Hello forum

Some news for GTP users....

Gran Turismo 4 has managed at Number 41 out of 100 in the Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames which is out on July 3rd to buy in the UK. It managed to beat Burnout 2, Ridge Racer 2, GTR2, F-Zero GX and Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast, but was beaten by Project Gotham Racing 2 which appeared number 32 in the list.

The list was complied by Edge Viewers and computer industry experts to make the list of the Top 100 games. Not to be disappointed about GT, Gran Turismo is one of only five games by Edge Magazine to gain the maximum review mark, the others were Ocarina of Time, Half-Life 2, Super Mario 64 and Halo.

If you were wondering what got number 1....well it was Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 64.

You can read the list here: http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6231&Itemid=2
and mentions Gran Turismo 4 on page 6 out of 10 on the list. But to get full content and full review, you will need to buy Edge Presents: The 100 Best Videogames which is out on 3rd July.

Hmmm, interesting. I certainly wouldn't have put GT4 below PGR2 - not in a million, bazillion years. And the Top 10 is an absolute joke. Two Mario titles and two Zelda titles in the Top 6??, with FFVII at 18th and Ico above it at 13th?? There's no GTA: San Andreas or Forza Motorsport (not to mention FM2!) either

There's certainly allot with that list I don't agree with. The main one I don't agree with is putting PGR2 above GT4. Ack... I hated that game beyond measure. It drove me crazy. I hated the stupid kudos system and all those stupid challenges.:yuck:

Feature for feature I like San Andreas over Vice City, but timeline wise, music wise, and story wise I prefer Vice City over San Andreas. I didn't realise how much San Andreas' physics were improved until I popped Vice City back in.

The list is strange indeed. I don't think GT4 should be in, because GT1 made the difference in '98 and was a better game the time it was released, and was the revolution of the racing sims. The PGR2 entry is funny actually, and many more are questionable.

Well, it is very difficult to make a list like this, and any attempt is usually followed by long forum discussions that don't lead anywhere.

Cool. A list of games I've never heard of but all are better than Pong, Asteroids, Manic Miner, the original Test Drive, all of those Sierra adventure games from the '90s (the Quests and Leisure Suit Larry... ok maybe I'm stretching things with LSL), Elite, Wing Commander (any one of them), etc etc.

Funny thing about these kinds of lists. They always give me something to disagree with and never change my opinion about what the best is. Who needs 'em? :indiff:

Expected Resident Evil, Wipeout, Doom II to be much higher and also Tomb Raider considering how good they were in their time. No Max Payne, X-wing/Tie Fighter, Freespace 2 or even Command and Conquer either in the list, surely all top 100 if not top 50 games?

Who makes these lists?

Do companies have their hands in these?

I can't believe there's hardly any good classic games in there. And I mean CLASSICS, as in OLD, what gave games their foundations to get where they are today.
Also, like said above concerning GT1 over GT4, same goes for a lot of games that were groundbreaking in countless ways, and probably wouldn't be on that list even if it was the TOP 500 LIST...

..GOOD..FRICKIN'..CHRIST! When will they realize that they're frickin' Nintendo fanboys. OoT is NOT the best game ever. There is no best game ever. Sorry. But, EDGE, you are just one of the most lazy, and worst, magazines ever made. Read you're prompt.

I don't know how GT4 would make the list there is nothing revolutionary about the game in anyway as far as game play. Most of the physics are completely wrong, DP should be slapped for calling it a Sim, a Sim would allow you to make adjustments to left and right side independently not just front and back, there is no way to run on high-speed ovals properly the way they did it.

Nope, GT4 shouldn't even be on there. 👎

it was a ground breaking game, the biggest ground breaker ever
The first Zelda in 3D.u would say another thing if u played it allready because i dont think u have:yuck:

So many things wrong with this list. Crackdown, which is essentially a GTA clone, managed to make it on that list; while the far, far better Mafia is not. Pac Man Vs., which was essentially a mean spirited ploy to sell Game Boy Advances, is on that list, but neither the original Pac-Man nor Ms. Pac-Man are. Halo is in the top ten. Super Mario 64 is ahead of Super Mario World. Gunstar Heroes is not on that list. As much as I loathe Final Fantasy VII, XII has no right to be in front of it. Half Life is not on that list. Gran Turismo 4 is on that list, yet neither GT1 nor GT3 are. Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire are on that list, but the far superior Gold/Silver are not. Manhunt is on that list (probably the biggest piece of crap). Burnout 2 is on that list, but the better EA developed titles (well, Burnout 3 at least) are not. Phantasy Star Online is on that list, but the pioneering and incredible actual Phantasy Star titles are not. Super Mario Bros. 3 is not on that list. There is a Ridge Racer on that list that is not R4. THPS2 is on that list but the sheer perfection that was THPS3 is not. No Tetris Attack? Also, no Need For Speeds = comical. Out-Run 2006 is a great game for quick fun, but every 16-bit installment of the series (not to mention the original arcade versions of Outrun and OutRunners) wrecks it, and none of them belong on a "100 Best" list either.
To sum up? As the only games older than the PS1 are Nintendo or arcade games, I think it is safe to say that this is a list put together by the same morons who simply say games now are the best ever because they have never touched a controller without shoulder buttons. And NiGHTS? Please. I'm sure that only an eighth of the people who shower it with praises have actually played it. Good though it is, it made it on that list because people have heard that it is good rather than played it. That whole list is trash for the same reason stuff like G-Phoria is trash: games that sell well or are constantly voted as great by editors are voted as great by the voters regardless of if they were played or unknown gems buried beneath. As such, more niche genres containing some truly incredible games (Myst, for example) are glossed over. And I find it funny that there is a total of two strategy games (maybe another one that I might have missed) on that entire list. And as is always the cases with such lists, many times when in citing a specific game they blindly vote for the newest one under the assumption that it must be better (GT4, Ruby/Sapphire, Silent Hill 2). So, GT4 beat a bunch of games on a truly terrible and obviously biased list of 100 best games. Whoop de doo.

Dude, OoT is a masterpiece... I don't know if it is the best game ever, or if there is the best game ever, but we can't say it doesn't deserve the first place or a place in the top ten. :)
That I am fine with actually. But it just isn't that refined yet to be considered a masterpiece above anything else. That creates fanboyism, and fanboyism is basically cancer for the industry.

So, you said that there is no best game ever, and I think I have to agree, but anyway which game do you think could be first in this list? 💡

No Daggerfall (which introduced the concepts open-ended and open gameplay to videogames, not to mention that it *still* has by far the biggest gameworld of any game ever made, if you take into account travel time).

No Diablo (popularizing an entire genre, causing it to boom hugely in the Western world aswell as completely restructuring online play, pretty much paving the way for UO a little over a year later).

No Trackmania (the real arcade racing benchmark, revitalizing arcade racing and the Stunts fanbase - Outrun 2 was a belated and bad sequel to a better game, it shouldn't have been on that list).

Other mistakes: Civ 4 instead of Civ 1, HL2 instead of HL1, and other such mistakes.

The list alienates anyone trying to understand it. It mixes up it's purpose, having both games 'that had an impact' and games that are just good, and completely confusing anyone wanting to know what's good and what isn't.

Not a really reliable list if you ask me. Gran Turismo should be in the top 100, but not #4 and not at that place.

Possibly GT4, OoT (I have played it. Why don't you eat my shorts?), or Sonic 3 And Knuckles.

The point is, while Zelda is a masterpiece, many a game elsewhere is probably a masterpiece too. And one game shouldn't have to overshadow every other great game.

I just hat fanboyism, and Zelda: OoT, as well as FF7, has created astronomic levels of fanboyism.

Greetings Fellow Gamers,
I think overall the list is a fair representation of popularity. I don't know if Max Payne is available in the UK, but it would be in my top 10. Deus X certainly deserves to be ranked higher, and although I did enjoy Half Life 2, I would have place HL in the top 5. GTA Vice city is a favorite as well, and I'm disappointed at the original Silent Hill was not included.
But there as many opinions as there are games, we've come a long way since Pong!
Yours
Fangio

I was expecting Dino Crisis 1 & 2 to get in, aswell as GTA: San Andreas and all the other Gran Turismo games. At least this top 100 list didn't have the rule that other various 100 lists do that you can't a sequel to a game in.

Why on earth wasn't Halo 2 in there?

I cant believe noone said anything about RE4 as the #2 best game of all time? You got to be friggin kidding me. I just finished that game a few weeks ago and while its decent fun, I wouldnt even rank it in the top 100, let ALONE at number 2.

S3aK was originally going to be one game however. Thus it could be classified as one game.

StH3 was the first part, SaK was the 2nd.

How is GT2 not on the list? Also how is Burnout 2 on the list when Burnout 3 was WAY better? Gran Turismo 2 is still the best PS1 game IMO, would I be playing the game for almost a decade already if it wasn't good? :)

Who ever made this list needs to stop this proposterousity and replay these games again. Mario Kart Super Circuit is way better than the Mario Kart on the list.

Wow... they put the most successful online FPS game ever, and what invented online FPS... Not to mention the fact it took 78% of the online FPS players where playing it compared to all other PC shooters. Wile the most overrated game ever was placed before this. This whole list is screaming fan boyism all over it.

What they need to do with all the '100 greatest games' lists is to allow any game from a particular series in the list. this way all Gran Turismo games would probably get in, both Halo games, possibly every GTA game, and most of the Final Fantasy's and the Mario Karts, instead of one or two games in the series that don't deserve to be the best in that series.

1.I just don’t think they should have mixed the games like that. Compare a SimGame to an RPG? I think that they should have separate the game into classes.

2.Why doesn’t The SIMS, aren’t on the list? It is a great game, and it is better than SimCity…

3.Shenmue on 50th place? I think that they only measure the popularity of the games, because, Shenmue (for me and for everyone who played it), after the Legend of Zelda, it is one of the greatest game of all time, and very advance for a Dreamcast Game.
