I know a bunch of people, young and old. Very few are into gaming. All know what gran turismo, and sim racing are. Many choose gt7 because of its online reputation.
But the initial purchase was motivated by the reputation of online racing not some nostalgia, nor car list. Certainly not track lists.
The “online reputation” is something that really only took off with GTSport. There’s nearly a 30 year span of GT games that many people may have picked up here or there throughout that time frame. You’re underestimating what that nostalgia and brand power have to do with why people buy this game.

If people want a game with cars on PS, they’re buying GT7 simply because they know the brand Gran Turismo from any one of those games in the past 30 years. To say their initial purchase was based on an online pedigree that the game really didn’t have until its last iteration is a little shortsighted. In fact I’d wager there was a massive amount of return players that may have skipped GTS because of its online racing focus.

While the car/track list may not be up to your expectations, likely not up to many peoples expectations, the game itself still checked the nostalgia box for many others, myself included quite honestly. I logged many hours in online racing in GTS, but GT7 is far closer to what I want out of a Gran Turismo game than GTS ever was

I had fun with every Gran Turismo from GT3 to Sport, but I have to admit that GT7 is very cleverly built so you can play it for a long time even when you don't like online racing - rotating legend cars, online time trial challenges, new content, all the scapes, ..

And at least in my country, it's the only Sony title which regularly appears in PS store's 'top 10 games' leaderboard.
