GT Academy 2013 - "Casual Racer" times and tips

Thanks, yep that 5/5 bb was tricky of course. But braking actually wasn't the problem - it was corner exits, with the horrible understeer then snap oversteer when unwinding the wheel, that frustrated me to no end. And just the feeling of instability and lack of response to small inputs... wandering off the track when supposedly going straight... I'll quit before I bore everyone :yuck:.

A friend of mine was really funny in that he heard my feelings about it and at first was like "wow this is great, I don't know why you didn't get on with the car" but then like a day later said "the fun ended, now I hate it and never want to play again" LOL.

I'm not sure if I can help, but I usually reduce throttle when understeering, it helps. Not sure if steering sensitivity will affect wheel, but worth a shot, see if makes any difference with higher value : 2 or 3. If you have Tuned GTA 370Z in GT5, you can try the car with stock settings, max aero and SH tire, it drives similar to GTA 2013, minus the suspension work, which leads me to believe that the tire is still the same as in GT5 :(

Alright, you guys have gotten my curiousity up about ABS 0 with the Z. I'd driven maybe 20 seconds and after seing I couldn't adjust the B/B, had gone back to ABS 1. Maybe it was my imagination but it seemed like I could trail brake more effectively than in GT5.

Dug my seat, wheel and pedals out of storage from a recent move and was pretty happy I got into the 2:20.5xx range pretty quick (few hours) and was pretty consistent with that time. Loaded up some fast ghost (2:16.xxx) and quickly realized how in the crap will I ever be able to do that moments. It was enough motivation to do you some you-tubes searches and came across Tidgney's videos (sorry hadn't been on the forums in a good year and didn't know the name).

In all honesty I obviously don't check in these forums that much and realized I had no idea what trail braking was. Watching the video's did helped me I just cant seem to put it all together and be consistent. I am sitting at a 1:19:7xx and feel I could maybe shave a second if I put my best 3 sectors times together but that is still a ways off from the leaders.

Arena corner is where I picked up the most time learning to trail brake but I still struggle with luffield and copse the most. My first sector time I can pretty consistently get a 38.3 which I am pretty happy with but a low 1:39 is a rarity in the second time marker.

I only got to play a few nights and found myself getting frustrated at the end so hopefully after not being able to play the last few nights can cause me to relax on it a little. To be honest I didnt think I had a 1:19 in me until watching videos and now that I am in the 1:19 range I now feel I have some more left in me. I would love to break into that 1:18 time before its all over

I am finally getting a feel for this time trial. I could not get my car to rotate and slide like the fast guys can. I was hitting similar breaking points, but why would mine push past the apex and theirs would turn nicely in and down to the apex in a nice controlled slide? I thought that I was trail braking, like I would in the real race car, but the game doesn't quite react the same way.

Well, I wasn't trail braking to the game's satisfaction. It's interesting once you can get the car to do it. You have to plan room right at the end of the turn in to gradually release the brake pedal. If you jump off from it you'll continue to slide. If you roll out of the brakes as you are approaching the apex, the car will magically turn in at the last instant. In real life I would never carry the brake pedal that far down into the corner as I'd already be back on throttle at the points where the game likes that last bit of trail braking before the apex.

Shaved another second off my time tonight. Still not fast, but approaching 2:22 flat. As I get more use to the brake pedal release method, I think I can get into the mid 1:21s. That still isn't alien, but I am happy with how far I have come with learning the G27.

^That's a good description of cornering techniques. Nice to hear from someone who tracks in real life.

Wish I could describe it so well as that's the technique that started dropping some time for me. The "sliding" goes against my instinct but after accidently doing that in Sector 1, I pulled away from my 2:22.xxx ghost. Hmm. Next clean laps dropped me further down until I got a best of 2:19.9xx while implementing that late brake release. It's actually quite fun! Was able to run several low and flat 2:20's after that.

I get stuck using the same visual cues and muscle memory and barely improve past a certain point. Maybe I'll try again after not running for a week or so. But yeah, I'm OK with my times too. I've put in maybe 3 hours total in the final. Last year I ran a lot more at Motegi and ended up in the top 2000 in the US. This year I was within the top 300 last week, hoping to stay in the top 500 at closing.

Good stuff, NCRthree. Not bad for an oldie.
I was stuck on 2:22.1 for a week and was ready to give up on it. With the holidays started and with the kids around full-time I thought that would be it for me but I got the chance for a quick session and surprised myself with a 2:21.5 for a gain of about 500 places after about 5 laps. It was only when I finished I realised I had AS on strong. For some daft reason it remembers some of the settings but not others and I'd been messing about with aids in desperation on my previous attempt. It may have been a coincidence, but for any non-purist casual drivers out there it may be worth trying a few laps with AS.

Ran again last night for a bit and couldn't improve. Ran a 2:20.953 at the best part of the night but fumbled Club for what would have certainly been at least a 20.3xx... after that it was all down hill until I couldn't even keep up with my 21.560 ghost :(

I noticed too (not sure if anyone else has) but my left front tire last during one stint NEVER completely cooled down. I even slowed WAY down to a 2:60 and it was still a slight shade of yellow. Restarted on cold tires and had tons of grip again for a few laps until the same thing happened. Even still, the fact I am getting it so hot points to other issues.

Gonna give it a go again tonight. I'd really like to finish in the top 500 (US Region) if possible this year.

Even if not, everyone in here just think of how many thousands of people we are faster than. It's a happy thought at least 👍

That's great time without ABS FormulaKimball, I had 2:22.3xx with no ABS too after maybe 10 clean laps. Yeah, the car handled differently than with ABS, less stable and it comes to life - bites you back when you lose concentration. Brake more in straight line, slight brake pressure when trail braking due to the 5/5 BB. Some sections at later half with high speed curve, braking without ABS might be a bit hit and miss, but with more laps, it should be easier to tackle.

There are some parts of the track where braking without ABS, you will feel there's less grip than other parts of the road, not sure how to put it. I felt it at Copse and several corners after that. The suspension and tires independently loses traction when braking without ABS too aggressively, which cause the car at times pull to one side or understeer.

OK, I don't how you guys can drive with that B/B. I just barely touch the pedal and I've got instant instability. I swear that even if I think about touching the brake it starts to lock up, good grief! Gave it about 5 filthy laps but had to surrender to ABS. Hats off to you, Kimball and JohnnyP!

Went ahead and tried some more (with ABS1) but the layoff did me no favors. Had lost my bearings. Best were some low 2:21's. Tried cockpit cam like I normally drive but the contrast was too much for spotting marks. Even at 720 the flickering and high contrast gives me a headache. So this casual racer is done-no more fun left. At #416 in the States currently so I'm very happy with that.

After having a high point of 638 in the US I managed to improve "BACK TO" 749 last night.

I imagine I might be abe to get a few more tenths out but not sure I have much more. I also hear the ring calling my name so I don't know how much I want to run this anymore :scared:

Eh who am I kidding I'm sure I'll spend every moment I can get from now until either the end or I throw my wheel and rig through the TV screen :dunce:

Got a 2:24.112 today, which I am content with. I was only able to get silver before, and now I beat gold by .6 of a second, so yeah.
I think it's too hard on mistakes, ironic considering how many PD has made.

Ha! I agree with you to some extent on the "too hard on mistakes" because the are some things in there that just would never happen in real life. Several times now I've found a piece of curbing or something at track edge that almost flipped my car over. Some places understeer will scrub off speed like crazy and in others it makes no difference.

In other news I think I finally figured out this whole trailbraking/slide deal. It's basically to keep heat out of the front tires. Keep the fronts from going red... ever, and you'll go fast. That's basically it. Got it down to a 2:20.270 right now hoping to eek out another .3 tonight and then I'm done for this year.

Well that's all she wrote folks. I'm hanging it up for this year at 2:20.070

Good enough for 449th in the US which doubles my goal of top 1,000 and is only .071 from my goal of a 2:19.xxx, close enough.

Would've been in the 2:19 range if I hadn't blown the apex at the end of hangar. Lost a ton of time there. So bad it left skidmarks from the front tires :scared:

Anyway, really enjoyed it this year. Can't wait to get out on the track with a whole pack of GT3 cars ;)
