Hi all, just another one of my crazy ideas? Or could this be an important step in improving the damage in gt6? Glass shattering may see its place soon as racing games get more advanced.

In one of the early trailers of GT5, we did see broken windows on the front of a flipped 370z or something. I forgot exactly how it went.

Really? As I remember it, cars being able to flip was revealed rather late. I might be wrong though...
Can you find the video?

Edit: This video?

The best view is probably at 0:33 but it's a bit hard to see...

Hm. Interesting question.

Of the console games I've played (the BIG caveat being that I haven't clocked any significant time on Forza,) I'm of the opinion that Gran Turismo has the best (by way of realism) driving physics, by a HUGE margin.

That said, the *prettiest* game I've seen, in relation to damage modeling, is GRID, imo. Fantastic, spectacular, dynamic damage modeling... but physics leaning toward the "arcade-y" side.

I've yet to experience a game that does both exceptionally well. Given GT's (almost nonexistent) history with damage modeling, I'd be surprised if they brought in more for GT6.

As always thanks for your feedback, in the future maybe we could see it but it seems like another one of my far fetched ideas.

I have opened the downloaded video in my video editor program and joggled it forward and backward. I have to say, that your splattered glass in the red Nissan is the dashboard under the windscreen only, sorry.

The Shift damage effects were pretty good, especially compared to GT.

Depends on what you were after. Having the car flip and be totalled for being sideways on the grass really grated on me. Don't forget wheels flying off the car mid air. Car destruction was over done in Shift IMO. From memory, panel rubbing effects were OK though.

Again, I would be VERY surprised if they introduced any damage modeling better refined than what we currently have in GT5.

Busted glass, catastrophic crashes with fire and wheels getting orphaned; I don't see that happening in the franchise any time soon.

I would be pleasantly surprised if better damage modeling were included, but for me, it takes a back-seat to the driving physics. Won't be fussed if we don't get new and spectacular crashing.

I would be happy with well modeled bent panels and missing bumpers, but anything more than a guard coming off, I can do without.

I'm with you on it being far too easy to roll a car, but that's more of a physics problem than a damage one.

When I think about times I've seen footage of a race car actually rolling with the violence that they tended to in Shift, I sort of think that the damage modelling was not that far off.

I think it's just a physics problem making it appear worse than it was. If it was running GT5 physics, the most you'd usually see would be panel damage or maybe a big shunt knocking a corner off.

Before glass shatter/cracking effects PD needs to actually make it look like you are sitting behind a windscreen in cockpit view. Currently it just looks like an opening with no glass at all (except when it rains - then the resolution of the rain effects needs to be increased. The drops are too big). All is needed is some subtle light refraction/reflection effects.

I'm not sure how entirely true this may be,but I thought full damage capability came once you've gotten level 40 on both specs. I've managed to get the wrecked trophy with a regular subaru wrx in arcade mode and I gotta say to see parts dragging and the door coming loose, suspension alignment being screwed and simply damages all over was fun.
Have you guys gotten that trophy as well?

It is a big caveat and as a result is quite a way off, in terms of tyre model and suspension modeling FM4 (and the 4 is important) is quite a way ahead of GT5.

GT5's biggest physics issues relate to the use of simple grip multipliers for tyres, which do not take into account tyre width and the very simple suspension modeling.

That however is a discussion for an existing thread - https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=226995&highlight=physics

Forza's again is not bad, but both Grid and to a slightly lesser degree Shift have great looking damage models, but as you say the physics on both are not in the same league as GT or Forza.

The level 40 thing is myth, the simple truth is that GT5's damage model (apart from a very small number of cars) is very poor.

Overall physics and damage are the two areas that GT6 needs to improve on in a massive way.

True, I just hope in the making of those to be better in addition to tracks that something doesn't get overlooked or restricted for something else that we all love now, unless they removed the GT Museum, I wonder how much space that take up?

It may see its place as soon as several years ago on current consoles. I'm 97% sure that the DiRT series has shattered windows already. Do you play any racing games other than GT?

This myth was shot down years ago. I think it hung around within a few weeks following the release of GT5, so it was widely known to he bogus by the end of 2010.

Yes I have played Project Gotham, NFS Shift, The Run, GRiD, and NFS MW (PS3) and I do agree in terms of the damage physics that all games deliver. GT5 makes it feel like I can survive a 200 mph collision, although in terms of racing just like Forza; the games are at different levels compared to them. I just hope that the GT6 gets better than what it is now. If I were to mention any upcoming games that have caught my eye it would be Driver's Club which I'm looking forward to.

Shift 2 and dirt 2

All I want is a realistic damage engine and a demolition derby mode.
I definitely don't anticipate a demolition derby mode for this franchise.

The various interviews and press junkets that Kaz has done, I'm not led to believe that he has any interest in demolition derby at all. If one of the future GT titles had a demo derby mode, I would be VERY surprised.

Hmm, you're absolutely right. Thanks.

Especially if your race car has plastic windows.

Most of the plastics they use are brittle enough to shatter, they're just much tougher and lighter than glass. Polycarbonate shatters, as everyone will know from having fun breaking CDs. :D
