GilesGuthrie's Gallery: now inc Leuchars Air Show 2012

5 second exposure? 👍 Nice and sharp. Did you take any more shots? Some action ones would be good.

ISO 1000!!!

Thats an exellent level of detail for the speed, great shot and good to see you didn't get eaten.

The detail and noise absence is absurd for an ISO that high. On that, what a beautiful animal. Great work Giles! 👍

Thanks for all the kind words about the tiger folks.

Here are some from the Edinburgh Festival. These folks are out promoting their shows. For most of them, they're heavily committed financially to ticket sales, so this work is more important than the performances themselves.

Great stuff as always Giles, but you've not put up the one of the woman with the Magner's cider sign?

Love the subtle colours in that one.

Go on then Scaff, just for you! (You like her do you? :P)

Ohhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

Actually I like the way the colours on the sign match the wall behind it, just works for me.

(anyway I notice you also hid the picture of the girl in stockings - bloody bloke getting in the way)

Yeah, I'm sure you can imagine it was almost impossible to get a clear shot of her or her companions, all equally (un)dressed

She had companions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I am seriously miffed I don't live in Edinburgh.

Fab photos Giles, with great DOF. I'd be happy to let the Amnesy International girls explain their plight :sly:

Also, the woman facing the camera on the right in the first photo appears to have an arm growing out of her ear :D

The tiger shot is just...gorgeous. It really makes me look forward to going to the zoo in a few weeks. Fantastic work.

I also very much like the bowling alley shot. Sometimes spontaneity is a very good thing.

Keep up the great work. ^^

Kumquat Flowers
20090818093107_1d3-3363.jpg

This kumquat tree is living something of a half-life. Meant for the conservatory, it seems that it might be too hot in there for the plant (certainly, the lemon tree died pretty smart-ish). The kumquat lives next to the conservatory, and rather than dying immediately (as most plants in our care do) it's surviving and producing new flowers and new fruits. A marvel of modern horticulture.

Uniformed Girl

Emma was pleased as punch with her new school uniforms. So much so that she was a willing model, not really understanding why I was making her stand in different places in each dress. She's seen the finished pic, and gets it now.

Focal Length: 27 mm
Exposure: 1/200 sec @ F/6.3, ISO 320 (Flash: Fired)

[EDIT] I'm not totally happy with the execution of this pic. The flash really blew out her face in the left shot, so I've really not been able to balance the colours across all three faces. I'd be interested to hear comments on this, because it's well above "family-pleasing" quality, but a little below "Giles-pleasing".

Definitely a above "family-pleasing" quality. I think the neck is more blown out than the face on the left... Skin tone seems fine (I assume natural complexion is quite light in your family).

Possible way to better the shot would be to reduce the power in the flash a little. Are you using TTL? Wack the flash into manual and push the focal length setting to 14mm. If it's an EX flash you can simply pull the built in diffuser over the flash and it will automatically drop it to 14mm strength. Another option is to apply a gel that you think will best match the ambient light.

Overall though the flash work is good. It’s especially hard to take a shot firing a flash at a subject with a window behind them, you managed to not get any reflection of yourself or the flash firing although there is some reflection still, possibly a laundry basket but I can’t quite make out what it is.

Yeah, we're all well-pale.

Hmmm, food :D
The first two pictures have to be my favorite of the set, specially the first one. It’s quite simple, but the harmony of brown, green and white tones made it for me. 👍

Indeed that is the best camper ever (and one of my favorite malts as well), and many thanks for the extra one, just for me.

Tunnel Vision

Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark III with EF24-70 F/2.8L USM
Focal Length: 28 mm
Exposure: 1/3 sec @ F/2.8, ISO 200 (Flash: Not Fired)

The tunnel at the Cairngorm Funicular presented an incongruously urban vista in the face of the spectacular Highland beauty outside. This shot was handheld on a moving funicular car. One third of a second baby.

Nearly north. The pillars you see are for the ski lifts. Simulating this frame in Google Earth, this looks like a 100km view, approximately.

Looking south-west you get an appreciation of the steepness of the slope. It hits you when you go up in the funicular, which seems to ascend 200m without you really noticing. The cloudy sky polarised nicely but played hell with lighting!

Yes, so I took two bodies and six lenses on a family day out. It doesn't make me a bad person, does it?

Not at all, I tend to carry two bodies when I go pretty much anywhere with the family. But then again, judging by the amount of photo gear in my study, I very well might have a problem

The tunnel shot is great, Impressive that you managed to hold still without an IS lens. The second & third shots are really lovely as well. Wonderful scenery. The last one however doesn’t work for me. The ground is too dark and the clouds are blown out too much as well.
