Good Idea to Press Charges?

Have you ever punched someone else in the face? If not, try it...you might like it. Aim for the button of his chin and you have a 90% chance of knocking them down. Once down, start wailing away...feet, fists, chairs...doesn't matter.

There are no rules in street fighting. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't been in one. The only "code" is to hurt the other guy to the point he submits or stops moving.

Bad advice, man, bad advice.

While I don't advocate violence (as much as possible) hitting someone in the face, especially the chin, is a fast way to broken knuckles. Unless one is boxing, but that's not what you're talking about, is it.

Also, it's not about the hit on the chin so much as the damage to the brain's systems through the shock to the skull that causes a knock out.

No, you're saying "a fight is a fight" in which case hitting a hard skull is pointless. Attack for the neck; it's soft and is of much more vital importance. Even a good, well placed kidney jab is better than ruining one's knuckles to give a fat lip or busted nose.

I've been punched in the head/ face countless times and been knocked out by it once. I lost a fight in 20 seconds after getting tacked to the ground and put in a lock, the only time it happened. I'm going with the odds on this one.

Again, having extensive experience in brawling* I can honestly say that an 'anything goes' policy in fighting isn't held by the majority. A guy goes down hard then there is no reason to continue bashing him once he's no threat any more. Like I say, numerous fights I've witnessed and been involved in generally last no more than a minute or two because somebody usually has the sense to realise when their opponent is defeated, before they leave them with brain damage and/ or paralysed.
It happened to the brother of a girl I used to see and he now drinks through a straw and is wheelchair bound, unable to do anything for himself because some idiots thought fighting was an 'anything goes' situation. It's only when fighting for your life that you can apply a no holds barred strategy, which is rarely in any bar or street fight.

Truth is fighting is not the answer to this solution. The opportunity for that has passed. Now it should fall into the hands of the authorities.

*Nothing I'm proud of, but life is what it is, you say yourself "different strokes for different folks...".

It's late enough into the situation where going back at the kid would for sure land you with assault charges. Revenge isn't a justification for attacking someone, as far as the law is concerned.
It's too late in the scenario and your ego is bruised; you pussed out and regret it. Just remember this for next time b/c if you bar hop when you're in college there's pretty much a 100% chance you'll get in some sort of confrontation. Unless you want to get beat up, humiliated, and let a lawyer do your dirty work. Different strokes for different folks...

I dunno. If I were with a girlfriend and she just had my head smashed into her's my first concern would be her safety, not getting the guy back. I mean, if there's a person posing an active threat to you that's one thing. But if someone's just an idiot there's not much point wasting your time on them if they're no longer a threat. All that does is damage your own hands because you're upset, and that's not going to make him suddenly stop being an idiot. Quite the opposite, probably.

And the way you talk about fighting makes me think you'd be one of those people wildly flailing at each other in a high school fight video. There's more to fighting then punching in the face.

I mean, I'd definitely go for pressing charges, like others have suggested. There's no telling how much would come of it, but whatever it is it's better than nothing.

^This. My first concern wasn't to punch him. I don't fight unless I'm in danger. That is my rule.

The kid nearly cried when he found out what happened. Turns out he's probably the nicest kid you know who just made a dumb choice. He's mortified and wants to apologize to both in person.

I've decided not to press charges. This is a kid who just made a stupid decision. The only injuries are a few bruises, and the kid feels horrible already, no need to make it worse. Pressing charges will do little to nothing but put an otherwise good kid in more trouble than he should be. He's learned a good lesson already, and that's really all that matters. Everyone is okay, no need to make the situation worse.

That is a fair decision. 👍

I hope you're right. How did you find out that he knows he made a dumb choice? So you do know who he is?

If he wants to apologize, let him. It's not easy to apologize and admit you made a mistake. This could even be a better lesson for this kid than a law suit.

If I was in that situation and there are no medical complications, an apology is more worth to me than pressing charges.

He came up to us personally and said it. He feels awful, and it is definitely better to have someone personally admit that what they did was dumb, and that they screwed up, rather than the possibility of getting some money off a teenage kid who did something stupid.

Update: So my girlfriend went back to the doctor. They misdiagnosed her at the beginning. Turns out she does have a concussion. She can't play video games, or go to band for a while, which sucks cause we have our concert on Monday. Glad they could find out though so that she can give her brain time to rest.

With friends like that, who needs enemies?! Instead of pressing charges, press your fist into his face a bunch of times really fast. Might help your headache go away.

That's a great way to land yourself in jail! Awesome advice [sarcasm]:grumpy:

The O.P got handled like a grown up..👍 Well done O.P:tup:👍

Sounds like there's no need to press charges, he admitted that he was in the wrong and is genuinely sorry. I'm sorry to hear about your girlfriend's concussion, though, hopefully it will heal well.

He smashed their heads together, I'm pretty sure that worse than throwing a punch since he not only hit the OP, but the OP's GF.

If the guy was my friend and did that to me, he'd be getting his knocks for being a douche.

If he did at the moment it happened, then maybe self defense. But you can't go back later and say "I owe you one" that won't work for adults mate.👍

The O.P did the right thing. Kicking the crap out of the other guy won't fix, or help pay his medical bills.

But sure, I can understand the strong urge to throw a few punches his way.:sly:
