GT4 Photomode 2.0 Advanced Competition wk. 8

Owkay...
I'll say a bit about the motivation of my selection, in case people are interested.

Let it be known that they were all great. Personally, I think they are all worthy to compete with eachother.
But to anyone who wonders why a particular shot didn't get picked, even as a HM:
I understand, because those that didn't get picked are indeed great shots. But I'd like to know, what shot would you wanna have it replace? Suppose I did put those shots in the top 10 or HMs, which others had to go? Because if I did, then we'd have other shots that weren't picked at all, of which you could also say "why not even a HM?". You get my point?
So the selection had to be either random, or based on insignificant small things, that don't reflect the shots true value.
So I hope you understand my decision better now.

In general, I prefer true photograph quality (subject, composition, lighting) over how detailed, smoothed (unjagged) the shot is... But as I said, even the shots that don't perfectly match this personal preference of mine, I think are still poll worthy. But I HAD to make a cut, you know...

If you have questions on my opinion on particular shots, what small things made me decide not to pick them, stuff like that. Feel free to ask me. (PM, or this thread, if the mods don't mind).

Good?

doing a random cut kinda takes outa the competition part.. o well.. as i said in the other thread.. good job to whomever made it in :D

First let me say that there were plenty of great shots this week to begin, so melaneimoon had a tough job. I've been there and done that a few times! Props to everyone for their great job.

Now this method may not work for everyone, and some people just may not have the overall artistic and technical talents to critique and examine every picture for their pros and cons, but this is how I have always choosen the top 10 or top 20. And it may seem like a long process, but it really is'nt. It has worked for me in determining who makes the poll and who makes the HMs. So maybe you would like to give it a try if you are clueless on ways to choose the top 10 or 20.

The first thing I do is go through and save every final entry by the entrants name to my computer or flash drive or whatever.

I then go through and look at all of them through the slide show that comes standard with windows, and as I go through them I make a list with 4 categories: Like, Like/Maybe, Maybe, and Dislike. Now even though you may like a few shots, you really have to be confident with your likes, because you should not fill up your like colum very quickly. Only the very very best that are extremely eye catching and magnificant shots should make it into the Like category.

Once you have gone through all of the shots and found your likes, take them out of the list and go through the remaining shots to find your Like/Maybe's. Again, only put the very best from the remaining shots into this list. Now if you ever come across a dud or worthless, dead entry that you know has no possible chance of making it to the poll, just throw it in the Dislike category.

After you have your Like/Maybe category selected, continue on and categorize the remaining entries in the the maybe, dislike categories. And now that you have categorized all of the entries, you can begin to eliminate and filter out the shots that are not worthy of the poll. Since you really should only have a few shots in the Like category, the next step may be fairly simple. Put all of the Like/Maybe entries into the Like category. It may fill up the like category, but I have never filled it up with those two categories.

Than comes the difficult part. Open up the Maybe entries and go through them once more, picking out only the ones that really stand out to you. There are usually a few in this category that you should be able to pick. And if the number of maybe entries that you pick exceed the amount that the poll can take, go through those few shots again. And repeat this step until you have your top 10 or top 20. This way you are only comparing 2 or 3 shots instead of all of them.

This is my method. Categorize and elimate shots from the start and it may not be such an overwhelming experience. It also gives you the chance to see some of the questionable shots a few times. I would never suggest laying out all of the pictures at once so that you can see them all, because it makes it more difficult and other shots can be distracting and you can't see every single picture in it's entirity. (I know that's a word, but not sure how to spell it?) So for future poll selectors, give my method a try if you are stumped as to what to put in the poll.:)

Well I didn't do random ofcourse!

I more or less used Charger's method. I saved all the thumbs so that i can visually organise them into categories (believe me, I'm a category/method man, so much it gets unpractical, actually, hehe). But I also keep open a window with the PM with all the links, so that I can instantly see the full size photos, you know.

hey.. guys.. i'm not arguing.. IT WAS A MIS-UNDERSTANDING.. sheesh... i thought maybe melanei thought that the other orange stingray was from me as well.. thinking that was the final-final entry.. i'd like to try it once.. but i haven't taken any good photos.. so i will probably never get that far.. as i said.. a mis-understanding.. i dont take these comps personally.. so dont attack me for it.

No No No, no one is attacking anyone. Beleive me, just look at what I said last week! I have been there, done that, and had a big ole stink about the selection last week. You thought you had an entry that should of at least had an HM, just as I did last week. And I think possibly that your orange Stingray should have had an HM. As well as franz's Mustang, but it's all in who was picking. And now we can discuss our opinions, hopefully in peace!:)

Oh I didn't mean it attacking at all. I really just want clarity, you know.

But Charger, I'd really like to know: Suppose I'd make the Stingray and franz's Mustang HMs, which shots would you drop??

Sure. Looking at the poll and the photos up there, I probably would not have put the green Camaro in the poll or the HM's. It does not have any votes, and dispite the great background, the car does'nt really look that great, and the entire shot has an odd, monotone color to it and also looks kind of edgy. I would than move franz's shot into to the poll, completely bipassing the HMs. Then I may have swapped the Orange Corvette hitting the barriers with the black Cougar. Even though the Cougar has 5 votes, that just what I would have picked. (Either Or) Then I may have swapped the B/W Camaro with Suzq's Corvette, but that's kind of a questionable one, because Suzq's is a bit blurry. Was that the reason you did not pick it? But it was a nice angle. And I may have even left mine out for something else, but I would'nt be entering if I was picking so...

That's probably what I would have done. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your selections or your methods of choosing. And of course, people are gonna want to know why their shots did not get picked. I would suggest just strait up telling them why they did not get picked. Hopefully it's a good reason, and not because there was already another similar shot with the same car. (That was the reason mine did'nt get picked last week. Pretty disapointing excuse, but you understand my reasoning for being a little upset.):)

Sorry... I'm busy busy busy busy these days :ill:

But I definitely not let the random factor of similarity determine the selection.
Just the minor relative ups and downs in my very personal opinion. At least it's based on 'an' opinion on style/preference (be it my personal rather than the public's) and no coincidence.

Ok, I'm looking over all the entries again... They're all really so good, my selection really doesn't mean/say anything about the quality of the shots.
I mean... I'll tell the minor downs that made me not select them. But really... you know...

Ehm... I guess a few shots I didn't pick are "fairly" "simple" in composition. Like a wide angle close up with not really anything special besides that... Could be taken anywhere at anytime, regardless what the car is doing (driving straight, sliding, jumping, turning, braking,...) or what's going on in the background. I suppose that's one difficulty aspect less... That doesn't mean such shots can't be good, I mean, it's not a required aspect at all. I think those shots are great the way they are, and I wouldn't want to see them different.
> The vertical orange stingray, the burgundy cougar, purple super bee, rear mustang, side (red) camaro.
The burgundy cougar, I didn't quite get the circular blur... I'd rather see it different. I do like it, but I had to be over-stern.
Mousers camera was "too" close to the car. This means the car is either too close to the edges, or the wide angle deformation is too big... (* "too" being VERY relative, meaning I HAD to let something weigh down).
The black super bee and the rear mustang shot have a particular high image quality though. Perhaps I should have selected them instead of others... I guess there's just something less strong in the subject (what's going on in the shot), you know..., I know... :indiff:
And then there's achilles' shot, which I really liked too. If that had 2 cm more at the bottom, and 1 on the right (more space for the car), it would be in the top 10. hehe...
Then there's still the super bird and the green charger... eh... I don't know what to say...

I know it's all highly dubious bull****. :indiff:
And actually, I think if we simply have more than 10 equally great shots, we should simply have a bigger top... I think we should! It really was necessary this time...

I hope you ppl can understand what I (HAD to) did.
