Gran Turismo 4 Modding Discussion

After some discussion on the GT server we realised there were a few tracks in TT that had altered layouts from their GT4 versions, so I've ported the more subsantial ones across.

Currently they only use staggered starts with a sizeable gap, and the AI aren't particularly good at them because their paths are designed for bikes, but everything does work so they're at least worthy of inclusion in arcade.
Speaking of arcade inclusion, eagle-eyed viewers might have spotted me using the no-stripe '05 GT in arcade mode ;)

Lastly, a weird exclusion that made no sense - the 206 WRC was never in the list of cars that the AI can use in dirt races. Easy fix, and the Esso one is now in there too:

From what I recall, the tracks from TT don't have any pitlanes, so the AI breaks on those tracks when their tires/fuel run out.

I'm assuming that's still the case here?

It is as it would be an actual 3D model issue, which we can't edit yet.

It's another thing that's solved by not having them in events - the user can pick whether or not they use tire wear in arcade.

I apologize in advance if this question is already answered.😄 Can the Beginner Course from GT4 Prologue be ported to GT4? the No chicane version. Thanks 😄

Been keeping an eye on this thread and it’s safe to say you are doing a hell of a great job so far - keep it up!

I do have two quick questions and I’m sure more will follow later on as I get them:

1. Is there a way to make the Auto Union Audi appear in Arcade after it’s acquired because I know for PAL, the reason it doesn’t appear is unknown and somewhat confusing - perhaps being down to the fact it can be driven only on specific circuits.

2. Shouldn’t the Vauxhall Calibra Super Touring Car ‘94 appear as a Legendary Car in the Vauxhall dealership? For whatever reason on PAL say least, the Opel version appears as a Legendary Car but not the Vauxhall one - it’s always baffled me as to why.

I appreciate these questions are more specific to the PAL aversion and whether these apply to the NTSC version you are working on or not - hope these make sense.

Appreciate it, and questions are always welcome so no worries there. As it’s GT4 Online NTSC being used as a base I think these two are already non-issues. I can add the Auto Union back to the arcade selection but I’ll likely keep the usual restrictions on it, like the Model T where you can’t use it in actual races.

For the Vauxhall side of things, this build has Opel so shouldn’t be an issue. I’ve considered adding Vauxhall as an separate dealer so both exist, and I’m not 100% decided on whether or not I’ll do that, but if I do then I’ll make it consistent with Opel.
Is it possible to add Valencia and the other TT tracks to the GT Mode World Circuit menus?
Possible yes, I just haven’t quite figured out the technicalities yet.

No worries - it’s more of a thing I came across on the PAL version - tbh I don’t think both are needed as they are exactly the same cars but I suppose if you are including other region specific cars, might as well add the Vauxhalls too.

I’m surprised they didn’t make the exact same manufacturer event in the Vauxhall dealership as they did for Opel just to troll the player base at the time (perhaps they should have made a Vauxhall version but much easier compared to the ridiculously difficult Opel event).

With regards to the Auto Union, at the time of the game, it should have appeared on Arcade but act like the carriages/Model T with the same Arcade conditions.

One more thing actually - is there a way to have the SILEIGHTY ‘96 appear in Nissan rather than a None because it was added to Nissan from GT5 onwards? However based on how this mod works with certain things possible and others not, I’m not sure if this is possible but thought I’d mention it.

A general rule of thumb is that moving cars and data around is 100% possible, things like menu flow and adding certain features is sort of 50/50, and anything engine level like physics calculations or car cameras is a no.

Sileighty is a good shout, is it not a used car though? So in essence you're only changing where you go to tune it rather than where you get it from.

For GT Mode yes, it should be able to be tuned in Nissan but otherwise it can remain a used car as it appears there as well as a prize car I believe.

For Arcade yes also, it should appear in Nissan once acquired rather than going through “by Era” and selecting 1996.

Speaking of Vauxhall/Opel, one of the 2 Calibra has more power than the other, as well a slightly more RPMs. Dunno why the difference, but it's somewhat notable

Another suggestion although I suspect this will be impossible (or at least extremely unlikely to be possible) but here goes anyhow:

The Las Vegas Drag strip, is there a way to allow an opponent car on the other lane and have 1/4 mile drag races using a similar opponent car to the one you are in (opponent choice like that if the event synthesizer)?

I suspect this would be impossible but if it’s possible, could be a cool feature - I suppose it’s a drag race version of the event synthesizer in some way.

Decent idea but very unlikely, on top of needing to understand the track formats this would likely need additional in-race logic which there's no way to edit.

Do you plan on making cars sell for credits that normally wouldn't be able to? If I remember right, concept cars like the one pictured here couldn't be sold for anything at all.

If you are concerned about the size of GT4 Retail, there is a kit that can help reduce it to a single layer DVD5 game by downsampling the PSS files on the second layer. The tool to downsample the pss files is called pssdown.

If you need the kit let me know. I does not contain any copyrighted files either thankfully.
My copy I run from OPL is 3.28 GB's. It patches the ELF to load videos from a newly created file called GT4L1.VOL

Just stumbled across this thread after only recently getting back into the GT4 scene, I'm shocked about how far the modding scene has come with this game.
Excuse me if the question has been answered already, but what is the plan for this modding that you are doing? Is it something you plan to share once complete or at a certain stage? Or do you plan to share how you have done the mods?
I have played around with the GT2 Modding scene for a while up until a couple of years back but GT4 was always the one I was more interested in modding more.
Also will this mod be in anyway compatible with GT4 NTSCU version, or is it just purely for the online BETA?

Either way, keep up the great work mate!

I just need to say WOW! I’ve been keeping up with the thread a long ago, and man, what a year it has been for GT4 modding! I’m in love with those “new” menus you made, but i have some questions that you can might anwser:

1.PSP car models, do you think it can be a thing to convert/add to the game?

2. Do you think it is possible to add new dealerships such as Ferrari/Lamborghini (imagining you can add the PSP content)

3. Since it is possible to add new events, do you think it is possible to add a new section to GT Auto for color swapping?(I’m pretty sure this one is impossible, but oh well)

As per now these are my questions, looking forward to this masterpiece! Cheers mate :)

I'll keep that in mind, although my current plan is to just ship it as-is, I don't think anyone is hugely missing the animated track previews.

Thanks, and basically I do plan to release, but I'm a sucker for scope creep and finding a point to actually call it complete. I have considered maybe releasing some kind of early demo version, but I feel like that might give people a worse impression than just waiting for the full, finished thing.

For ease of modding it's purely based on the Online Beta copy, although if there's enough demand for it I can put out a separate patch (which will be fairly hefty) that will actually convert a standard NTSC copy to a modded Online Beta copy. It's not ideal but I think it's the best solution that isn't 1) telling people to download two builds, and 2) directly distributing an ISO for the version I'm using as a base.

Nenkai answered before I got to this, so basically see his responses for 1 and 2. For 3 I've had some ideas but each would have its downsides really. If it's possible I'd probably end up having a car colour picker like the one you see when you buy the car, you pay 5-10% of the car's original value, and then it deletes your existing one and replaces it with the new colour. It's technically a separate car but will more or less look like you're just respraying it.

Another thing I forgot to mention is the kit works on both NTSC-U and PAL regions. The tutorial that comes with the kit shows the PAL version being patched, but my NTSC-U copy works just fine though it took me a few tries to get it to actually boot (tested on pcsx2 before hardware). The key to getting it to work is to patch the ELF file after the new VOL file has been built, not before.

That reminds me, I need to re-dump the game and make an xdelta patch of the difference just in case my DVD5 iso ever were to get corrupted. I think over at TCRF they said said there are two version of GT4 NTSC-US with minor changes in the VOL file. Thankfully my copy is the original black-label, non-greatest hits version. Too bad ZSO compression can't get the DVD-9 version under 4 gigbytes to fit on a FAT32 drive.

OPL supports exFAT but most homebrew doesn't, while exFAT can also corrupt files easier from what I've read.

Valencia has been hacked in as a replacement before, but now it's time to do it properly:

Does this mean that it's going to be possible to add all the TT exclusive tracks and other potential layouts as seperate tracks with their own events and such? I have the mod that replaces some tracks with the TT tracks and it's such a janky mess sometimes.
