Gran Turismo Sport at Two: Still In Its Prime

And once next year comes, another decade starts.
Oh, wait a minute. Is it truly the start of a new decade? Some people would contemplate in believing that.

Keep banging those rocks together.

For racing, GT Sport has been a huge disappointment for me. I spent months and months working my way through previous GT's, but lack of a proper offline mode put paid to that pretty early on. It didn't help that my PS4 was bought for GT Sport. The token additions of offline races have been sporadic. And the lack of game without a network connection is unforgivable.

The DLC cars and tracks have been welcome, and great that PD have continued that, but their usefulness in the actual game is questionable bar the collecting aspect for the cars. Some cars don't even have an equivalent to even have a two car race. The tracks have been a bit hit and miss too. I think you can see how good a track is in how often it is used in the online races past the initial release. Not having all the PD made tracks from past games was, and continues to be, disappointing considering how many are still not in the game. :(

Watching the GT events (and GT Planet's ;)) and some YouTuber's (shout out to SuperGT and Tidgney :)) racing streams, and their videos, has been very enjoyable. The high quality of the racing has been great. GT Sport is also a beautiful game it has to be said. :)

Speaking of the online racing, of which I am a spectator, rather than a racer, some of the decisions PD have made with regard to the changing the BOP periodically, tire wear, and fuel in races usage has been to the detriment of the racing. Spending time burning fuel for qualifying is not good for the driver's, or the spectators. Having some cars that are virtually useless, seems to be a waste imho. Having some cars that are very hard to win with because of their drive trains also doesn't seem right too.

I've really enjoyed using the Livery Editor, and has been the thing that has kept me playing the game. It has quite a few areas that could be improved. ;) But it is nice to try and do something 'original', and sometimes copy a real life race car design. Being able to upload your own decals to personalise a design has been a very good idea. Losing decals because users delete them is not good though. If you save decals into your favourites, they should be saved so as not to be able to be deleted.

The photomode was always good, and GT Sport continues that.

Losing all my saved data wasn't nice, and a danger of having so much of the game relying on a network connection, and all your data on PD's/Sony's servers. Galling when I have 100's of Gb's free on my PS4.

Wow two years already. Yes the game have all sorts of short coming but in my book, PD never really deliver a perfect game in their lifetime. There's always weird choice or flawed design.

But I keep playing and enjoying it very much. The Daily Races are the gem for quick race with a full grid. Finding a lobby with the settings /cars you like with more than 3 people in it is just painful and time consumming.

I just miss Shuffle Race so much though.

Ok, time to show off...So in the last two years...

Out of DR.A only 52 days. 89% DR.A

GT Sport (at release) = The Phantom Menace

Don’t think GTS has reached Revenge of the Sith status. It’s stuck somewhere in Attack of the Clones quality.

This is a fair assessment. It's hard to catch that "lightning in a bottle" some games and other media acheives.

To me this article and PD are trying hard to maintain a positive atttitude.

We all know its hard to maintain momemtum two years down the track. Even with a huge revamp like a Spec 2.0 or how Forza 7 did a wholesale game mechanics change its still hard to keep interest in a two year old title.

I keep telling myself there's people here who are 'enthusiastic' about the franchise and decide each month whether its worth turning on the ps4 to get that update as some that feel that there's not enough there to stretch out until the next update.

They should be turning up the speed and quantity of content come 2yrs to try to even maintain interest at this point.

Honestly agreed, this year I can honestly say I'm not too impressed that most of the updates have offered 5 cars each at most. If they really want to hit that 400-500 car goal they'd have to add a handful more cars than just 5 every month.

Also the previous "GT being in the 'Star Wars prequel' period" comment made me chuckle a bit remembering the existence of Prequel memes. "Hello there! General Kazunori, you are a bold one..."

Will we have more updates by the end of 2020?
There is plenty content planned including road and race cars. Also expect an expanded 2020 FIA season. You can bank that as it comes from an impeccable source.

PD are also in negotiations with a much requested touring car series. Although given the nature of these things. No timeline on their arrival.

Which touring car series?

They should never have let Michelin mess with the physics. They've became abominable. Yes, this coming from a huge fan of this series...

Yeah the release of GT6 on old hardware wasn't the best decision for PD. GT Sport has got itself in a good place, and the lack of a new console has definitely helped in this regard.
I'm sure if GT6 and GTS would have been released both to PS4, GTS would be a ghost town only with hardcore racers.

I believe what happened in the background there is that PD had to come up with a new engine for the ps3 cell architecture and they felt that using that for ONLY GT5 was kind of a waste.

They knew that the GT5/6 engine would not straight port over the the ps4 architecture (x86/amd).

If you think about it, if GT6 could have been ps3/4 compatible wouldnt they have done it? At that point its free money on ps4.

They didnt because they couldnt.

In fact I believe PD was one of those who rallied against the CELL/CELL cpu gpu nonsense that Katuragi wanted (in the end the ps3 had some nvidia thing in it).

At this point, after two years, the only people still playing this game are the people who always play racing game. This is their type of game. Now why they choose GTS instead of other is the question. The fact that there is an update every month with new cars and track can only be helpfull.

Michelin is just a sticker at this point.

I love to see this. Hoping that my stats will starting looking like that in ~1500 races as well! Such a phenomenal game.

And granted, no game is ever perfect. PD have done a heck of a job with creating an accessible, enjoyable, and satisfying racing game though.

The Michelin physics update hasn't been released yet, so dunno what you mean by this.

At this stage, I'd rather TCR, but is there a link for more info on talks with Class 1?
It’s from a personal discussion related to the DTM vs SGT collaboration.

TCR is interesting but it’s largely a customer driven class with each car (of which there are many) needing an individual license. Then you have the complication of which class they’d be in.

Hopefully we get GT7 announcement within next 2 years for PS5

GT7 gotta be a full fat Gran Turismo like GT5 long live the king

Personally I don't think it would be that complicated, they seem like a decent fit into Gr.4 IMO.

I find myself at a crossroads with GTS:

When I was a B driver and unaware of my DR, the game was fun and carefree. There was a fair amount of messy racing but I dealt with it. But the frustrating thing about being a B driver is the moment your lap times start to improve, you're thrown in to a higher split which feels painfully unrewarding.

Earlier this year I decided to drop all driver aids and see how quick I can get. While I have progressed quite a bit, I feel like it's killed the fun in this game. The challenge was fun at first, but now it feels like the real practice simulator. And coming home from work just to practice for races isn't very fun.

I should also point out that this game has made me hate Suzuka. I don't understand the need to jam this track down our throats. Taking a hiatus from this weeks races and hoping for better ones next week.

Happy Anniversary GTS! I can echo the same sentiments. GT Sport was my return to the franchise after an absence since GT5. I’d played the previous versions like crazy. Fast forward some years, I’d been completely away from Gran Turismo so I’d not heard anything about GTS when I decided to download it in April of 2019(yep just a few months ago). Was browsing PSN that night when I came across it and thought, why not… As it turns out, it was an excellent decision.

Started playing again on controller and was immediately hooked! From there I discovered the YouTube videos, the Kaz documentary and the GTPlanet website. As you can see, I went about things completely backwards. Many hours of enjoyment, very passionate community and I took to the online portion a very profound way. So much so that I bought a GT Omega rig and a Fanatec CSL Elite set.

I’m thoroughly enjoying what this title has to offer, and I’m looking forward to the future of Gran Turismo!

If you don’t mind me asking, how do you find the GT Omega (Art?) rig with CSL Elite combination?
I currently have my CSL Elite w load cell on a NLR Wheel Stand, but have been eyeing the GT Omega Art for it.
I’m wondering how it is under heavy load cell braking, and also if the CSL can be slid back a bit on the pedal plate? I have long legs and the CSL didn’t work well with the NLR stand, without drilling.

I actually pieced mine together. I got the Classic Wheel Stand, then I picked up the Classic Rear Seat Frame and later the RS6 Seat. The wheel stand and rear seat frame bolt up perfectly and it’s very sturdy. The only thing that added flex was when I added the caster wheels to the rig. As convenient as it was to be able to roll it out of the way, I ended up removing those wheels. I then purchased the ART monitor stand for my 42” TV. The monitor stand being on wheels is extremely convenient. Although I don’t separate it from the rest of the rig, just being able to slightly shift it into place makes a big difference.

I don’t have the load cell for my csl elite pedals, but I do brake pretty heavily, and I can’t detect any flex under hard braking. I’m extremely happy with the whole setup. My pedals are slid all the way to the rear of the pedal plate. With my cockpit, because it’s two halves that are bolted together, it gives me a bit of adjustability when it comes to the length of the actual length of the rig as it relates to leg room.

Thank you for the info! That’s good to know the CSL Elites can slide to the rear of the pedal plate. I assume GT Omega would make their other products the same for CSL pedals. With my NRL wheel stand I had to buy an adapter once I upgraded to CSL, to attach the pedals. While it works, I lost the ability to move the pedals to the back of the pedal plate, and now my legs are uncomfortably cramped.
That is interesting that the castors added flex. I wonder if same would be for the Art rig. I was thinking of getting them, but I’ll have to do some more research there first it seems.
