Unless something was listed as being included in the vanilla game, than taken out, no, you didn't pay for it.
It's not news to anyone that a lot of large companies waste money.
No publicly traded company would knowingly waste billions of dollars on something.
You think people will suddenly stop drinking Coca Cola if they no longer saw the product on TV?
Probably not, but they may drink less of it. For instance they started putting names on bottles and cans a few years ago and sales went up.
You could apply what I said to pretty much any major thing, how many adds have you seen for Star Wars? The Olympics?

That depends on location I'm guessing, I can certainly see there being certain spots that charge thousands but aren't worth a cent.
Then there's the plethora of free online sites where you can upload videos
They may technically be free, but if you actually want people to see them you'll have to pay to get them "featured", otherwise the only people that will see it will be those who already know about it.
, and forums where you can spread the word.
And who will spread that word? Not to mention some boards may require you to pay for the privilege of posting about your own product.
In any case, I am not knowledgeable enough about advertisement to properly argue against it, nor is it relevant to the thread. All I can say is that I don't believe the return investment offsets such high marketing costs.
If you're not knowledgeable about it, why not leave it to those who are, in this case the people deciding that spending so much is worthwhile?
