Gear Display

Is there a way to turn off that gear display thingo? I think it gives away too much. It tells you when you are approaching a corner too fast and it also tells you what gear you need to be in to take that corner. I mean it's nice and everything but I don't want to feel like the game is holding my hand through the whole race. Do they have this sort of thing in real life? I wouldn't know because I'm still too young to drive real cars

Unfortunately, you can't turn it off. I try not to look at it, but I can only avoid it to some extent. The gear is not always right BTW.

No, they don't, but I've found it to be a replacement for the sense of speed and feel for the track you'd have in real life. For example, you can't feel changes in the road/track surface and you have limited peripheral vision so its harder to set your own markers. Of course, you can set your own markers (I use the outside kerb of Fuji's first turn as one), but its not as easy as in a game like Ferrari Challenge which has distance markers on basically every turn.

This reminds me of the 'Duct Tape Over Brake Indicator Experiment' thread in the GT5P forum lol. I never pay to much attention to the indicator myself, it's mostly too early (for braking points) and the suggested gear is 99% always one gear lower than the best gear.

That's right.
As per the user manual (02. How To Play > Improving Your Driving Skills):

Use the car's Gear Display as a guide: a solid red means you're driving at a safe speed; a flashing red means that you are going too fast for an upcoming portion of the track.
