Gran Turismo 5 Is Not Boring Or Easy As You May Have Thought Before...

Thanks to Polyphony Digital's continually effort of releasing updates to Gran Turismo 5 to ensure a much more refined experience, GT5 is a much better game than it was before when it was released. These updates brought a lot of fixes and new features. The updates have notably improved the A.I. of opponent drivers offline as they were previously described by IGN as "zombie A.I." I can now say that the A.I. is far more dynamic as they were before. With the latest update (v1.10), the game is actually fun and challenging and not boring or easy as to what many have thought long ago.

I was one of many who have said that GT5 is too easy and boring. Now I realize that I was just naive back then. In A-Spec, the events are unrestricted to tuning. I was the type of GT player who simply bought a car and uber-upgraded it, thus making A-Spec events too easy. I was easily plowing my way to the front with no competition. The A.I. at the time was in automation mode and was not fun to race with. This what made me think that GT5 was boring to play and way too easy but then realization hit me...

I bought several cars and left them how they were (basically stock cars) and tried out A-Spec once again. I was using the Ferrari 458 Italia, no tune upgrades whatsoever, no oil change and sports hard tires. I chose the La Festa Cavallino event (for A-Spec, not seasonal). I am now driving with all assists turned off (except traction control at 5 and ABS at 1) using manual and playing in the cockpit perspective. Back then I was driving on automatic with the default "beginner" assists turned on including the driving line and at the time my first 458 Italia was fully upgraded (had around 720HP). I was also the 'very' aggressive type of racer and no nothing about racing etiquette.

Now that I had GT5 since the day it came out, I can consider myself a professional GT player but it took more than 800+ hours (a fairly accurate estimate) of playing and learning as I play. I also learned about racing manners and rules from here at GTPlanet that made me a much better (and cleaner) racer! So back to the narrative above, GT5 plays differently now... It is actually fun and challenging to play now! My 458 Italia was evenly matched with the other Ferrari cars.

As said before, the A.I. plays more dynamic. I would see the A.I. cut corners time to time, drive side-to-side with another racer, go three-wide, make mistakes, would overtake more often and drive far more defensively. Heck, I'm pretty sure these A.I. drivers have personalities now. There was an Enzo Ferrari in this race that was noticeably aggressive as he would cut corners and ram other A.I. drivers. I also witnessed two Ferrari cars that were racing alongside for awhile side-to-side battling for position. When the Ferrari cars were about to enter a corner side-to-side, one Ferrari managed to take the inside line and forced the other Ferrari to go outside but that poor Ferrari hit the sands! As for my race results, I was able to get in the top 3 but getting to 1st place is such a huge battle! Heck, the entire race was hectic.

I ask you to do the same by driving a stock car with assists turned off and post your impressions/results and appreciation of the newly enhanced GT5 A.I. in an A-Spec event race.

tl;dr version (and perhaps conclusion): GT5 is more fun and challenging if you use a stock car (no tuning upgrades), turn off all assists using manual, use the cockpit camera view, possess extensive knowledge of racing etiquette and have great racing skills. This is how Gran Turismo 5 should have meant to be played and I'm enjoying it.

This is why I don't generally tune cars beyond intake, exhuast and tires. Most if the time I use a car that is equal to or slower than the competition. Most of the time you can make harder and more fun. I've alway said that if it is too easy than use a slower car.

Does anyone else think that PD are updating things because they weren't on the original game in the first place?

They probably planned seasonal events, but things like the helmets/racing suits must have been for the original game!?

Yes, In a way it's admitting that they didn't put enough content with the game.

Kaz already admitted that he wanted about 2 more years development on GT5. However due to pressure from the fans, the gaming community and SONY, they had to release it before the 2010 holiday season.

So all the extra content we are getting in patches is probably just the stuf they would have put in if they were given the extra 2 years development. For now, we just have to enjoy the GT5 we've got, take all the new updates as they come and hope for a truly extraordinary GT6 :)

Gran Turismo 5 is great. I have played it since Gran Turismo 1 and I think this is a great addition to this series.

Well said. 👍

If more people had realise that the game is as easy or as hard as one makes it then there would be no reason to get bored.

I got a bit bored with this game a few weeks ago. But like many others i did not desire that feeling so i resisted. I began to race cars which i have not touched before. Maybe because i have invested so much time in this game and still have some untested rides. At least the game does not own me anymore but i own it now. If it commands me to continue racing (instead of going to bed to make a fresh appearance at work the next day) i order it to be quiet.

I think it is time i tried Shift 2 Unleashed.

Enhanced AI? My ass is more enhanced than that.

I drove an undertuned 360 hp car against the 500hp stock cars from the AI and it still was easy enough considering my disadvantage, the AI never fought for its position, acelerated out of the corners veeeery slow, and so on.

Agreed. It get's quite irritating how the AI slows down when it detects you're going to pass. Sometimes I'll come up behind an AI and ride his bumper through a corner until I can safely pass, but when I start to accelerate out of the corner he putts along I end up rear-ending him and lose speed.

Ok, try it with one of the Honda's GT - stock, RH, ass off.

You mean like this?

Or like this?

Honda GT, Racing Hard, No assists, not stock, but undertuned to 370hp and 553 and 545pp respectively.

First off the AI would be MORE challenging and harder to beat if they were 'zombies'! Since the last update they are the opposite they know exactly where you are and PD have decided that the AI should stay as far away from you as possible! I've said it before - the AI just let you past! Go around the outside and they slow down to let you by, dive down the inside and they give you room, they even have trouble getting around you on a straight because they have to be so careful they don't bump you. It's pathetic!

+1 for both, I want the Ai to TRY to the max to get a good corner exit. It does the total opposite, especially if (as mentioned) the human player is close.

Ai programming is notoriously difficult though, it seems that in making the Ai less likely to just drive into the player it's TOO catious, altho it still seems to hit the side of me if I drive down the the inside, even if I'm well ahead at the point the Ai turns in. Pd need to increase the Ai's corner speed and corner exit. It seems as well that the corner entry is a bit smegged as well, the Ai seems to brake very late, suddenly turn in and scrub a LOT of speed off mid corner and then is slow on the gas for the exit.

I think it is time i tried Shift 2 Unleashed.

Still testing cars on Nürburgring Nordschleife ... Still refreshing the car list in the UCD. Still buying. I guess i`m still more hooked than i like to believe. Shift 2 Unleashed stays in its wrappings :)

One of the more amusing(and often annoying) results of the "parking" AI we have now i have noticed: If you go in to a corner too hot and go wide carrying too much speed - often because you're avoiding the AI under braking, they will see you as overtaking them along the outside and slow way down to wave you through. Which means that by the time you recover and get your wheels back under you and attempt to continue, there is a slow moving car still right in front of you that lost as much time as you did, and is now blocking your exit from the corner! Hilarity.

The game is definitely more fun with stock cars and cars set to be a class weaker than the AIs though. Unfortunately there are some cars and tracks that they just can't handle as well as the others. Watching them try to drive the DTM cars around the Nordschleife is just sidesplittingly funny.

OK, one more try. Laguna Seca..... stock power, RH. I've expirienced the same thing with a modified GT-R in the supercar festival with a SS tyres. No matter how much I underpower my car I was able to win.

But with a stock NSX GT on a Laguna Seca with a RH, no assis it's hard to me to catch the Xavani Nismo Z, although I don't have problems catching it with the rest of the Premium Super GT cars, but the NSX version.

I also found out that the oponents in the seasanal depends of the car you select, but some times with a better car you have slower opponents, but some times with a slower car you have superior opponents.

I mean with a stock GT-R in super car festival last track you are not able to win with a SS tyres, but with a fully tuned GT-R underpowered far away from the stock power of the GT-R you are able to win the race, which is a bit strange to me.

Recently bought NSX, just for the sake of the test, no suspension tuning, no downforce tuning, no aids, racing hard tires, no oil change, and no engine brake in.

NSXs are harder to drive fast, maybe that's why you are facing trouble with it. Also the stock tuning is horrible.

The AI is not a zombie... a zombie would eat your brain. What a terrible comparison by IGN, lol :D

That being said, game is still easy for the skilled. I thought about making a challenge mode out of A-spec, but why am I supposed to do that, I thought it was PD's job to make it competitive for anyone at every level, just like most other companies do with the 'difficulty' setting. It should be priority #1 for PD to include difficulty and better AI in GT6, no doubt.

The AI is challenging with their speed if you find the right balance with the options available.

For me these settings (arcade race - highest difficulty) give me some of the best racing I've experienced in a racing game on PS3.

- simulation steering
- manual gears/clutch
- disable stability, traction and abs
- track edge grip real
- use a tyre a step below the AI's choice

Their defensive capabilities, aggression and awareness definitely need working on in the next game/spec though.

You have to remember that most of us skilled GT players the game can be quite easy, but there are plenty of GT players who think this game is too hard. The players who think it's too hard won't post on this thread however. PD has to make this game playable for all.
