Hi everyone,
before I start I just want people to know that I have been playing the Gran Turismo series since it came out. I have always enjoyed cars and racing and Gran Turismo did it for me back in the PS 1 days. After the introduction of the next gen systems (PS3-Xbox360) I firmly decided that I was going to get one. For 5 years I haven't played any Gran Turismo; up untill a couple weeks ago when I finally got a PS3 and GT5.
I have been following the series very closely and I just felt like I needed to share some opinions I have with the game. I just want to say that everyone is allowed to disagree with me, but I felt strong enough what I am about to type that to share with everyone. Anyways here goes:
1. My first impression of GT5 was not excellent nor was it poor, it was in the middle; very rare for me and the GT series. I don't know about you guys but I've waited like 5 years for this game and I can honestly say I wasn't too impressed at first.
2. The whole premium vs standard thing. I can whole heartly say that this was a lazy and half assed idea by PD. I can't believe that 800 cars are mainly PS2 port overs. The textures are awful, very very displeasing to the eye. In this modern age of computers and rendering, this is not acceptable. The other side of me says that seeing all these old GT cars in a new game brings a sense of nostalgia and desire; I tend to want standard care more than the premium ones half the time. But mainly I am disappointed in the idea and execution of standard cars.
3. Selection of premium cars. I don't understand what PD was thinking when deciding what cars would be premium or standard. I mean, let's face it guys, are well going to drive a Mazda Autozam? or a Toyota Vitz? I mean come on. I want to drive Corvettes, Skylines, Supras and race cars, not compact cars. What boggles my mind is they found it necessary to include 2 versions or more of the same exact car with little to no differences. Example: the Capaccino has 2 versions one a 91 the other a 95. What's the difference? I don't get it? Was it a lame way to boost up the 200 count? I could think of 200 other cars that I would of wanted rather than a Capaccino. Also was it necessary to include 5 different NASCAR Chevys?
3. Number of premium cars. I find it disapointing that a game that's been in production for 5 years can't even have an updated line up of cars. For example, why do we have a DB9 from 4 years ago? No V8 vantage? No DBS? No V12 Vantage? What's the deal? There are only 200 cars that have gotten special treatment and maybe only 100 or so are worth driving in my opinion. I feel as though PD used the whole "quantity over quality" where premium cars were kept down and standard cars were a last minute idea to fill in the car list.
4. Overall graphical impression. For a game that was in production this long, and where milions of dollars have been poured into it, why do majority of shadows, reflections look absolutely terrible? I don't quite understand why a game claiming 3D technology and HD resolution, and they can't get shadows right or car textures right. The tracks themselves don't have much to look at either; I realize they are just race tracks but some just look very bland and unappealing. I feel as though they didn't concentrate their efforts into making a very strong appealing game.
5. GT Life events. There are simply not enough. I remember GT4 having plenty of events and money to go around. I'm at level 19 right now and I barely have over 1 million dollars. I dislike that some "events" only have one race where you need to buy a decently expensive car, tune it decently and hope you win, then that car is useless. I also find the placement of certain events and requirements for too early on. Example the Supercar Nostalgia in Amateur Series. I also feel that you don't get rewarded well enough with money. Cars cost too much; example a Alfa Berra premium is 64,000$ What? How is a hot hatch Alfa more expensive here than in real life?
6. Prize Cars. Terrible rewards for hard work. I want to win a good useful car after I fight for a win in an event. Instead I am greeted with a standard car that has no appeal and looks like garbage. There should of been more thought put into this aspect. Especially for the liscences, the prize cars you get, most of them are useless for events.
Overall, I like GT5. I think they paied special attention to much great details and the premium cars look fantastic. The physiscs are unique and fun, unforgiving at times, but very realistic in my opinon. I love the feel of GT games, no one comes close to the experience of them. I am happy that the game is finally out and I am happy that I have a PS3. I am just unhappy with most of the game. I feel betrayed, I feel as though they didn't try hard enough. Might be too critical for me to say that but its how I feel. I was hoping that PD had more sense than to leave those standard cars direct ports or in selection of premium cars. I'm really trying to deal with GT5 still, but I'm having issues.
I hope I can get some good feedback from you guys
