and hydrogen sulfide.

The greatest achievements of Soviet Scientists:

- Sputnik, the world's first satellite
- Chernobyl, the world's greatest nuclear disaster
- Door To Hell, a perpetually burning hole in the ground

They started off great, but could never really repeat that initial success.

Some media sources have been showing this pic just after the meteorite fell near Chelyabinsk.
For the first time, they made some people **** bricks.

Not gonna try and get into a debate but if anyone wants to really know about hell try reading the bible.

I thought the Tsar Bomba was apart of that?

The contradictions and paradoxes contained within certainly suffice as my version of Hell.

But will you please stop with the trying to save our souls.

That is fairly awesome they found this "gate" as it is always neat to see how such things were perceived in ancient times.

Whoa someone seems a bit hostile, that just sounded like a recommendation on understanding the topic of hell, not moral guidance. Kind of like when someone brings up areas of the world, and a person suggests a geography book...

Anyways, I prefer stories like this too that big religious book since they came first...and are more fun!

It's funny 'cos Pluto's Gate predates the Bible.

And was first walled off and then destroyed by Christians. 1700 years ago.
