Several things...
1. Hitting a wall just once? Why? Cant you drive withpout hitting anything? And if you did wouldnt you deserve to be out of the race? Wouldnt you start paying more attention to your technique and your lines instead of thinking oh, well, i'll just bounce off this wall here. Wouldnt you feel better knowing you finished the race without a scratch? And wouldnt it be a sight to see your primary competitor kiss the wall and go out of the race leaving you in the lead in the points?
2. Car manufacturers did not want car damage not because they did not want the people to see how fragile the cars were, but because they did not want them to see how fragile the cars were compared to the other manufacturers cars. Everyone knows a car will go to crap after a collision at 200mph, question is, which car will end up in a better condition. Plus you'd have these issues of why does car car repair bill double the other guys car, etc...
3. Backup lights? Minor detail which i dont care about. Whats much more cooler is how they made the HID lights stand out compared to normal lights - look at the RUF GRT and the Honda Accord side by side. Tinted windows that you can see through, sparks from bottoming out, detailed tire thread, heating brake-pads, wind noise at high speed, etc. - thats cool. Backup lights? - who cares, and who is backing up?
Opposite View:
Ever play a PC Game called Sports Car GT? They had the Nice BMWs, etc. ? That game had car damage - not parts flying off, but internal suspension, engine, aerodynamics damage that would affect your car. You could go as far as breaking a control arm or a bearing which would make your car severely pull to the side, etc. Why not incorporate that into Gran Tourismo? Not changing the oil? Trouble! Slammed a wall - the weel is bent slightly and the camber/toe is off - pulling to the side, Slammed it again? engine trouble - loss of power. Downshifted and skipped a gear - there goes your engine/transmission, etc...
Anyway, thats what i think. Please feel free to criticise
