I think people don't have a problem with a kart racer taking an award but the fact that this release is just a DLC pack in with battle mode and a few quality of life improvements. It's a very fun game but I don't think things like say Gran Turismo 5 XL or Project Cars Game of the Year Edition can be treated as new, eligible games.

Like I said in the article, I'm guessing the newfound portability of it on Switch must have swayed votes quite heavily.

I have no issue with a Mario Kart game winning this. In fact it's almost inevitable as it has the widest appeal which will naturally gain it a lot of extra votes. However, I don't think a port of a 3 year old game should be eligible.

I love my Wii U. Best Nintendo console since the SNES in my humble opinion. The Switch has a great library that will only get better, but I miss the second screen, the web browser that could bypass YouTube ads (by setting the user agent to an Android tablet), the superior Wii U eShop, and even Miiverse.

I have no complaint with MK8 Deluxe winning. It may not have seemed like the obvious choice for some, but maybe that's why it received the extra attention. It's in a league of its own. Sometimes things need to be turned on its head. I love this game. The only racing game that I've put more time into is Assetto Corsa. It's that fun.

MK8 is a great game no doubt about it. But I played it to death three years ago... three years ago. I don't feel Nintendos laziness should be celebrated like this. 3 years should've been enough to make a brand new Mario Kart for the Switch. As someone else said 3 year old ports should not be eligible.

How do you know there isn't another MK around the corner? You say it's lazy, but in other words, it was (relatively) easy. No way they had the entire team working on porting to the Switch.
