This is the coolest thread posted here in like ever. A friend of mine knew about some places like that in Spain. I'll report back.

Sadly, in Mexico there is really nothing like this... at least not that I know of. It would be cool as heck to find something like this in here.

Times Beach, Missouri

Times Beach is a ghost town in St. Louis County, Missouri, Missouri, United States, located 17 miles (27 km) southwest of St. Louis and 2 mi (3 km) east of Eureka. Once home to more than two thousand people, the town was completely evacuated early in 1983 due to a dioxin contamination that made national headlines. It was the largest civilian exposure to dioxin in the country's history.

I used to drive past it as kid when my Dad would take us down to Branson. It always interested me although we never saw much.

Kaskaskia, Illinois is a village in Randolph County, Illinois, United, States. A major French colonial town, it's peak population was about 7,000 people when it was used as a regional center. Kaskaskia later became capital of the new Illinois territory in 1809, a position it held until it was moved to Vandalia in 1819.

Most of the town was destroyed in 1881 when the nearby Mississippi River shifted eastward to a new channel, taking over the lower 10 miles of the Kaskaskia River. This resulted in the deforestation of the river banks, due to the need for wood for nearby Mississippi River steamboat traffic.

Crash
I think that's actually all demolished now.

Yeah, back in the 90's I think it was they demolished the walled city of Kowloon.

I'm not sure whether it was ever deserted (doubt it), even for long before demolition, but it's still pretty amazing and fun to do some research on. Had the highest population density in the world IIRC, about 30'000 people living within something you could run round in the space of a minute.

I'm from Japan, but I had never heard of it before. I guess it was nicknamed Gunkanjima("Battleship' Island, for its' looks)

Great thread! 👍

Yup! It's called that too.

Has anyone heard of the Ryugyong hotel in Pyongyang? It was apparently supposed to be the tallest hotel if it opened on schedule. However North Korea entered a period of economic crisis and never got to finish the hotel.

Might be a bit off topic but it is kind of related.

This thread was reminding me of the film based on a game I think called Silent Hill. A ghost town in similar state as that coal fire in the original post. I saw a film called "Tallman" on Netflix, and this had little bit of that as well. They need more films in these kind of locale. I love the atmosphere. As long as they are on TV or internet. :P

I remember that one. They were bare concrete for years. I honestly thought that they might never be able to finish it, because their people are starving. I guess they have their priorities.

As long as I roam around the interwebz OP is opening post.

/interwebzveteran.

It means both I think.

People say "@ OP." One does not simply talk at a post per se, but one can talk to the original poster.

Visited a few ghost towns in the mountains of British Columbia with the GF's father while visiting him. The one is actually pretty spooky, as theres only 1 house on the side of the road, and when you pull over and take a small walk, you come to the graveyard of the town that used to be there...the spooky part is, theres all these small ditches in it that you keep walking over, which are actually graves that people have dug up a long time ago.

The Ruoyung Hotel in Pyongyang is actually almost finished. They had a cellphone deal where that some Egyptian company could launch a cell phone service if they finished the hotel.
