GM is reportedly prepping a third Kappa-platform sports car under the Chevrolet Sting Ray name, according to the February 2006 issue of Motor Trend. Its target? The BMW Z4 and Porsche Cayman. “Like the Corvette, the Sting Ray would transcend GMs old divisional order,” the article explains. If it gets the green light, the Sting Ray will be a well-equipped, high-spec model, priced “far above” the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. which are also built on the Kappa architecture. The car is expected to come with a choice of engines, including a new V6, and possibly the same I4 engine featured in the new Pontiac Solstice GXP, announced this past Sunday.

Hmmm, interesting...

Makes me wonder what more the Kappa platform is capable of...

Chevrolet does need a small sports car, indeed... But I would rather see a Camaro than a Sting Ray...

Well its been proven you can fit a LS2 and LS7 into the Soltice so I guess the Kappa platform is capable of quite a bit.

I try to post all the news I can from the industry so no one is misinformed...I just have more sources to get GM news.

Since when was a Corvette Stingray not a Corvette?

Personally I don't like that concept drawing much, prefer to looks of the C6.

as far as I can see just in that picture, the only design cue NOT carried over from the old car is the flip headlights. I see alot of similarities, although much more modernized.

Looks like Chev has done a similar thing to Nissan.

"Since when was a Skyline GTR not a Skyline"

So it's going to be a seperate model now but simply share the Corvette badge then?

Seems that way,

I quite like that 1991 concept and the new concept drawing I kinda find OK. I probably wouldn't called it the Stingray though, I would kinda think that harmful to the Vette legacy.

I'm guessing it will look a lot like a Soltice and have an LS2 in it, which would be pretty sweet. As for the name I don't really see a problem with it.

The concept looks very Camaro-ish

The 91 concept you mean, yeah now you mention it the front is very reminisent of the Camaro, which I like as much as the Vette.
I think GM as bigger fish to fry concerning their situation, I don't think as much attention will go into this Sting Ray concept as normally would.

Am I the only person here who likes the concept drawing? Personally I think it would look amazing if the headlights weren't so bug-eyed.

I really hope this car is great, but as someone else said, GM should be focusing their attention elsewhere. Their bread and butter cars (passenger cars, minivans) need some attention, although they have made some great leaps forward with their passenger cars, they are light years behind with their minivans. Or should I say minivan. Why they sell the same vehicle under 5 different names is something I will never understand.

I agree the stingray has always been a corvette in my mind. I dont think the kappa chassis will be competing with the cayman at all. Maybe with the z4 as long as it has a big power advantage.

GM has never made good mini vans, I know I wouldn't buy one.

But GM's bread-and-butter cars are just fine, the Malibu, G6, soon to be Aura, car like that are and will do well. The V8 powered Impala/Monte Carlo was a pretty good move and I bet they are switched over to a RWD platform soon enough. GM's doing ok with their cars, they just have some internal issues to work out.

The drawing is hideous...and what the hell are they doing even thinking about reviving the Sting Ray and not using the Vette as the base...and since the C6 ZO6 has a 427 what the hell would GM be able to put in this one to make it "better" a freaking 15 liter V16? And that '91 concept is dead sexy--they need to build that and stuff this other concept.

I do like the concept, sure... But I dont like the name. The Stingray will always be a Corvette to me, no matter what. Maybe they should bring back the Corvair name?

Either way, this is much more important: The 2008 Chevrolet Camaro

I know the front end looks a little silly, but they say one of the two sides will be chosen by Chevrolet before the Detroit show that starts a little more than a week from now. I prefer the right side myself, but we will see what happens.

Motor Trend made it out that this will most likely have the 240hp V6, and NOT be a "Corvette Killer". It is just going to be a faster Solstice. Maybe GM isn't doing well with making the turbo Solstice and this would be a better option. I don't like it, really. Well, the car is okay, but it should NOT be called a Sting Ray. Not unless there is a V8 under the hood and it outperforms the C6. Give it another name and it should be alright.

I wouldn't put those Camaro pics up, GM has a s@#$ fit when they were leaked out.

*makes a note to save those pictures then*

So, personally, I figure if the Stingray name is going to linger in limbo, why not cash in on it and make a sporting, semi-affordable Chevy again?

You know if they are officially putting V-6's in there now, it probably wouldn't be long before a Stingray SS with at least a 5.3 DOD V-8 comes out.

Mmm, a Sports car with good mileage.

Price it at or below $30k, with 250+ Hp but ideally less weight than the Solstice, and it sounds like a Winnar is GM!

The last time thoes pics were posted they had to be removed sharpish, I'm guessing a mod will delete your post, but if you get a chance to, take them down. They've caused a lot of websites a lot of trouble.

As long as they don't put an I4 base model in. Dear god... why would they need three different cheapster RWDs on the same chassis with the same engine? On that account, why did they need two? It would be another classic case of GM competing against itself... and getting the shaft.

That said, I think it would be nice to have a "Stingray" on a smaller platform than the current 'Vette. The new Vettes are much bigger than the old Stingray, and I think a Kappa platform Stingray would capture the spirit of the original quite nicely.
