Just a note so that others out there don't get burned like i did... if you are playing GT4 on your PS3 DO NOT run the 2.0 system update as it will render your GT4 unplayable!!!! I checked the Sony site and others are having the same issue so i know it's not just me. No word there either as to when/if it will be fixed.

So much for backwards compatibility :grumpy::ouch:👎

My PS3 Model is an NTSC NA 80GB (acquired in Sep 2007).

I guess most people will have to wait until GT5 comes out before they can do the update.

You guys will just have to remember you will NOT be able to sign into the PSN Network at all unless you do the update. So it's whether you want to sacrifice not playing PS3 games online/ downloading content from the PSN store to be able to play GT4...

I have good news! I have done the 2.0 update & GT4 still works. I am on the 60gig PAL PS3.

Looks like the PAL 60 GB model still has hope... now I'm glad I decided to pay a bit more!

It seems that the NTSC system is affected by this issue, while the PAL one is not - don't quote me on this, but I don't see why the hard drive capacity should affect this, unless of course the different hard drives also have slightly different software with them.

Any technical reasons for this, or, better yet, other examples?

I will definitely update mine when I get home. 60Gb PAL FTW..

I haven't actually tried GT4 on the PS3 yet, but I'll see if it runs after the update and edit this post.

Might be good to see if it runs before the update too, in case the PS3 didn't like your copy of GT4 anyway. I can't think of a reason for this either, but you never know :)

Hey, mine's actually working better since the update. It still freezes once in awhile, but nowhere near what it used to. Hopefully it works like it used to when I played it on the ol' ps2... once the next update arrives. 💡

Excellent point - choosing not to update is a very high price to pay, if you ask me. I've already dug out my PS2 again and use that for PS2 games because I don't have a memory card reader :ouch:

Couldn't resist quoting...

I may be totally wrong on this, but isn't the NTSC 80GB model a "2nd generation" PS3 while the PAL 60GB model is a "1st generation" one? Somehow I've been under the impression that it has more in common with the "stripped out" 40GB model than the old 60GB one. The 40GB model has no PS2 support, so there might be some point in it.

I meant more "don't sue me if you can't play your game because of what I've said", but I knew you'd take my words anyway ;)

Hmm. Well, if that's true, it's quite possible that each of the hard drive versions are different, and that the hard drive capacity is the only way to tell which version of PS3 you have. It could still be totally unrelated, though, and we need more examples to be sure.

Crimson, I think I do know where you're living but I can't remember :embarrassed: so just for reference, what type of PS3 are you using?

There is no option to transfer your PS2 savegame to the PS3 ?....

Other than a memory card reader, I don't think so. If anybody has done it using a MaxDrive, I'd like to hear about it - it's silly buying a memory card reader because you're only going to really need it once (unless someone has one that they'd be willing to lend me 💡 )

I use my Mem Card reader all the time.

For instance... Create a GT4 gamesave for a LAN, store it on the PS3, transfer it to 12 PS2 memory cards in under 2 minutes. Backing up everyone else's memory cards at the same time...

Not everybody has a social life OK ? :grumpy:

Washington State, US. I gots me a 60gig NTSC ps3. :D It's a first gen, got it when it first came out. No nerds shooting at me, tho.

Memory card reader & ps2 controller adapter FTW.

Ok. This is confusing.

I just ordered a 40G PS3 because I figured: what the hell - I'll continue to play GT4 & EPR on my PS2, which is so small (slim) it's easily portable & worth keeping around to play PS2 games, so forget about 80G BC. (Also got 40G with R & C:TOD (+ Spiderman movie of course) included for $399, which I thought was more interesting than Motorstorm on the 80G).

If the 80G doesn't work with GT4 anyway, then I feel like I probably DID make the right decision?!?

GT4 works fine on my PS3.

awesome info, thanks, I def will not update now. Why is it that Sony's updates always mess up there software?
I can't tell if this post is FUD, a violation of rule #1 in GTP's AUP, or just yet another example of bad info that unsuspectingly gets spread over the internet via forums?

Sony has had a total of 18 System Software Updates that have continually improved software performance and features.

And as far as I know, this is the first time any update has caused a problem with a game... and in this case apparently only effecting PS3's without the Emotion Engine chip.

I also suspect Sony is already working on a fix for those that have been effected.

Is it possible to remove an update from the PS3?
That's a good question, although that would prevent you from playing online.

The fact that Sony makes available the User's Guides to all previous Systems suggests that it may be possible... or they do this just in the event someone couldn't or chooses not to update their system.

If you are really interested in seeing if that is possible, I suspect the best place to get your answer is through Sony PS3 Support.
