Hello, in real life, I have a 1996 3.4l V6 (don't laugh) Chevy Camaro. I only now have a permit, so of course I can't practice drifting (even parking lot or just power on oversteer) while mom or dad is in the car. I know cars with 160 hp can drift, as well as the fact that this has 200lb-ft of torque, I've seen it, but in GT5 it seems impossible. I have used cars with around 200hp and 200lb-ft in GT5, and even with comfort hards, the car will always bog down. Is there something I could be doing wrong, or is it just a problem with the game?

dont compare a game to real life.

ive drifted in real life and beleive me its way different then the game even when you have a wheel you dont feel the g-force and everything so don't compare it

I'm not talking about the experience as a whole, I know that's different. I'm talking about the ability of a very low powered car to drift through turns easily.

I they could have done better. I oen and have seen stock 155hp ka's drifted awesome and connect corners. I'm gt its almost nesr impossible to evem keep it sideways let alone connect corners.

Exactly. I see stock KA's and swap motor swapped SR's drifting awesomely. I have also seen videos of the 3.4 and 3.8 camaro with 160 and 200 horsepower drift decently, so I thought at least wth comfort hards it'd be possible.

My two favorite drift cars are my 185bhp Silvia S13 and my 325bhp Supra GT '88, both of which only have upgraded exhausts. The S13 is perfect for Tsukuba where a consistent steady drift is better than trying too hard on, say, a Murcielago (happened today). The Supra on the other hand is more than capable of holding long slides in 3rd and 4th, and surprises a lot of people when I tell how much power it has, or doesn't have :dopey:

And since it is my 1000th post, why not have a look at my Supra in action, against a maxed out noob in an RX8 :D

That Supra sounds great, and drifting was good too. The RX-8, not so much. On Tsukuba, can you drift the whole last turn easily with your Silvia, because most of the cars I've tried with less than 200hp bog down even in a low gear in this game. By the way, I saw she, you're a girl? Sorry, but it just makes me happy to see another girl that actually tries what she wants and doesn't stay ignorant towards anything but shoes and purses. Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine, you'd see a lot of it in the What grinds your gears? thread.

I am not the most accurate person when it comes to entries, but I can usually keep a decent angle in 3rd gear. I have a lot of problems with the more powerful cars catching me and knocking me off on that corner though...

And yus, I am a girl! :embarrassed: and thanks to my dad back in the days of Unreal Tournament and Half Life, I play games far too much :D I love drifring, even if I only ever use my rare Formula Chameleon Green Supra 3.0GT Turbo :dopey: it is just such a fantastic drift car, and actually looks good without any aero parts, and those chrome rims I love too

I really like that Supra, I have the premium model (with the inline-6 turbo) in black, I'm thinking about chrome wheels. The reason I can stand the few girls I like is because of knowledge of things like this, or at least interest instead of carelessness, that's really cool. If I ever see you online I'll get out the black Supra.

Hey, feel free to add me on PSN! I run my green Premium Supra all the time...and those chromes look good on black, I had them before I repainted it once I got hold of that Chameleon...I will admit though that I don't have much interest for professional drifting, I am pretty useless at competitive driving :dopey:

The whole reason I do drift is because I want to do something fun, not take it too seriously, so that's fine! I'll add you next time I'm on then. Oh yeah, and congrats on 1,000th post!

Sounds awesome :D me too, I only drift because getting my own drifts right in my silly little low-powered cars feels better than beating someone on some leaderboard in a dreadful car like the Cerbera Speed 12 :sly: and thanks! Makes me feel old...

Just wait until you're old and retired. And yes, drifting is about loving the car you use.

I'd always been wondering the same thing too, whycome low powered cars just don't seem to have the guts to spin the wheels in game =S

my 'low' powered FC's have 250-275 hp

IRL, that'd be HEAPS to me

and it drifts alright in game too, quick enough to hold off 400hp+ vehicles through corners,
yet . . . It accelerates like a prius on straights

I used to have a stock KA24 with a bum cylinder (70%compression) and even SHE could get lil sideways in the rain, and I HAVE to say: my grandparents prius would DEFINATELY beat it in a drag race.

Well as far as acceleration, time it, and you'll see the game isn't far off in that respect. It's just that you don't get the feeling of acceleration, and everything looks slower because you don't have things going past the side of you quickly, unless you're rich and have a 3-monitor setup. But really, I know cars are capable of spinning the wheels better than in the game. A burnout is impossible with anything under 250hp.

I used to own a 1986 corolla aka Trueno and am a fan of D1 and the reason you are seeing less Low HP cars in competition is they are hard to keep up with the Higher HP cars. Its not impossible, but you are going to have to seriously tune your car including the engine to get the most out of the 2nd and 3rd gears or mid range torque.

The only thing you can compare to reality drifting are the lines you take. Another cool thing I like is proper gearing for a course. Setting your final drive as you would in reality to suit the tracks you most frequent.

Also power is not everything, balance with a proper setup car is. I just got done competing in my first season of D1 Divisionals here in japan and learned a ton from the pro's. My R33 is solid but for tandem battles my turbo was not as good as I thought. Currently put 433chp the last time I dynoed with slipping clutch, there were cars that would pull away from me slowly while tandem drifting who had less power. Also the suspension geometry for a car the size of a R33 is just all wrong. I just switch back to S-chassis for the coming season!!!!

Personally I find Low HP cars on GT more fun to drift average for me is around 350hp.

My drift car is the S.Shigeno AE86, 217bhp, with a custom suspension and gearing set up, comfort mediums. I have no trouble drifting any corner in it, and Ive flown past 500bhp monsters.Think about the physics of drifting and you'll break traction, that's what your entry is all about. Then, once you're on the right line, keep it in the power band it wont bog down.
Edit: I use a G27 w/clutch.

I just started using a dfgt, and I've noticed it's easier to transfer weight and break traction with lower power. Problem is I only make it through a turn clean one out of ten tries, I just need to learn how to use this wheel effectively.

Lol a 3.4L as a first car? Have fun paying through the ass for the insurance :sly:

Oh wait, I guess you're not the one paying for it, lucky you have rich parents :dunce:

lol no, it will stay under my father's name until I'm out of high school. And a 3.4 isn't powerful in any way, so I don't see anything unusual.

It should be. You can get 1500hp out of a 3.2L. Unless its them big crappy American cars.

Well with a lot of work it could be possible, although it would need to be custom. There isn't much aftermarket for this engine. Even if there was, I like it stock. The only thing I MIGHT do is CAI for slight hp increase and awesome sound. Being that I need to pay for school and other things first, it probably won't happen. Anyway, I'd rather save for a Z32 300ZX or 1st gen S2K after college. Dreams...

power is nothing without a good setup, you see so many cars at local practice days here that have 300hp+ that just spin the wheels and go nowhere, its fun when you pull away from someone in a CA18DET powered 180sx that has 200hp on a good day, entries are where i really catch someone, they can just use there power to hold a drift while i really have to keep my speed up to get around the corner

in GT5 tho i mainly used the GS300 with like 600hp or the S13 with 300hp, depends on the track and what i feel like and who im drifting with

can check out some of my real drift videos here www.youtube.com/user/equoowe
