General discussions for GTA Vice City Stories

You can cancel and save after every 5 levels, - and then pick up where you left.
Just in case your PS2 isn't reliable enough for all 15 menial levels in 1 go.

I got Vic stuck a couple of times, - but haven't experienced any lock-ups sofar (played it to 100% 2 times).
Quite a few "glitches" with empire building and occasional bad lag though.
And then there's the odd missing traffic thing.
Haven't seen any glitches preventing 100% (unless you take over empire sites on the E island before it's officially open)
There's one bug with completion% though, - you get 100% completion with only 99.6% completed.
Apart from LCS, I've played the other GTA's on PC and they have their own problems. So I don't know if it's the worst (but seems worse than LCS).

Vigilante Rant Ahead: Sorry this has been irritating me for a couple of days now, I just want to get it off my chest.

I'm really irritated with how Rockstar Leeds keeps screwing with perfectly good missions, like vigilante. Vigilante time should be accumulative, they screwed that up in LCS and didn't have sense enough to fix it. But time shouldn't be a factor if they didn't change a couple of other important rules for Vigilante. There is a no-flat bonus for vigilante missions that Leeds didn't implement in VCS. I don't mind the targets shooting back, there's plenty of health and armor spread about, but I am sick an tired of replacing my bike a couple times per level due to flat tires. The whole strategy ends up revolving around protecting the tires of the bike; always approach cars and bikes from the rear, and attack foot targets on foot with the bike safely around a corner.

But then there's a 30 second limit to return to the vehicle, which is plenty of time to clear the targets, but completely useless for replacing a destroyed vehicle, - especially when the game has the nasty habit or not spawning any road vehicles. And you can't run with a wanted level to keep cop vehicles handy - the game spawns way too many cop cars for a 2 star wanted level.

Oh yeah... the VCS cops on foot are really quick. It's very difficult to get in/on a vehicle and get away without getting busted. I've taken to shooting them when I'm in a hurry, like during the vigilante 30 second limit. I don't like shooting cops, and try to avoid it. Partially because I don't want the stars, but mostly due to principle and policy. I like making GTA videos, but don't want to feed the fires by recording cop shootings if it can be avoided. Come on Rockstar - have the cops back off. Give me a way to work the bots and don't force me to shoot them.

The cop bike handling sucks, the Streetfighter can't jump, and the boats are way too slow, but I like the Benson.

[/rant]

On a lighter note - I swear I found a spaz on the east island when I hopped over to take a peek, but now I can't locate it. Anyone know where I can find it again?

I agree, but I think it is more of any issue in the Fire Truck missions than the Vigilante missions.

Agreed. I went through so many attempts at Vigilante missions (level 1-12 were cake. 13 was nearly the death of me) because they shortened the timer.

I've noticed that too. Its a lot harder than it used to be to run from the cops because they seem to have infinite sprint ability. Rather annoying. I think they could sprint in San Andreas, but I'm pretty sure they had stamina just like the player did. I usually have to just blast them, or get in the passenger side of a car an gun it in reverse.

I hate how they ruined the Blista Compact. What was a street race slayer (though a HUGE plus to them returning street races back to how they were in Vice City) is now an oversteery mess.

Not a clue. Sorry. I checked over at Gamefaqs, and the map they have is laughably inaccurate.

I agree with Orion_SR, - they somehow managed to turn the R3 missions into either something annoying (vigilante) and/or totally menial by adding more levels without new challenges (there's a new one which is even worse than paramedic).
The pleasant exception is taxi which is now quite enjoyable and they cut the required fares so that it doesn't get boring.
And if you want speed on water the check out the Jetski, make sure you have a dry towel nearby ;)

I've also somehow managed a 182m jump according to my stats page. How'd I managed that?
The game seems to consistantly add up distance on combination jumps, even bounces on landing can add significant distance.
Don't know if it's a bug or a feature, - but imho kinda lame.
They also added a bit of glue to Vic's backside, he can now to some extent hold onto a bike doing backflips, - just managed a couple of perfect quads on a PCJ.

I dunno about you, but I have hated all of the R3 missions that were not Vigilante or Taxiing since I first played them on GTA III. There are exceptions (Beach Patrol was a pleasant surprise), but that generally holds true with newer R3 missions as well (Pimping, for example. And Air Rescue). I haven't tried the Fire Helicopter yet, though.

I've noticed its quite fun with the Taxi. Not so much the Cabbie, but then again nothing ever is.

Nasty riptide they've got in Vice City Stories while waiting for the hurricane to hit.

I found it! I've got 99 Red Balloons right here on my old 45. Well... It's old now, but I may have bought it new. I can't remember now. I used to buy a lot of old 45s in the hope of someday owning a jukebox, but they got too expensive when John was shot. But this record is from 1983, which is long after that, so now I'm not so sure.

Ah, the memories Orion_SR :) That's a nice song I enjoyed listening too again and again back in the days, along with the other 80s songs.

The R3 missions are somewhat more convenient to do in VCS and R* have somehow taken away the challenge by implementing checkpoints. If there's one thing that's a welcome feature in them, it's the non failure of the missions when you have to switch to a new vehicle.

The addition of flaming stunt and sploosh face plant are rather funny.

I remember it too, though not with joy (the ability to understand german might have something to do with that).
Just wondering what John Lennon had to do with the cost of jukeboxes ???

Beach Patrol (not really a R3 mission btw.) would have been nice, - provided they combined the 3 missions and forced you to do 5 levels of each. Problem is you probably won't know of the others before you've completed all 15 repetitive levels on one.
I discovered one alternative by accident and never did find out about the 3rd by myself, actually had to get in and out at least 10 times before it popped up.
Fire Copter is ok, - mainly because you only need 5 levels.
The "Pimping" mission in VCS is better than SA (more variety).

Everyone's a Captain Kirk

The jukeboxes were always expensive, it was the cost of used records that became prohibitively expensive. So instead of collecting old 45s I started combing the used bookstores for interesting Sci-Fi. Technology still can't replace books. I'd much rather read my fiction on paper. But I've strayed off topic. Uh...

I haven't had time to play much, and only recently opened the east island so I haven't had a chance to find many of the new side-missions. I found an air rescue mission, and was doing great until the last target spawned in a basketball court right next to the wall. I couldn't hover close enough without grinding the blades off and blew the thing up. I was so irritated that I shut off the machine and haven't played since - but I've been a little busy anyway.

Is there any reason to leave the bikers on the map?
Anyone know where to find a spaz spawn?

Jeez, there's a lot of vehicle based missions in this game, huh? Every new car, bike, plane, chopper, etc. I find parked somewhere, I'm actually expecting a race, time-trial, etc. to start.

KM.

Yeah, once the 2nd island opens they're everywhere. Some of them are quite challenging.

Orion_SR
Is there any reason to leave the bikers on the map?
Not really, except there won't be as many Biker Angels available.
It's the best jumping bike in the game (much like the Avenger in LCS), but don't worry they won't disappear for good.
Only thing to worry about with business take-over, is to make sure you successfuly attack a Smuggler and a Robbery site after you open the 2nd island and before you've taken them all.
Otherwise you won't be able to develop those on your own.

I got a 4 flip jump the other day :D in an infernus...

I did notice the bikers angels seemed pretty fast... hadn't tried any jumps with it yet-- haven't got a chance to play in several days now... I'm up to Diaz missions--

You're the stuntman Spuds:tup:

Interesting how you can also achieve a FLAMING TRIPLE INSANE STUNT (I got 107m) on this game. My longest jump so far is 225m on a nice spot.

Just like you said, bikers angel is the bike for long jumps.

I'm starting to get a bit into this game now (35% and first Mendez Bros mission coming up) and this has been the most annoying GTA game so far.

The main reason applies to all GTA games but it has been much more irritating in VCS because of the take-over of new Empire sites. And it is that rival gangs can shoot as much as they want at me without getting the cops attention, while it sometimes feels like I can't fire a single shot before getting wanted stars. This has often meant a two or three star wanted level during take-overs of new sites, which has lead to a number of extra wastes for me.

Otherwise, the game is quite enjoyable besides the fact that the game sometimes freezes right after dropping of patients in Paramedic. I have tried it a third time and this time I just got as far as level 3 before having to restart the game.

I have taken over 29 of the sites and just got one Bikers left on the east island but there is no bike outside to destroy to start the mission. Do I have to wait until after some mission or is it some sort of bug or glitch?

It isn't a bug, - it will sort itself out before long ;)

Taking over sites isn't bad, - the wanted level will disappear when you succeed. In reality you only have to make it inside the building, - so just blast the cops as well.
Defending your own sites on the other hand is a bitch, - succeeding won't clear *'s and before you got the wanted level cleared and get some fresh armour etc. the next attack will be on it's way.

I found some jumps and noticed that you now get a "multiplier" for height as well, - so it should be possible to do quadruples. .

I thought this post was BS--- however... I did get a quadruple insane jump last saturday-- I was trying to repeat my 4 flip jump with an infernus and got one--- sorry I didn't write down my stats or take a screen shot-- it didn't seem to be a particularly high jump though--- it did have decent rotation and a couple of flips.

When I get a chance I'll take a pic of my stat page.

I noticed the height multiplier right away, and then made a point of landing a few quadruples, just to make sure, but I haven't spent any time padding my stats or looking for good jumps. I'm still stuck where I was, with the east island finally open, and no time to play. If you look through the data files for some of the older GTA games, you'll find reference to quadruple jumps in the text files, there just didn't seem to be any way to activate all 4 multipliers. Well... for LCS anyway. I never spent much time working on insane stunt jump with the other GTAs.

for vc-- I'm certain a superjump would have revealed a quad-- although I personally never got flip stats on a superjump---

I'd had plenty of height, distance, and rotation though

I'm still stuck where I was, with the east island finally open, and no time to play.

I hear that-- I squeeze in a bit here and there-- still plugging away at the story missions-- some sides

Wow! My first answer in mine topic and we're already to 84 posts. Obviously, I cannot write more than a lot because still I don't have GTA Vice City Stories, but have created this topic for the other members. Goodbye.

P.s. For errors, remembered: I'm Italian!

Stupid, dumb ass, helicopter mission. Damn thing took an hour and a quarter to complete, and the whole time I'm thinking - this sucks. Thank God the other helicopter mission only had 5 levels; my thumb was starting to swell.

The beach mission isn't too bad; I got to chase motorcycles driving on the beach. But for the most part, I'm just not feeling the love for this game.

Yep that one is really long and menial, - apparently you can't even knock off the buggers (why should they have all the fun, when you're bored to death?).
1, 2, 3, 4 and 4 in a storm whould have covered it nicely in 5 bearable levels.

Now go and try out Crims on Water Wings ;)

I get the impression that whoever was working on handling.cfg walked off the job and no one else could figure it out so they used the draft version.

Hey, has anyone else spotted the Rockstar pool? If you hover just out of range of the modified detail you can still see the rough detail of the pool from the original map. I'm wondering if that's going to change later.

I wanted to say something positive, but that's the best I could do. I think I'll go back to my homework, it's bound to be more fun the the trouble Phreak is setting me up for. Got anything to suggest that will help restore my faith in the game?

@Orion_SR, you mean this one?

It's kind of hard to take a snapshot of it as you can't approach it close enough while you have to keep the heli steady.

How about authoring the VCS Record Book so we can compete again to keep us busy as well before October? Or vids again perhaps for some neat tricks in the game? ;)
