Ive heard some guys use the paddles for downshifting at times as well.
Oh yes paddles for downshifts is a must, and is the fastest way. Its only on upshifts that the clutch helps.

So it doesn’t matter that the stick is in say 5th gear but you’ve downshifted to say 2nd gear to go around a corner? Or do you pop it to neutral before hand? I’ve been curious about this part.
It’s kind of confusing right, but I’ll try to explain it. You can take over with the paddles at any time, regardless of what gear the shifter is in. As a matter of fact, when I miss a shift, I upshift with the paddle instead as it’s faster than trying for the gear again.
Also, if you’ve been using the paddles, you can shift with the shifter without the clutch, kind of like a power shifter. But if you’ve used the clutch to shift your latest gear, if you move the shifter without the clutch, the car will get stuck in neutral.
Another thing I’ve discovered that’s very crucial!! - if you leave the shifter in a gear, then use the paddles, you can re-enter that gear with the clutch by itself. This really helps in Sport Mode races with a grid start.
-Leave shifter in 2nd
-Downshift to 1st with the paddle
-Launch
-When it’s time to grab 2nd gear, just kick the clutch as fast as you can, and you’ll enter 2nd gear without having to touch the shifter at all.
This makes the shift even faster, and you take off from everyone else like you have NOS.
Had to address this piece of malarkey here. It’s very well known that a shifter + clutch grants a huge advantage in Sport Mode races that feature a N class car, with a standard transmission. While it’s rare, it’s usually a 1sec+ per lap advantage over using the paddles — and has gotten me several top20 qualifying times and Sport wins.
Thanks for that very detailed reply! It's very helpful... I will switch ffb settings around and try the and reposition my hands on the wheel (I've been more 2 and 10 o'clock position) that Mazda setup sounds like a good one, throttle control with out TCS is my biggest issue ATM... Your right about the clutch, it's terrible. I'll stick to dirt rally and AC for the stick shifting experience.

10 & 2 gives you much less control, especially when it comes to correcting oversteer, as you can't turn the wheel as fast as you can with 9 & 3. When your hands are at direct opposite sides of the wheel, you can steer very fast & catch slides much better. Keeping your thumbs in the holes, relax your fingers so they're hardly touching the wheel, & that way you can turn a lot more quickly & easily.
What I wrote was not "malarkey" as you put it, the clutch model in GT Sport is poor, & many people get too many mis-shifts which are aggravating. Your strawman argument that you're faster in certain cars with it, I don't doubt that it's true. However, my argument had nothing to do with whether it was faster or not, just that it was poorly modeled.
The entire point of a racing game is to go faster though, so wonky clutch or not, it’s still faster to use a shifter in certain cars.
Again, I have never said that it wasn't faster. Merely repeating a red herring/strawman argument again only serves to make it twice as pointless.
Well then explain away man, your the one throwing out the strawman word, not me.
That link has absolutely nothing to do with a shifter, great rebuttal. 👍
Life's to short to engage in pointless arguments with people like you. Welcome to my ignore list, missing you already!
