:: GT Academy Boot Camp Media Day - Silverstone ::

gtalogo.jpg

Today is media day at the Silverstone boot camp and all the finalists will be getting up bright eyed and bushy tailed for the day ahead. We've sent our very own GTP_Famine to Silverstone to meet all the finalists and organisers (Jardine International) and hopefully he'll be able to post back to GTP at some point if he can find a gap in tomorrows busy schedule.

I will update this post as the content comes in.

Feel free to discuss and post anything you find relating to media day at Silverstone.

Media Day - Report #1

GT Academy – Boot Camp (Media Day)
February 26th, 2010 by Famine

Well, as a last minute replacement and completely-baffled newbie amongst serious publications’ reporters (I count the Daily Star, Ireland Daily Star, Times, Mail, AutoWeek and the BBC, amongst others), I’m here at the GT Academy Boot Camp Media Day…

The day kicked off at Whittlebury Hall with a press conference for the 18 lucky (okay, skilled) drivers, with media in attendance, given by GT Academy judges Rob Barff, Johnny Herbert and Sabine Schmitz (yes, really). The concept of GT Academy, for those of us unaware of it – to take a driver from the virtual world and put him in a race car in the real world – was explained by Johnny before a short video from the 4th judge, none other than Eddie Irvine, and another short video from GT Academy winner Lucas Ordoñez.

The format was explained by Johnny – eviction-style boot camp fun, whittling the field down to just 3 drivers over 5 days, who would then receive 2 months of intensive training before the final prize is given – a seat in a Nissan 370Z GT4 class racer!

Rob explained the day’s activities before springing a surprise 10 minute written test on the drivers, after which the throng relocated to Silverstone.

At this point the GT Academy finalists were given a number of warm-up laps in a number of Nissan 370Zs on Silverstone’s Stowe Circuit, with an on-board instructor, before going for an individual “superpole lap” – the results of which are yet to be revealed… Then back to the Experience Centre for the ever-so-vital medical and fitness tests.

A brief break for lunch preceded the “media” being split into two groups and thrown into the same 370Zs the finalists drove – one guided lap, followed by a number of instructed laps – and then onto a head-to-head autocross course in Nissan’s R35 GT-Rs. As is typical, I was last to go and with no-one to go head-to-head with, who should step in but GT Academy champion Lucas Ordoñez! With a time of 37.93s on the final run, GTPlanet’s credentials were established as fastest publication (oh yes, you read that right).

As things stand at the moment, the drivers and the media (myself excepted – the excitement of the 370Z hurt my hand) are at Milton Keynes’s Daytona karting circuit for a spell of endurance karting. Coming later on this evening will be a driver press-conference, during which the drivers will be subjected to a barrage of questions to determine their presence under fire…

Watch this space for more news from the Boot Camp and hopefully some pictures, if the internet here permits!

Great work guys 👍 can't wait to read Famine's first report about our boys at Sliverstone  (no typo)

Snip:
Jardine International
Good atmosphere here. The guys all seem very relaxed, but I think they will soon change when it dawns on them how serious this is.

Info from John is that there are two stints at the track today, one this morning where they need to wear their race suits (have just seen on Twitter it is starting with a written exam) and one this afternoon where they are wearing more casual clothing, so perhaps this is a press conference or similar.

Doesn't look like they are doing any crazy fitness tests today (I guess a load of panting sweaty men doesn't make a good press story - lol).

Just got an update via text message - 370Z superpole and endurance kart race today.

Many thanks for the updates Claire, and thank you to John as well. Please pass on our hearty support

All the best

Apologies for the lateness of first report #1 - I've not had enough internets or time to write about what's going on, much less upload it.

It's now live on the News page and I'll update with a follow-up and hopefully a few MILLION images tomorrow morning - it's been an absolutely fledermaus-excrement crazy day thus far and it doesn't look like finishing before 11pm (and I'm 4 hours from home).

Oh, a little scoop I didn't put in the News article - apparently the US/Canada aren't represented at the GTABC for two reasons. First, it's PAL-only (simple, really). Second, there's talk of "something not too dissimilar" for that region alone in the near future and a possible worldwide one in the future.

Thanks for getting back to us, Famine. 👍

Great reading indeed. 👍

@Famine,
Mobile # = wrong

PM me please with the correct one.

Very nice setting the fastest time, Famine. The other reporters must have crapped their pants in the GT-R.

The next guy was 0.2s down and there were three or four others in the 39s. None had Lucas to try and match though :D

What an experience those guys must be having. im so jealous ! Checking the twitter updates is fantastic! Keep the news coming:tup:

A US/Worldwide GT Academy would be awesome. Although, I think I would prefer a US only GT academy... those guys from the Far East and Across the Pond are too fast for me.

Nice one Famine, are you going to be going back each day?

Sounds like you've had fun today, made up you got the fastest press time 👍

Makes for nice reading, Famine. Pretty gutted I couldn't have got down there - Alex was unable to wrangle me a media pass (would have been pretty nice, given that I'm doing a journalism degree). Even more gutted now I realise you got to drive a GT-R!

GTR would be wasted on the Stowe Circuit :D

Sounds great though.

Welcome PrudentClaire - wish the Brits the best of luck :)

GT Academy 2010 contestant Marco Calvo: "I hope I do better than Lucas but happy to equal him."

A little more modesty wouldn't do him any harm, me thinks... especially in view of:

late drama as Spain come close to being disqualified for constantly ignoring yellow flags
