Ah! Now we're getting somewhere. I found this forum with another user reporting the exact same problem from just a few days ago:

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/3659149/all

They solved it by disabling Avast. Are all of you running that security software?

There also seems to be some issues with SPDY protocol implementation in the latest builds of Chrome. Here's two related discussions going on at Reddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/chrome/comments/3ej5ua/err_spdy_protocol_error/
https://www.reddit.com/r/techsuppor...gle_chrome_will_not_load_some_png_images_due/

I'm running Avast, and the latest build of Chrome. I had been running the beta version of Chrome but thought that was the initial issue and went back to normal Chrome. Then I switched the Firefox.

This comment in the first reddit link just fixed the issue with images on Chrome for me.

Tried /u/jherara link, opened chrome://net-internals/#events&q=type:SPDY_SESSION%20is:active, clicked on the arrow in the right corner, clicked on flush sockets, reddit started working again. Go figure...

Might only be a temp fix but it's better than nothing for now.

Update: Disabling Avast fixed the issue on Firefox, although just disabling the Avast Online Security made all the smileys broken.

With having two browsers, I think I'll run Chrome with my anti-virus software active.

For me, disabling Avast's web protection services (the extension and the internal Web Shield component in the antivirus client) completely fixed all the smileys. This is rather funky--I've had Avast for quite a while now and issues only started to appear recently.

Same. I even checked for an update first for Avast (which there was, but didn't fix anything) before disabling Avast.

Wow. What happens if you click on this link to go directly to one of the files?

Thanks for the screenshots. This is one of the more bizarre issues I've ever seen reported here. The smilies are all GIFs (animated or not), so that's one common thread, at least.

What version of Windows are each of you running?

Right-click one of the broken smilies and select "Open Image in New Tab" in Chrome, or "View Image" in Firefox. What do you see? What happens if you do a "hard refresh" by holding down the CTRL key while you hit the refresh button?
Windows 7

Nothing happens when I right click on a broken smiley and click on "view image". Hard refresh opens a new tab showing this thread.

Try the suggestions in post #31. If those don't fix the issue... :scared:

Typical me, posting before reading all the comments.

Yep, avast is the guilty party. Disabled avast and all is well.:bowdown::gtpflag:👍:gtplanet:

Look how happy I am. I'm able to use smilies again.

So my original suspicions were right after all. Glad it's not a deeper PC issue on my end, really.

It does make sense, given how some GIFs responded by loading normally whenever I fiddled with the Avast add-on. That, and I recall an update needing to be re-installed earlier during the same day this problem began. So there's a likely connection. Whether or not it's all linked to the infrequent navigation bug, I'm still unsure.

Thanks for sniffing it out, @Jordan 👍

This is my second problem with Avast. First was when I tried to run dashcamviewer for my dashcam and now a smilie problem.

I'm probably going back to Emsisoft.

Have you tried disabling only the web protection services?

Here's what it looks like for me:

Same issue. Running Windows 8 using Google Chrome with Avast antivirus.

That would explain why it's fine for me, I use Norton Internet Security, not Avast.

...Yesterday I upgraded to Windows 10 and this issue popped up for me as well. If Avast is the culprit here, then all I can do for now is to wait for an official fix. Dang it. I only use Firefox as I'm most familiar with it, but will try with Chrome later on to see if I get the same problem.

If it's Firefox, the issue is Avast. Disabling the web shields might be enough to fix it.

----------------------------

If it's Chrome, it's the SPDY issue I pointed out. It just so happens, the fix I thought would be temporary, was in fact temporary. The SPDY error popped back up just now and this time I added --use-spdy=off in the target box for the Google Chrome properties. Can be found by right clicking the Google Chrome shortcut/icon and selecting Properties.

So, in doing so, it now reads like this for me: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --use-spdy=off

Of course, it's just the bit after the quotation close that needs to be added. Thought I'd post this in case anyone else runs into further issues before it's officially corrected.

...Yeah, I just logged in using Chrome. Now none of the smilies/gifs work. Man, problems after problems. Sigh.

I'll see what happens after following your instructions. Hopefully I don't break anything...

...I give up. Dunno what's going on. It gets worse, then gets better, and today, I did a little experiment and went to a site that offers smilies, and all of them show up on no problem there. But when I use those smilies here it doesn't show up in GTP. Gaaaahhh.

Still using Firefox, as Chrome feels so... crummy.

So you've tried disabling HTTPS scanning in Avast already? That did the trick for me. And after that, it enabled itself again but the smileys and GIFs still show. Dunno what's up with that.

...I'm technologically challenged so I've no idea what you're talking about, but might as well give it a shot.

See ya later...

Under Avast's settings, there'a a page labeled "Active Protection." Under that, go to Web Shield and click "Customize." Disable the HTTPS scanning from there and see if it helps.

...Yeah, I just did that like couple minutes ago, but no joy. Been trying over at the suggestions forum but nothing's changed.

Having said that, it's fine here in this thread. So I'm still investigating.

Edit: after trying out in few different forums as well as exiting and re-booting Firefox, plus re-activating Avast's https thingy and all that jazz, I'm cautiously happy to report that things have normalized. Still in wait-and-see mode, mind you. :)

Well, back on Firefox now. Both fixes on Chrome have been temporary. Guess that browser will have to wait for an update.

...I'm back to report that my smilies are working, but smilies by some members are still not visible. So that's like 90% sorted. Gaaahhh. :irked:

Well at least I can use smilies, which is better than nothing...

Smilies and most GIF's working for me, but I've been having an issue lately trying to post photos using a URL and getting the nice little image with the red X. Anyone else?

Yes, that's the on issue left that I've been trying to find a solution to. Some normal issues just appear broken for me.

...Oh lordy no. The problem's back again. Sigh. Again I can't see the smilies. Gaaahhh. I guess I'll do the Avast https thing again...
